A true data-driven, real-world breakdown of SitecoreAI vs Contentful from the implementation experts who build it.
Reviewed October 2026 · 184 criteria · 10 categories · View methodology →
Choose SitecoreAI if you run a large marketing organization with many brands or regions and want page building, personalization, testing and site search in one license. Choose Contentful if a developer-led team delivers structured content to websites, apps and AI agents and prefers a lighter build and a published entry price. The decision turns on whether you want those marketing tools bundled, or would rather assemble them around a cleaner, cheaper content API.
A high-level view of how the two platforms compare across key areas.
| Area | SitecoreAI | Contentful |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing suite | Page builder, personalization, A/B/n tests, forms and site search are all in the base license. | Personalization and Studio page building are enterprise add-ons, and forms, site search and marketing automation come from other vendors. |
| Multi-brand model | Site collections share components, page designs and datasources across brands, with per-site brand kits steering AI writing. | Each brand is a separate space, templates fork rather than inherit, and entries cannot be syndicated between spaces. |
| Pricing model | Quote only, metered on visits, storage, bandwidth and seats, on annual contracts with only a 14-day trial. | Free and Lite at $300 a month are published, Premium and Enterprise are quote only, and cancelling drops you to Free. |
| Build effort | Practitioners report 9 to 14 months to move from XP or XM, and certified Sitecore developers are scarce. | Integrators report 4 to 8 weeks for a single site, and generalist TypeScript and React developers are productive quickly. |
| Content APIs | GraphQL delivery through Experience Edge and 18 webhook events, but content webhooks are unsigned and never retry. | Separate delivery, preview, management and image APIs plus GraphQL, eight official SDKs and signed webhooks with an activity log. |
| AI model choice | Agentic Studio and a Marketer MCP server run mostly on Sitecore's own Azure OpenAI setup. | AI Actions run on the buyer's own model through OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex or Azure OpenAI. |
SitecoreAI publishes no prices. Each quote is built from modules, visits, sites and builder seats, signed as an annual commitment with no monthly billing or self-serve downgrade. Third-party estimates put all-in annual spend at $75K to $500K or more. On top come implementation, commonly $150K to $350K for a mid-market site, and the customer-hosted front end, often $25K to $100K a year.
Contentful publishes a non-commercial Free plan and Lite at $300 a month. SSO, custom roles and EU data residency need quote-only enterprise contracts, and so do personalization, Studio and AI Actions. Independent analysis puts the enterprise average near $179,000 a year, with real cost 40% to 60% above list. API calls do not accrue overages on Premium and Enterprise, and builds are much shorter.
Over five years Contentful usually costs less to license and build. Before comparing, add the separate personalization, search, forms and email tools that SitecoreAI bundles and Contentful buyers usually license elsewhere.
Both are vendor-run SaaS, and with both the customer builds and hosts the website. SitecoreAI authoring runs only as Sitecore-operated SaaS. The front end is usually a Next.js or Angular app, and since October 2026 Sitecore documents building one in any framework against its GraphQL APIs. Contentful runs fully managed on AWS with a small client SDK, but has no local emulator, so development always runs against the cloud.
Build effort differs sharply. SitecoreAI still means templates, renderings, datasources and SXA (Sitecore's site-building framework), which need scarce certified developers. A typical team adds a Sitecore architect and part-time DevOps for the base image. Contentful's concepts are few and generalist TypeScript developers are productive quickly. Its limits are real, though: content types cap at 50 fields, field-type changes need migration scripts, and preview and SEO need developer wiring.
Day to day, Contentful is lighter. Neither has upgrade projects, but SitecoreAI base images arrive every two weeks, some tagged action required for customized code, and Explorer and Package Designer were retired on short notice. Contentful also changes query behavior with about 30 days of notice, yet a single part-time developer usually covers platform operations.
This is where SitecoreAI earns its price. Page builder edits the live site with drag-and-drop components and previews by language, device, audience and future date. Design Studio now generates new components from a plain-language description. Personalization, A/B/n tests and multi-armed bandit allocation (traffic shifted automatically toward the winning variant) sit in the base license, and since October 2026 they reach mobile apps and third-party sites. Native forms, a campaign calendar and event-triggered emails round it out.
Contentful Personalization offers audience targeting, A/B and multivariate tests and bandit optimization inside the web app, and Studio provides visual page building. Both need enterprise plans, and new layouts need developer-registered components. There is no form builder, email sending or marketing automation, and sitemaps and redirects are built by the front-end team.
For multi-brand work, SitecoreAI site collections share component libraries, page designs and global datasources, with brand kits per site and Content Hub asset management bundled. Contentful runs each brand as a separate space with forked templates and no syndication of entries, so shared content gets duplicated or federated in custom code.
Both are among the stronger AI platforms we score, and they lean different ways. SitecoreAI's Agentic Studio has 20+ prebuilt agents, a no-code agent builder and multi-step flows, with review cards so a person approves every AI change. Its Marketer MCP server (Model Context Protocol, the standard AI assistants use to call tools) lets Claude, Copilot Studio or Cursor build pages and check references before deleting content. Brand kits ground AI writing per site, Sitecore holds ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management, and AI use is not billed per token.
Contentful is the more open choice. Its hosted MCP server reached general availability in July 2026 with OAuth and environment scoping. AI Actions can use the buyer's own model through OpenAI, AWS Bedrock (for Anthropic), Google Vertex or Azure OpenAI, and a custom endpoint also works. A Content Operations Agent is in public beta on all paid plans, and audit logs stream to your cloud storage within about five minutes.
SitecoreAI offers its own model only for Content Hub image tagging, so teams standardized on one AI provider will find Contentful easier to align. SitecoreAI's answer-engine tracking also needs a separate Scrunch subscription.
SitecoreAI and Contentful come from different vendors and different traditions. SitecoreAI is the SaaS successor to Sitecore XP and XM, while Contentful has been API-first from the start and has belonged to Salesforce since September 1, 2026. Moving between them is a full replatform in either direction.
Going from SitecoreAI to Contentful means remodeling Sitecore templates as content types within the 50-field limit and rebuilding the front end's components. Personalization, site search, forms and multi-site sharing must be replaced with Contentful add-ons or other vendors. SitecoreAI's front-end SDKs are open source, but its backend exit path is weak. Going the other way means rebuilding content as Sitecore templates and hiring a certified partner, with implementations commonly at $150K to $350K.
Existing Sitecore XP or XM customers face a front-end rebuild either way, but SitecoreAI keeps their content models, workflows and editor habits. Teams that never used Sitecore's personalization or multi-site features should price Contentful before renewing. Large multi-brand marketing groups should be wary of leaving SitecoreAI.

Yes. SitecoreAI is the new name for XM Cloud, Sitecore's SaaS digital experience platform, which now bundles the former CDP and Personalize products, site search and Agentic Studio in one license. It is not the self-hosted Sitecore XP or XM. Moving from those is a replatform with a front-end rebuild, which practitioners put at 9 to 14 months.
Salesforce completed the acquisition on September 1, 2026. October reports found no layoffs or leadership changes, with APIs, pricing and contracts unchanged, and standalone funding risk is gone. The open questions are overlap with Salesforce's own Experience Cloud CMS, the pending Braze deal, and a Marketing Cloud integration that is announced but not shipped. Raise them at renewal.
Contentful usually fits mid-size teams better. A team of two to three people can ship a marketing site, single-site builds take 4 to 8 weeks, and Lite costs $300 a month. SitecoreAI's quote-only annual contracts, partner-led builds and separate front-end hosting put its entry cost far higher, unless the team runs several brands and needs bundled personalization.
Both hold SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022 and offer a GDPR data processing agreement with EU data residency. SitecoreAI adds Asia-Pacific hosting, an in-country Singapore deployment and a 99.95% delivery uptime commitment. Contentful adds ISO 27018 and near real-time audit log streaming. Neither can be self-hosted, and SitecoreAI publishes no FedRAMP authorization or HIPAA business associate agreement template.
SitecoreAI scores higher on overall suite capability (73 vs 69). SitecoreAI wins 2 of the 10 scoring categories and Contentful wins 4, with 4 too close to call.
Contentful scores higher on total cost of ownership (64 vs 40), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.
SitecoreAI and Contentful are level on build simplicity (64 vs 64), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. Contentful scores higher on operational ease (62 vs 54), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.
SitecoreAI scores higher on fit for marketing sites (78 vs 52), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.
SitecoreAI and Contentful are level on AI enablement (78 vs 77), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
