A true data-driven, real-world breakdown of Optimizely SaaS CMS vs Contentful from the implementation experts who build it.
Reviewed October 2026 · 184 criteria · 10 categories · View methodology →
Both brands use a similar color, so Contentful is shown in a contrasting accent on this page.
Choose Optimizely SaaS CMS if marketers need to build pages themselves, run experiments and work with governed AI agents inside one vendor's suite. Choose Contentful if developers lead and content must feed websites, apps and AI agents through clean APIs in many languages. Contentful also has a published entry price, stronger audit logging and a bigger app marketplace. The choice depends on who owns the site day to day, and on whether you will license Optimizely's experimentation and personalization products.
A high-level view of how the two platforms compare across key areas.
| Area | Optimizely SaaS CMS | Contentful |
|---|---|---|
| Page building | Visual Builder gives marketers drag-and-drop pages, reusable blueprints and in-context editing on your own Next.js or Astro site. | Studio visual page building is a paid enterprise add-on, and new layouts need components registered by developers. |
| Developer model | Official SDKs cover only JavaScript and .NET, and the JavaScript SDK shipped three breaking major versions in 2026. | Eight official SDKs, including native mobile, sit on separate delivery, preview, management and image APIs with documented rate limits. |
| Search and hosting | Optimizely Graph search is included, and Optimizely can host your Next.js or Astro front end under the CMS service level agreement. | Built-in search is basic, so visitor search means Algolia or similar, and Vercel hosts the front end as a partner. |
| Marketing features | Forms are built in, while recommendations, analytics, email and journeys come from separately licensed Optimizely products. | There is no form builder, recommendation engine, commerce or marketing automation, so each comes from another vendor. |
| Audit and accessibility | The admin change log keeps one month, cannot be exported, and no accessibility conformance report is published. | Audit logs stream to S3, Azure or Google Cloud within about five minutes, and a WCAG 2.1 AA target is stated. |
| Pricing model | No published prices and no free CMS tier, with annual contracts that auto-renew on as little as 30 days' notice. | A non-commercial Free plan and Lite at $300 a month are public, then enterprise contracts are quote only. |
Optimizely SaaS CMS is quote only. Its plans page lists no prices and says every plan is individually packaged. Buyer reports put the median Optimizely contract near $78K a year, in a range of $31.5K to $199K. Quotes scale with traffic, sessions, API calls, product mix and AI credits. Buyer guides warn that the first quote often covers only 25 to 40 percent of the first year once services and overages are added. Hosting is bundled, which removes a separate cloud bill.
Contentful publishes a non-commercial Free plan and Lite at $300 a month. Premium and Enterprise are quote only, priced on spaces, seats, usage and add-ons. SSO, custom roles, SCIM user provisioning and EU data residency need an enterprise contract, and Personalization, Studio and AI Actions each require one. Independent analysis puts the enterprise average near $179,000 a year, about $900,000 over five years. API calls on Premium and Enterprise do not accrue overages.
Over several years, compare full stacks, not CMS line items. Optimizely's total grows with each sibling product you add. Contentful's grows with add-ons and the outside vendors you need for search, forms and hosting.
Both are fully managed headless platforms, so there are no servers, databases or CMS upgrades to run. Optimizely SaaS CMS delivers content through Optimizely Graph, its GraphQL layer, and can host a Next.js or Astro front end, though deployment uses zipped packages rather than a git pipeline. Contentful leaves the front end to you, with Vercel as its hosting partner.
Contentful is quicker to start. Developers can query content within an hour using official starters, and integrators report four to eight weeks for a single site and ten to sixteen for complex programs. Its limits are real: 50 fields per content type, migration scripts for field type changes and no local emulator. Optimizely SaaS CMS projects for marketing sites typically run three to six months, with a wider set of concepts to learn (experiences, compositions, blueprints, display templates) and instances provisioned through an onboarding manager.
Upkeep differs too. Optimizely's JavaScript SDK went through three breaking versions between February and September 2026, and an older REST API was retired under three months after its replacement. Ring deployments now let teams test releases on staging first. Contentful gives about six months' notice for endpoint removals but about 30 days for query changes. Generalist TypeScript developers work well on Contentful, while Optimizely work leans on platform specialists.
Optimizely SaaS CMS is the stronger tool for marketers who build pages. Visual Builder composes sections, rows and elements with reusable blueprints, and since September 2026 one experience can hold several layouts, such as a sidebar and a main area. Forms with multi-step layouts and conditional fields are built in. Experimentation is a strength of the suite: Feature Experimentation maps test variations to content variations and adds multivariate tests and bandit algorithms that shift traffic to winners. These, plus audiences, analytics and email, are separately licensed.
Contentful's marketer tools are add-ons. Studio provides visual page building and Personalization adds audience targeting and A/B tests, both on enterprise contracts. Contentful is ahead on release control: Launch publishes bundles of entries at once with a calendar view, and Timeline stages future versions with preview. Optimizely SaaS CMS schedules items one by one with no release bundles or calendar.
For assets, Optimizely's separately licensed DAM (digital asset management) adds expiry dates, renditions and usage tracking. Contentful relies on apps for Bynder, Cloudinary or Adobe's asset selector. For several brands, Optimizely runs many sites in one instance with shared content types, while Contentful puts each brand in its own space with no content syndication between them.
Both platforms are strong on AI, with different emphases. Optimizely SaaS CMS centers on Optimizely Agent Platform (formerly Opal): ready-made agents and Virtual Teammates that write, translate, audit and publish, including a WCAG Compliance Auditor and an SEO metadata agent. A no-code workflow builder adds approval gates, and CMS webhooks can start agents on content events. Admins get input guardrails, output evaluations and a dashboard of runs and credit spend. Model choice is between the Google and Anthropic families Optimizely provides.
Contentful is more open to your own tools. AI Actions run on your choice of OpenAI, Anthropic via AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex, Azure OpenAI or a custom endpoint, though AI Actions need an enterprise plan. Its hosted MCP server (Model Context Protocol, the standard way AI agents connect to tools) reached general availability in July 2026 with OAuth and environment scoping. An open-source local server offers 58 tools, and the Content Operations Agent entered public beta on paid plans in October 2026.
Optimizely also has a CMS MCP server, available since June 2026. Buyers who want governed agents out of the box lean Optimizely. Teams building their own agents and assistants lean Contentful, accepting thinner reporting on AI usage.
These are rival products from different vendors in the same generation: both are SaaS headless platforms, so a move changes the content model and front end, not the hosting philosophy. Moving to Contentful means rebuilding Visual Builder experiences and blueprints as developer-registered components or Studio pages. You also replace Graph search with a service like Algolia, move hosting to Vercel or similar, and rebuild forms. Teams that rely on Optimizely experimentation tied to content variations should think twice before leaving.
Moving to Optimizely SaaS CMS means rebuilding the front end on its JavaScript SDK or GraphQL, and accepting official SDKs for only JavaScript and .NET. Mobile apps on Contentful's Swift or Android SDKs need new clients. Release bundles and exportable audit logs are also lost. Contentful's 50-field cap and forked multi-brand templates often shaped content models that need rework anyway.
Existing Optimizely PaaS customers are a different case: the SaaS CMS is the vendor's managed successor, keeps a familiar content model and ends upgrade projects. Contentful customers weighing a move after the Salesforce acquisition should note that APIs, pricing and contracts were reported unchanged in October 2026.

Salesforce completed the acquisition on September 1, 2026. October reports found no layoffs or leadership changes tied to the close, and APIs, pricing and contracts unchanged. The open question is overlap: Salesforce also owns the Experience Cloud CMS and signed a deal for Braze on October 20, 2026, and Marketing Cloud integration is announced but not shipped. Ask about the roadmap at renewal.
No. The SaaS CMS is a fully managed headless product that removes version upgrades and infrastructure work while keeping a familiar content model. It runs no custom server-side code, so many marketplace add-ons built for the PaaS edition cannot be installed. Front ends are built in Next.js or Astro and read content through Optimizely Graph, which Optimizely can also host.
Optimizely SaaS CMS offers a HIPAA-enabled variant with a business associate agreement, plus ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018, SOC 2 Type 2 and EU hosting. Contentful holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and 27018 and streams audit logs to your security tools. Optimizely's change log keeps one month and cannot be exported, and it publishes no accessibility conformance report. Neither has FedRAMP authorization.
Contentful has a permanent Free plan for non-commercial use, capped at 10,000 records and two locales, and Lite at $300 a month with no credit card needed to sign up. Optimizely SaaS CMS has no free CMS tier. Development instances come through an onboarding manager, and demos or proofs of concept are offered to qualified buyers.
Contentful scores higher on overall suite capability (69 vs 67). Optimizely SaaS CMS wins 4 of the 10 scoring categories and Contentful wins 6.
Contentful scores higher on total cost of ownership (64 vs 45), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.
Contentful scores higher on build simplicity (64 vs 58), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. Optimizely SaaS CMS scores higher on operational ease (66 vs 62), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.
Optimizely SaaS CMS scores higher on fit for marketing sites (65 vs 52), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.
Optimizely SaaS CMS scores higher on AI enablement (79 vs 77), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
