A true data-driven, real-world breakdown of Liferay vs SitecoreAI from the implementation experts who build it.

Choose Liferay if your users log in: intranets, customer and partner portals, and B2B commerce, where its permissions, identity features and built-in commerce go well beyond SitecoreAI. Choose SitecoreAI if you run marketing sites for many brands or regions and want personalization, testing and AI agents in one SaaS license. Both are quote only and partner led. The choice depends on whether your audience is signed in or anonymous, and whether you must self-host.
A high-level view of how the two platforms compare across key areas.
| Area | Liferay | SitecoreAI |
|---|---|---|
| Logged-in experiences | Visitor registration, social login, SAML and OpenID Connect federation and account hierarchies ship in the product for portals. | There is no visitor login or registration layer, so gated content and identity federation are built in your own front end. |
| Intranet | Knowledge Base, wikis, message boards, announcements, a people directory and Microsoft 365 connectors are native. | Directories, read receipts, social features and onboarding journeys are missing, so every intranet feature is custom development. |
| Personalization and testing | Segment-based experiences and A/B tests depend on separately licensed Analytics Cloud or Liferay Data Platform, with no multivariate option. | Real-time audiences, component personalization, A/B/n tests and multi-armed bandit allocation come in the base license. |
| Delivery model | Liferay renders and hosts full sites on its SaaS or PaaS, or you self-host it with Java, a database and Elasticsearch. | Sitecore hosts the CMS only; you build and host a Next.js or Angular front end on Vercel, Netlify or your own servers. |
| Commerce | Native B2B commerce covers account pricing, quotes, checkout and Digital Sales Room deal microsites. | There is no cart, checkout or catalog, so commerce needs separately licensed OrderCloud or a third-party engine. |
| Developer model | Core customization needs Java and FreeMarker, with no typed TypeScript SDK or official Next.js starter. | Official SDKs cover Next.js, Angular and .NET, plus documented SDK-free paths with Astro and Go examples. |
Neither vendor publishes prices. Liferay quotes self-hosted subscriptions per server instance and environment, and its SaaS plans meter monthly active logged-in users and anonymous page views. AI Hub adds a third meter in prepaid Liferay Tokens. Unofficial reports put enterprise subscriptions at $25K to $50K a year. SitecoreAI meters visits, storage, bandwidth and builder seats, and third-party estimates put all-in annual spend at $75K to $500K or more. Both require annual or multi-year contracts with no monthly billing.
The license is only part of the bill. Liferay's larger costs are Java specialists, who command a 30 to 50 percent premium, a production team of three to five people, and upgrade work every year. Self-hosting adds roughly $500 to $2,000 a month of infrastructure. SitecoreAI removes servers and upgrades, but implementations commonly run $150K to $350K for mid-market sites, and front-end hosting often costs $25K to $100K a year. Liferay has a real free tier for evaluation, while SitecoreAI offers only a 14-day trial and a 60-day developer license. Over five years, expect SitecoreAI to cost more in license and hosting, and Liferay more in staff and upgrade effort.
Liferay is a Java platform you can run three ways: Liferay SaaS, Liferay PaaS, or self-hosted with a Java app server, database and Elasticsearch. It renders full sites itself, so the website comes with the platform. Skills are the hard part. Core customization needs Java and FreeMarker, teams must learn sites, fragments, Objects, client extensions and Spaces, and Liferay developers are scarce outside Latin America, Spain and India. Simple portals take four to eight weeks, and complex integration projects run nine to twelve months or more. Every quarterly release ships breaking changes, and the javax to Jakarta move is mandatory, so plan upgrade work each year.
SitecoreAI is SaaS only. Sitecore runs the CMS, patching, scaling and the Experience Edge delivery network, while your team builds and hosts the production site as a Next.js or Angular app. Authoring cannot be self-hosted. Official SDKs and starters make front-end work familiar to mainstream developers, but templates and SXA (Sitecore's site-building framework) still need certified Sitecore developers. The price of no upgrade projects is vendor-set deadlines: Explorer was retired after its date was pulled forward, and a September 2026 base image required teams with custom code to retest.
SitecoreAI is built for marketing teams. Page builder edits the live headless site with drag-and-drop components and previews by language, device, audience and future date. Since October 2026, Design Studio generates new components from a plain-language description. Real-time audiences, component personalization, A/B/n tests and multi-armed bandit allocation are in the base license, and they now reach apps and third-party sites. Site collections, shared component libraries and per-site brand kits let a central team govern many brands. Content Hub adds AI tagging and renditions for assets. Email and drip campaigns still need an outside provider.
Liferay's Page Editor is a capable visual builder for the sites Liferay renders, with inline editing and preview per segment and language. Personalization and A/B testing exist, but since 2026.Q1 segments come from separately licensed Analytics Cloud or Liferay Data Platform, and there is no multivariate testing. The Content Marketing Platform, generally available since September 2026, plans campaigns but does not automate them, and the core product has no Marketo or Mailchimp connectors. Video is embed only. Multi-site work holds up well with Virtual Instances, shared asset libraries and per-site workflows. Marketing-led teams will need a separate automation stack.
SitecoreAI goes further with agents. Agentic Studio offers more than 20 prebuilt agents, a no-code agent builder and multi-step flows, and a person approves every AI-proposed change through review cards. The official Marketer MCP server (Model Context Protocol, the standard AI assistants use to call tools) lets Claude, Copilot Studio or Cursor build pages and check references before deleting content. Brand kits steer AI writing and translation per site, and the Brand Review API scores content against brand rules. AI use is not billed per token. Model choice is narrow: beyond image tagging in Content Hub, AI runs on Sitecore's chosen provider.
Liferay's AI Hub, generally available in 2026.Q3, adds writing tasks, translation, image generation and agents built as standard Liferay workflows. Liferay also runs an official MCP server that acts with each signed-in user's permissions. Reusable instructions and Google Cloud Model Armor guardrails govern AI input and output, and both vendors hold ISO 42001 certification for AI management. AI Hub is metered in prepaid Liferay Tokens. Bring your own key works in AI Creator, but only for OpenAI. SEO metadata and content quality audits are still mostly manual.
These products come from different vendors with different architectures, so a move either way is a replatform, not an upgrade. Going from Liferay to SitecoreAI means remodelling content as Sitecore templates and items, rebuilding the front end as a Next.js or Angular app, and replacing portal logins, intranet tools and B2B commerce with custom work or other products. Content models, workflows and custom code are hard to move off Liferay. Organizations whose value sits in logged-in portals or an intranet should not make this move.
Going from SitecoreAI to Liferay means giving up bundled personalization and agents, or licensing Analytics Cloud, and hiring Java skills. The more common path to SitecoreAI is from Sitecore XP or XM: content models and editor habits carry over, but practitioners put that move at 9 to 14 months because the front end is rebuilt. Liferay customers facing the mandatory Jakarta move and the shift to the new CMS already have a migration ahead, which is a natural point to compare both. Either way, choose a partner with production experience on the target platform.

Yes. SitecoreAI is the new name for XM Cloud, Sitecore's SaaS platform, which now includes the former CDP and Personalize capabilities, site search and Agentic Studio. It is a different product from self-hosted Sitecore XP and XM. Moving from those to SitecoreAI is a replatform with a front-end rebuild that practitioners put at 9 to 14 months.
Liferay can. It runs on Liferay SaaS, Liferay PaaS or your own infrastructure with a Java app server, database and Elasticsearch, and its Cloud Native Experience toolkit covers AWS, GCP and Kubernetes. SitecoreAI cannot: authoring runs only as Sitecore-operated SaaS in EU, US or Asia-Pacific regions, though you host your own front end. Partner Dataweavers offers sovereign hosting in the customer's own Azure tenant.
Both hold SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001. Liferay adds a Business Associate Agreement for healthcare, a US government authorization path and self-hosting, which suits regulators who want data on your own servers. SitecoreAI offers contractual regional data residency and a 99.95% delivery uptime commitment, but has no FedRAMP authorization (the US federal cloud standard) or published HIPAA business associate agreement template.
Liferay, in most cases. Account hierarchies, permission-gated catalogs, account-specific pricing, quotes and checkout all ship in the platform, and Digital Sales Room adds governed deal microsites with buyer engagement tracking. SitecoreAI has no visitor login or native commerce, so the same portal needs OrderCloud or another commerce engine, an identity provider and custom front-end work.
Sitecore has the larger partner network, with a Diamond tier, annual partner awards and major systems integrators, though certified Sitecore developers are scarce in the US and Europe. Liferay runs a searchable partner directory with developer certification, but delivery partners are fewer and its talent pool is concentrated in Latin America, Spain and India. Budget for an implementation partner with either product.
SitecoreAI scores higher on overall suite capability (73 vs 62). Liferay wins 1 of the 10 scoring categories and SitecoreAI wins 7, with 2 too close to call.
Liferay scores higher on total cost of ownership (45 vs 40), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.
SitecoreAI scores higher on build simplicity (64 vs 45), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. SitecoreAI scores higher on operational ease (54 vs 43), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.
SitecoreAI scores higher on fit for marketing sites (78 vs 62), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.
SitecoreAI scores higher on AI enablement (78 vs 57), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
