A true data-driven, real-world breakdown of Kontent.ai vs Contentful from the implementation experts who build it.

Choose Contentful if you want the broader ecosystem, add-on personalization and testing, and AI that runs on your own model provider. Choose Kontent.ai if governance, compliance certifications, per-language workflows and low day to day upkeep matter more than marketplace breadth. Both are cloud-only headless CMSs with no commerce, forms or marketing automation, and both quote enterprise prices. The decision turns on whether you need native targeting and a large talent pool, or a procurement-ready compliance story and AI agents that maintain content.
A high-level view of how the two platforms compare across key areas.
| Area | Kontent.ai | Contentful |
|---|---|---|
| Personalization and testing | No native segments, personalization or A/B testing; targeting and experiments come from partners such as Uniform or Conscia. | Contentful Personalization, a paid add-on, adds audience rules, in-editor variant preview, A/B tests and connectors to Segment and Klaviyo. |
| Ecosystem | A curated directory of about 28 integrations, a small developer community and few job postings naming the platform. | A marketplace of well over 100 apps, large npm download volumes, Salesforce's partner network and regular job postings naming it. |
| AI model choice | AI features and Expert Agents run on a model Kontent.ai selects; no bring-your-own-key option was found. | AI Actions run on your own provider account, across OpenAI, the three hyperscaler clouds or a custom endpoint. |
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type 2, the ISO 27001 family, ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management and data residency in four regions. | SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001:2022 and ISO 27018, EU data residency, and audit logs streamed to your own cloud storage. |
| Vendor stability | Independent, with a 2022 Series C, about 133 staff and a record of additive, non-breaking updates. | Owned by Salesforce since September 1, 2026, which retires funding risk but adds overlap with Experience Cloud and Braze. |
| Content modeling limits | An official data-ops CLI diffs and syncs models, though renaming codenames on published types can break API filters. | Content types are capped at 50 fields, and changing a field type on live content needs a migration script. |
Neither vendor publishes an enterprise price. Kontent.ai's paid plans are quote-only from a slider calculator, and third-party listings range from a few hundred dollars to over $2,499 a month. Quotes scale on seats, content volume, languages and API calls under a Fair Use Policy that can throttle sustained overage. Contentful publishes two prices: a non-commercial Free plan and Lite at $300 a month. Premium and Enterprise are quote-only, priced on spaces, seats, usage and add-ons.
Feature gating shapes the real bill. Kontent.ai puts custom roles, environments, audit logs and SSO on its Scale and Enterprise plans. Contentful gates more: SSO, custom roles, SCIM user provisioning and EU data residency are enterprise items, and Personalization, Studio and AI Actions each need an enterprise plan. Independent analysis puts Contentful's real cost 40% to 60% above list, with an enterprise average near $179,000 a year.
Both are fully managed, so hosting and upgrades add little. Contentful buyers who want targeting pay for its add-on; Kontent.ai buyers pay a partner such as Uniform instead. Over five years, add-ons and seats move the total more than the core license.
Both are cloud-only SaaS with nothing to host but your front end. Kontent.ai runs on Microsoft Azure and Contentful runs on AWS. Neither offers self-hosting or a local emulator, so development always runs against the cloud. Kontent.ai offers a 99.99 percent Delivery API SLA on enterprise plans; Contentful's top support tiers promise a one-hour response for critical incidents.
Kontent.ai is quicker to wire up. A working integration needs two or three environment values, and its Next.js sample app configures preview, Web Spotlight (its in-context page editor) and draft mode automatically. Contentful needs about four values plus preview route handlers, per-content-type preview URLs and webhook wiring. In return, Contentful's pipeline tooling is stronger: its CLI diffs two environments and exports the difference as a runnable migration script.
Day to day, Kontent.ai ships additive changes and runs a subscribable breaking-changes feed. Contentful's API behavior changes often arrive with about 30 days of notice, and the Salesforce acquisition adds integration risk at renewal. Contentful is easier to staff, while Kontent.ai teams usually train generalist developers.
Editors on both platforms get live preview, fallback chains between languages and workflows per language. Kontent.ai leans toward governance: several custom workflows per content type, roles scoped by language and collection, and Web Spotlight for a page tree with in-context editing. Its editing interface meets WCAG 2.2 AA, the common accessibility standard. Contentful leans toward release control, with release bundles and Timeline, which stages several future versions of an entry.
The widest gap is targeting. Contentful Personalization, sold separately, adds audience rules, variant preview in the editor, A/B tests and multi-armed bandit tests that shift traffic toward the winning variant. A GA4 app shows page analytics beside each entry. Kontent.ai has none of this natively and relies on Uniform, Conscia or Optimizely, with no in-editor audience preview. Neither offers forms, email or marketing automation.
For several brands, Kontent.ai Spaces give each site its own domain and preview, and Collections share or isolate content. Contentful runs each brand as a separate space, and entries cannot be syndicated between spaces.
Both ship real AI for editors. Kontent.ai launched Expert Agents on March 31, 2026 for SEO, translation, compliance and content cleanup. They find missing fields, stale content and broken references, then apply bulk fixes inside existing roles and workflow steps. Contentful answers with AI Actions for generation and translation, Automations for no-code workflows, and a Content Operations Agent in public beta on paid plans.
Both offer an official MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, so assistants such as Claude or Cursor can read and write content. Contentful's hosted server reached general availability in July 2026 with OAuth and environment scoping. Contentful also runs AI Actions on your own model provider, while Kontent.ai's AI runs on a model it selects. Contentful adds AI-driven targeting through its Optimization Agent; Kontent.ai's personalization messaging means generating persona copy, not runtime targeting.
Governance is close. Kontent.ai holds ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management, and every agent action is logged, attributed and reversible, with human approval before anything publishes. Contentful offers an AI Actions consumption dashboard and a public Usage API.
These are two independent vendors, not editions of one product. Both are API-first headless CMSs with structured content, so a move either way is a content migration plus a rewrite of the front end's data layer. Kontent.ai's data-ops CLI backs up full environments, including models, workflows and roles, and its migration toolkit exports items and assets to JSON or CSV. Contentful publishes a data export procedure covering roughly two dozen content categories.
Moving to Contentful means remapping language variants to Contentful's locales, splitting any content type above 50 fields and rewiring preview. Moving to Kontent.ai means rebuilding personalization rules in a partner tool and replacing marketplace apps from a smaller directory. Workflows, roles and custom editor extensions are rebuilt either way.
Teams that depend on Contentful's native personalization or bring-your-own-model AI should not move to Kontent.ai. Regulated teams that rely on Kontent.ai's ISO/IEC 42001 certification or four-region data residency have little reason to switch.

Both hold SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 and offer EU data residency. Kontent.ai adds ISO/IEC 27017 and 42001, residency in the EU, US, Canada or Australia, and a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement for healthcare. Contentful's edge is audit events streamed to your own cloud storage in a format security monitoring tools can ingest.
Salesforce completed the acquisition on September 1, 2026. Reports since then show no Contentful layoffs, and APIs, pricing and contracts are unchanged. Funding risk is gone, but Salesforce also owns Experience Cloud CMS and signed to acquire Braze in October 2026, so buyers should ask about roadmap overlap and renewal terms.
Contentful. Job postings regularly name it, it runs certification programs and its npm packages see hundreds of thousands of weekly downloads. Kontent.ai postings are uncommon and its SDK repositories carry around 50 GitHub stars each, so teams usually train generalist JavaScript or .NET developers. Both use standard REST and GraphQL APIs, which keeps that training short.
Both have free plans that ban commercial use. Kontent.ai's Developer plan allows one user and two languages, and a 30-day trial is offered. Contentful's free Starter Space allows 10 users, 2 locales, 10,000 records and 100,000 API calls a month, without workflows. Contentful Lite at $300 a month is the cheapest published commercial price.
Contentful's 2026 Partner of the Year awards went to Deloitte Digital, DEPT, SAP and others, and since September 2026 it also sits inside Salesforce's integrator network. Kontent.ai has a smaller solution-partner directory with agency certifications, and its MACH Alliance membership connects it with agencies that specialize in composable, API-first builds.
Contentful scores higher on overall suite capability (69 vs 60). Kontent.ai wins 2 of the 10 scoring categories and Contentful wins 6, with 2 too close to call.
Kontent.ai and Contentful are level on total cost of ownership (66 vs 64), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.
Kontent.ai scores higher on build simplicity (68 vs 64), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. Kontent.ai scores higher on operational ease (70 vs 62), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.
Contentful scores higher on fit for marketing sites (52 vs 43), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.
Contentful scores higher on AI enablement (77 vs 63), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
