The short answer

Choose Adobe Experience Manager if you run many brand and country sites, need an enterprise asset manager and want Adobe to host the whole website. Choose Contentful if a JavaScript team is delivering structured content to web, apps and AI agents and wants to launch in weeks at a fraction of the cost. Both have strong compliance and AI tooling. The choice depends on whether you want a governed marketing suite or a lean content hub you assemble yourself.

Choose Adobe AEM if…

  • You govern many brand, country and language sites from one central team
  • You already license Adobe Target, Analytics or Real-Time CDP
  • Your brand needs rights management, adaptive video and 360-degree product views
  • You need FedRAMP Moderate, a HIPAA business associate agreement or EU sovereign hosting

Choose Contentful if…

  • Your developers work in JavaScript or TypeScript and want to launch in weeks
  • One content repository must feed websites, native mobile apps and AI agents
  • You want a published entry price and no CMS infrastructure to run
  • You pair a CMS with Shopify or commercetools in a composable stack

The differences that matter

AreaAdobe Experience ManagerContentful
Delivery modelRenders and hosts the whole site on an Adobe-managed Fastly CDN, with a 99.99% uptime option and Edge Delivery Services.Delivers content by API only, so your team builds and hosts the website, usually on Vercel.
Multi-brand sitesMulti Site Manager pushes content from a central blueprint to brand sites with inheritance and local overrides. Each brand is a separate space, and templates copy schemas but entries cannot be syndicated across spaces.
Digital assetsAEM Assets and Dynamic Media cover rights expiry, smart cropping, adaptive video and Firefly editing.A basic media library with an Images API, while rights, video and enterprise DAM come from Bynder, Cloudinary or Mux.
Marketing suiteForms, Target personalization, Journey Optimizer and Marketo connect natively, though each is a separate Adobe license. No forms, email or marketing automation, and personalization and the Studio page builder need a quote-only plan.
Developer modelTraditional builds need Java specialists in JCR, Sling, OSGi and HTL, with a heavy local SDK.Mainstream REST and GraphQL APIs, eight official SDKs and a fully typed JavaScript client.
Pricing modelQuote only, licensed by content requests counted even from cache, with partner estimates from about $30K a year.Lite costs $300 a month, higher plans are quote only, and their API calls do not accrue overages.

Pricing & total cost

Adobe Experience Manager is quote only. Partner guides put standalone Sites near $30K a year and Sites, Assets and Forms bundles at $60K to $200K or more. Sites is licensed by content requests, counted even when served from cache, and excess yearly usage must be bought. Target, Analytics, Commerce and the AI agents are separate licenses. Contentful publishes a non-commercial Free plan and Lite at $300 a month. Premium and Enterprise are quote only, priced on spaces, seats, usage and add-ons, and their API calls do not accrue overages. SSO, custom roles and EU data residency sit on enterprise contracts, as do personalization and Studio.

The bigger gap is everything around the license. First-year Adobe implementation typically costs two to four times the license, and AEM developers average $117K to $131K a year, so five-year cost usually reaches seven figures. Contentful builds take four to sixteen weeks with mainstream JavaScript developers and no CMS hosting bill, but front-end hosting and missing products are extra. Independent analysis puts Contentful's enterprise average near $179,000 a year, about $900,000 over five years, and each new brand adds a space.

What to ask Adobe AEM

  • How are content requests counted for our traffic, and what does overage cost?
  • Which of Target, Analytics, Forms and the AI agents are included in this quote?
  • Can the contract cap overages and let us reduce capacity at renewal?

What to ask Contentful

  • Which features we need, such as SSO, custom roles and EU data residency, require Enterprise?
  • How will each additional brand space and personalization profile be priced?
  • How will the Salesforce acquisition change our roadmap, support and renewal terms?

Implementation & hosting

Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service hosts authoring, publishing and the site itself, with Cloud Manager pipelines, staging environments and automatic updates. Traditional builds still carry OSGi configuration, Dispatcher caching rules and URL mapping, and the local SDK needs 4GB or more of memory. Full builds staff five or more specialized roles and basic deployments take six to twelve months. Edge Delivery Services is far simpler and lets two or three web developers run a site, but most enterprise builds take the traditional path. Adobe also sets the upgrade calendar: deprecated APIs were cut off in July 2026 and every Cloud Service environment moves to Java 25 by June 2027.

Contentful is fully managed SaaS on AWS, with no servers, patches or upgrades for the CMS. A team of two or three with TypeScript and React skills can ship a marketing site. Developers own the hard parts: content types cap at 50 fields, changing a field type on live content needs a migration script, and there is no local emulator. Preview, SEO fields and page layouts need developer wiring, and the front end is hosted elsewhere. API behavior changes often arrive with about 30 days of notice.

Marketing & personalization

Adobe Experience Manager gives marketers more out of the box. The Page Editor offers drag-and-drop layout inside locked templates, and Universal Editor adds click-to-edit preview on headless and Edge Delivery sites. Multi Site Manager, the Style System and template policies keep many brands consistent while local teams adapt content. AEM Assets and Dynamic Media handle rights, smart cropping and adaptive video. Personalization, testing, forms and journeys are strong, but they come from Target, AEM Forms and Journey Optimizer, each a separate license.

Contentful is strong on localization: field-level locales with fallbacks, per-locale workflows, release bundles and Timeline for staging future versions. Contentful Studio gives marketers a drag-and-drop canvas over your own React components, and Contentful Personalization handles audiences and A/B tests, but both need a quote-only plan. There are no forms, email, marketing automation or native SEO tools. Each brand is a separate space with no shared-content inheritance. Marketing teams wanting self-service will lean on developers and extra vendors.

AI capabilities

Both offer some of the deepest AI tooling among the platforms we score. Adobe Experience Manager has a single MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that lets assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT create pages, fragments and assets under the user's own permissions. Named agents for production, governance and content optimization went generally available in 2026 and are licensed separately. The Governance Agent checks tone, claims and imagery against brand policy, Firefly handles generative image editing, and Content Credentials mark AI provenance. Bring-your-own-model support is limited to Azure OpenAI for translation.

Contentful's hosted MCP server reached general availability in July 2026 with OAuth and environment scoping. AI Actions let you bring your own model through OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex or Azure OpenAI, and custom endpoints work too. That suits buyers with an existing AI contract. Audit logs separate AI actions from human edits. Open-source agent skills and a Content Operations Agent in public beta automate bulk work. Adobe leads on image generation and brand enforcement, while Contentful leads on model choice and openness.

Moving between them

These are different generations of product from different vendors. Adobe Experience Manager is a page-based suite with a headless option. Contentful is API-first, and Salesforce completed its acquisition on September 1, 2026. Moving from Adobe AEM to Contentful means getting content out of a proprietary repository with no standard export, which migration specialists put at four to eight months. Page templates must be rebuilt as structured content types plus a new front end. DAM metadata and smart crops do not transfer automatically, and Target or Analytics integrations need replacing.

Moving from Contentful to Adobe AEM is easier on the content side, because Contentful documents exports of entries, assets, workflows and roles through its API and CLI. The work is the Adobe build itself, with Java specialists and a six to twelve month timeline. Organizations relying on Multi Site Manager inheritance, Dynamic Media or Adobe Experience Cloud should not leave lightly. Teams on a lean budget should think hard before moving to Adobe.

Questions buyers ask

Can Adobe Experience Manager and Contentful be used together?

Yes. Contentful offers a first-party AEM Asset Selector app, released in August 2026, that lets editors browse and pick approved AEM Assets inside Contentful while respecting Adobe permissions. Some organizations keep Adobe's asset manager for brand governance and use Contentful as the headless content hub for their sites and apps.

Does Salesforce's acquisition of Contentful matter to buyers?

Salesforce completed the acquisition on September 1, 2026. Salesforce also owns its own Experience Cloud CMS and has signed a deal for Braze, and the Marketing Cloud integration is announced but not shipped. Buyers should ask about roadmap, support and pricing commitments before signing or renewing.

Which suits a regulated industry, Adobe Experience Manager or Contentful?

Both hold SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 27018 and offer GDPR terms. Adobe goes further with a HIPAA-ready configuration under a business associate agreement, FedRAMP Moderate and IRAP on Managed Services, and hosting on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. Contentful offers EU data residency on enterprise contracts and SIEM-ready audit log streaming.

Is Contentful or Adobe Experience Manager better for a mid-size team?

Contentful usually fits better. A team of two or three can ship a Contentful marketing site in four to eight weeks with mainstream JavaScript skills, and there is no CMS infrastructure to run. The catch is the jump from the $300 Lite plan to quote-only contracts. Adobe AEM's six to twelve month builds and specialist staffing rarely suit mid-size budgets.

Is AEM 6.5 the same as AEM as a Cloud Service?

Both are Adobe Experience Manager, but they differ in hosting and upgrades. Cloud Service is hosted by Adobe and patched automatically. Classic 6.5 and 6.5 LTS run on premises or on Managed Services, where support for classic 6.5 ended in August 2026. Self-managed customers must apply each security hotfix themselves.

Which is better, Adobe Experience Manager or Contentful?

Adobe Experience Manager scores higher on overall suite capability (76 vs 69). Adobe Experience Manager wins 3 of the 10 scoring categories and Contentful wins 4, with 3 too close to call.

Which costs less to own, Adobe Experience Manager or Contentful?

Contentful scores higher on total cost of ownership (64 vs 25), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.

Which is easier to implement and run, Adobe Experience Manager or Contentful?

Contentful scores higher on build simplicity (64 vs 25), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. Contentful scores higher on operational ease (62 vs 41), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.

Which is better for marketing teams, Adobe Experience Manager or Contentful?

Adobe Experience Manager scores higher on fit for marketing sites (80 vs 52), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.

Which has stronger AI features, Adobe Experience Manager or Contentful?

Adobe Experience Manager and Contentful are level on AI enablement (75 vs 77), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
