Best HCL Digital Experience Alternatives in 2026

HCL Digital Experience is what became of IBM WebSphere Portal, and it still behaves like it. The forced move to version 9.5 is over; the question is whether to keep paying rising renewals for a platform with almost no AI and a shrinking talent pool.

DXP Scorecard Analyst TeamReviewed Ratings updated 11 min read

The short answer

Contentstack and SitecoreAI are the strongest HCL Digital Experience alternatives in 2026. Contentstack gives regulated content teams 20-stage workflows, field-level permissions and governed AI agents with nothing to patch. SitecoreAI matches HCL DX's multi-site governance and compliance as a managed cloud with bundled personalization. Optimizely SaaS CMS suits marketing-led teams, Liferay is the natural portal successor, and Magnolia and Jahia keep the Java and self-hosting options with lighter operations.

Key takeaways

  • The acute pain has passed and the chronic pain has not. Versions 8.5 and 9.0 reached end of support on June 30, 2026, so the forced migration is done. What remains needs five to ten specialists, takes four to eight months to implement and raises renewals 6 percent a year.
  • AI is the gap you cannot close in place. HCL DX has no server for the Model Context Protocol, no AI agents, no semantic search and no generative authoring beyond summaries and one-click translation. Every platform here ships more, and most ship agents.
  • Keep what the portal does well. Authentication, portlet-level permissions and Virtual Portals are genuinely strong. Liferay and Salesforce Experience Cloud match them; the content platforms do not, so plan the intranet separately.
  • Compliance travels. ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS and a data processing agreement are table stakes across this list. What disappears on most of it is on-premises hosting, so decide first whether procurement truly requires it.
  • Count the people, not the license. Roughly ten HCL DX job postings exist globally and practitioners are largely WebSphere Portal veterans. Any platform here with a real developer pipeline lowers hiring risk more than any feature does.

Our picks at a glance

Our analysts’ take

HCL Digital Experience is a portal platform with real strengths for logged-in experiences. SAML, LDAP, Kerberos, OpenID Connect and multi-factor authentication are in the core product, permissions can be set per page, per portlet, per content item and per virtual portal, and Gartner recognized it in its 2025 Critical Capabilities for Authenticated Experiences. Virtual Portals run many brands on one installation, the editorial workflow supports joint approval and full audit trails, and the Full plan bundles a digital asset manager and HCL Leap forms. Regulated organizations that must self-host and run employee intranets on it have a reason to stay.

Everything else is expensive. Building on HCL DX means portlets, web content template hierarchies and WebSphere or Liberty administration, and production teams run five to ten or more specialists. Implementations take four to eight months and often exceed $500,000. HCL removed perpetual licenses, moved production to session metering with no published price for the Full tier, and documents automatic renewal increases of 6 percent on term licenses and 9 percent on support, effective August 18, 2026. There is no landing page builder, no A/B testing, no webhooks, no content delivery SDKs, and AI stops at summaries and keyword extraction.

This guide rates nine realistic destinations. Three are managed platforms that remove the application server, the cumulative fix cycle and the specialist staffing. One is the portal peer that kept pace with the market. Two are Java platforms that keep self-hosting with lighter operations. One is the portal platform for Salesforce estates, and two are enterprise platforms for compliance-heavy site fleets. The ratings lean on low upkeep and compliance, because HCL DX customers leave over operations but cannot give up their certifications, then on speed to launch and AI, where the platform has fallen furthest behind.

What to look for

  1. 1

    No application server to run

Count the hours your team spends on cumulative fixes, WebSphere or Liberty patching and JVM tuning. Managed SaaS platforms here remove all of it; the Java peers keep some.

  2. 2

Certifications you can hand to procurement

List what your security team signs off on today: ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS, FFIEC, TISAX, data residency, on-premises. Ask each vendor for the documents. On-premises hosting is where the list thins out.

  3. 3

    Logins and permissions that survive

Bring your real role matrix and your identity provider to each demo. Liferay and Salesforce Experience Cloud reach HCL DX's depth. The content platforms reach field-level permissions but have no portal in front of them.

  4. 4

    Pages marketers can build

Have a marketer build and publish a landing page in each trial. On HCL DX that is template work by a developer. Every platform here ships an editor marketers can run alone.

  5. 5

AI that does more than summarize

Ask to see an AI agent create a page, translate it and route it for approval, and whether the vendor's MCP server lets your own tools do the same. Most platforms here do both.

The shortlist, reviewed

#1Contentstack logo

Contentstack

Headless CMS
7.3/10
Fit score

The headless platform with governance closest to HCL DX's workflow depth and none of its operations. Permissions reach the field level, workflows run to 20 stages with forced two-reviewer approval, publish rules gate releases by branch, language and environment, and Agent OS runs AI agents with every action logged.

Best for
Regulated content teams with a front-end engineering group who want audited workflows, governed AI agents and nothing to patch.
Watch out for
Nothing for portals, intranets or commerce, cloud only, and protected health and payment card data are prohibited by contract.
What it costs
Free plan, Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month plus $25 per extra user; Enterprise quote-only. AI runs on metered credits.

#2Optimizely SaaS CMS logo

Optimizely SaaS CMS

Traditional DXP
6.6/10
Fit score

The fully managed suite for HCL DX customers whose public site has become a marketing program. Visual Builder edits pages and experiences, A/B and multivariate testing are native, Opal orchestrates AI agents, and the vendor handles every upgrade. ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2 and a HIPAA-enabled variant cover most regulated buyers.

Best for
Enterprise marketing teams that want experimentation and personalization in the editor and a platform nobody on staff has to operate.
Watch out for
Quote-only with median contracts near $78,000 a year and add-ons for experimentation and AI. No fit for intranets, and a February 2026 breach by voice phishing weighs on the record.
What it costs
Quote-only. Priced on traffic and feature tier, with experimentation and AI as add-ons on credits.

#3SitecoreAI logo

SitecoreAI

Traditional DXP
6.5/10
Fit score

The enterprise suite that matches Virtual Portals with Site Collections and adds what HCL DX lacks. Each brand is isolated with shared component libraries, the customer data platform and Personalize are bundled, and Agentic Studio ships 20 prebuilt agents under AI governance certified to ISO 42001, with SOC 2 behind it.

Best for
Large multi-brand enterprises in finance, healthcare and government that want governance, compliance and personalization in one managed cloud.
Watch out for
Quote-only with no free tier, thin intranet tooling, no native commerce, and a record of pulling retirement dates forward on roughly 20 days' notice.
What it costs
Quote-only. No published tiers. Customer data platform and Personalize are included in the base license; AI usage has a fair-use cap of 50,000 interactions a year.

#4Magnolia logo

Magnolia

Traditional DXP
5.8/10
Fit score

A Swiss Java platform for organizations that must choose where their data lives and want marketers editing visually. The Visual SPA Editor gives in-context editing on React, Angular or Next.js front ends, Live Copy inherits content across sites, and certifications cover SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and Spain's ENS High.

Best for
Regulated European and multi-country enterprises with a Java team that want single-tenant or self-hosted deployment on a far lighter stack than HCL DX.
Watch out for
A small developer community, a Java-centric stack beyond templates, no real-time co-editing, and native A/B testing switched off in August 2026 for a separately licensed module.
What it costs
Published starting prices: DX Cloud from $6,000 per month, DX Core self-hosted from $3,500 per month, plus a free open-source Community Edition.

#5Acquia logo

Acquia

Traditional DXP
5.6/10
Fit score

The enterprise Drupal platform for regulated organizations running many public sites. Acquia Cloud is FedRAMP Moderate authorized and holds HIPAA with a business associate agreement. Site Factory runs hundreds of sites from one codebase, and Drupal's granular permissions and 94-language stack come closest to HCL DX among content platforms.

Best for
Government, healthcare and higher-education organizations that need compliance paperwork and site fleets more than an employee portal.
Watch out for
Quote-only enterprise tiers, production work that needs Drupal specialists, and vendor-set deadlines including Drupal 10 end of support on December 9, 2026.
What it costs
Quote-only for the enterprise platform; tier names are public, dollar figures are not.

#6Jahia logo

Jahia

Traditional DXP
5.6/10
Fit score

The Java platform with the lightest cloud operations and the deepest sovereignty story. Jahia Cloud upgrades are automated with blue-green deployment, a sovereign option runs on OVH in France, permissions reach individual fields, and field-level translation covers more than 100 languages. Bring-your-own-key AI and a native MCP server leave HCL DX far behind.

Best for
European enterprises and public bodies with multilingual, multi-site estates and GDPR or sovereignty mandates who want to stay on Java with a managed cloud.
Watch out for
Non-cancelable annual contracts with seven metered consumption dimensions, no accessibility conformance report, no SOC 2 report, and a very small community.
What it costs
Quote-only. CMS Enterprise and DXP Enterprise plans are published as a feature matrix with no dollar figures; Cloud contracts meter API calls, page views, profiles, storage and bandwidth.

#7Salesforce Experience Cloud logo

Salesforce Experience Cloud

Traditional DXP
5.6/10
Fit score

The portal platform for organizations on Salesforce CRM. Customers, partners and employees see live CRM records under the Salesforce sharing model, Agentforce puts governed AI agents in front of them, and the Summer 2026 release added HR and IT agent libraries. FedRAMP High and HIPAA cover the strictest buyers, with nothing to host.

Best for
Regulated organizations running Salesforce CRM whose HCL DX estate is a customer, partner or employee service portal rather than a content site.
Watch out for
Internal seats from $195 per user per month plus unpublished per-login external licenses and an 8 to 10 percent renewal uplift. The content model is flat, there is no A/B testing, and every layout needs a Lightning Web Component developer.
What it costs
Quote-only for external-user licenses. Internal seats start at $195 per user per month on the Core edition; secondhand figures put external users at $2 to $35 per login or member per month.

#8Adobe Experience Manager logo

Adobe Experience Manager

Traditional DXP
5.4/10
Fit score

The broadest platform we rate, for HCL DX customers moving into the Adobe stack. Multi Site Manager governs hundreds of sites from a blueprint, AEM Assets is the strongest digital asset manager in the market, and the compliance portfolio includes a HIPAA business associate agreement and FedRAMP.

Best for
Large enterprises standardized on Adobe Experience Cloud with multi-brand estates and heavy asset libraries.
Watch out for
Quote-only pricing metered on content requests, a proprietary Java stack as demanding as HCL DX's, thin intranet features, and 111 vulnerabilities published in September 2026 alone.
What it costs

#9Liferay logo

Liferay

Traditional DXP

The portal peer that modernized. Permissions reach the field level and inherit through an organization hierarchy, SAML and SCIM are built in, and intranet features run from role-based dashboards to Microsoft 365 and SAP connectors. AI Hub is generally available with an MCP server, and a $0 Free Tier arrived in 2026.

Best for
Organizations that need an employee intranet or B2B portal with HCL DX's depth of access control and want a vendor still investing in the category.
Watch out for
Still a Java platform with many concepts, a 3 to 5 person team and a Jakarta migration described as re-platforming. Pricing is quote-only, with no co-editing or native email.
What it costs
Quote-only for every enterprise, SaaS and PaaS plan; a $0 Free Tier arrived with the 2026.Q1 release. SaaS plans meter monthly active logged-in users and anonymous page views.

What you are really replacing when you leave HCL DX

HCL DX estates are usually a public website and an intranet on one portal stack, with Leap forms and a digital asset manager bundled in. The shortlists barely overlap, so name the piece first.

The employee intranet

Role-based pages, knowledge management and permission-aware search. Liferay matches it most closely and Salesforce Experience Cloud serves employee service portals. The content platforms here do not do intranets.

The public site

Corporate pages, brand microsites and campaign content. This is where HCL DX is slowest, with every layout a developer's template job. Contentstack, SitecoreAI and Optimizely SaaS CMS remove the operations; Magnolia and Jahia keep the Java option with far less of it.

Forms and assets

Leap forms and the bundled digital asset manager disappear with the license. SitecoreAI, Adobe Experience Manager and Contentstack bring asset management; forms come from the suite or a specialist tool.

Questions to settle before you commit

Does procurement truly require on-premises?

If yes, the list is Liferay, Magnolia and Jahia. If a certified cloud with EU or sovereign residency satisfies the policy, every platform here qualifies.

What is the renewal path if you stay?

HCL's published policy raises term licenses 6 percent and support 9 percent at every renewal, on top of session metering that grows with adoption. Model three years of that against each candidate's quote.

Which content is behind a login?

Pages that depend on portal roles or virtual portal membership stay on a portal platform. Everything public is ordinary content and migrates to any platform here with an export and a template rebuild.

Who will build on it in three years?

HCL DX practitioners are largely WebSphere Portal veterans and new ones are rare. Ask each vendor for its community channels and the frameworks a new hire needs. Contentstack, SitecoreAI and Optimizely SaaS CMS draw on mainstream JavaScript and .NET pools.

How does content come out?

Web content libraries, portlet configurations and Leap forms do not export to anything another platform imports. Run a trial export through the DX REST APIs now, and confirm the next platform exports content, assets and configuration through an API you control.

Frequently asked questions

Why do companies leave HCL Digital Experience?

Cost, complexity and the lack of AI. Building on HCL DX means portlets and WebSphere administration with teams of five to ten specialists, implementations run four to eight months and often exceed $500,000, and renewals rise 6 percent a year. The platform has no MCP server, no AI agents, no landing page builder and no A/B testing, and the talent pool is roughly ten job postings worldwide.

What is the best alternative to HCL DX?

Contentstack for regulated content teams that want audited workflows and governed AI agents with nothing to patch, and SitecoreAI for multi-brand enterprises that want governance, compliance and personalization in one managed cloud. Liferay is the natural successor for the portal and intranet itself, Optimizely SaaS CMS suits marketing-led teams, and Magnolia and Jahia keep the Java and self-hosting options.

Is HCL Digital Experience end of life?

No. Versions 8.5 and 9.0 reached their final end of support on June 30, 2026, which completed the forced migration to Cloud Native 9.5. HCL DX 9.5 continues with roughly monthly cumulative fix releases and containerized deployment on Kubernetes. The platform is supported; the concern is its pace, its AI gap and its shrinking talent pool.

What replaces HCL DX for an employee intranet?

Liferay is the closest match, with field-level permissions, role-based dashboards, a knowledge base and connectors to Microsoft 365, Salesforce and SAP. Salesforce Experience Cloud serves employee service portals for organizations on Salesforce CRM. Content platforms such as Contentstack and SitecoreAI do not do intranets.

How long does an HCL DX migration take?

Plan on three to six months for a public site and six to twelve months for an intranet or portal with authentication, workflow and forms. Portlets, templates and Leap forms are rebuilt rather than moved; content comes out through the DX REST APIs. Ask any partner for a WebSphere Portal reference of similar size.
