Best Liferay Alternatives in 2026

Liferay is the portal that grew into a digital experience platform without ever shedding the portal. Organizations that bought it for logged-in experiences now carry a Java estate, a Jakarta migration and marketers who want a visual editor.

DXP Scorecard Analyst TeamReviewed Ratings updated 11 min read

The short answer

Contentstack and SitecoreAI are the strongest Liferay alternatives in 2026. Contentstack gives content teams 20-stage workflows, field-level permissions and AI agents with nothing to upgrade or patch. SitecoreAI matches Liferay's multi-brand governance and compliance as a managed cloud with bundled personalization. Optimizely SaaS CMS suits marketing-led teams, Magnolia and Jahia are the Java peers with lighter operations, and Salesforce Experience Cloud is where the authenticated portal itself goes.

Key takeaways

  • Nobody leaves Liferay because the permissions are weak. They leave because the Jakarta migration is a re-platforming project, production needs three to five Java specialists, and the marketing team waits weeks for a landing page.
  • Split the estate before you shortlist. Employee intranets, B2B commerce portals and partner extranets are what Liferay does well and few platforms here replace. Public sites and marketing content are what it does slowly, and every platform here does them better.
  • The portal has one real successor on this list. Salesforce Experience Cloud reads live CRM records under the same sharing model as internal staff and runs B2B Commerce on the same pages. Everything else here is a content platform that would need the portal rebuilt.
  • Compliance travels. Liferay holds ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 42001, and so, in various combinations, do SitecoreAI, Contentstack, Optimizely SaaS CMS, Acquia and Magnolia. Only self-hosting disappears on a managed cloud, so check whether procurement requires it.
  • Pricing gets clearer in any direction. Liferay publishes no price for any enterprise, SaaS or PaaS plan, meters active logged-in users and page views in the cloud, and bills per environment on premises. Contentstack publishes entry tiers, Magnolia publishes a floor, and every suite here sells a fixed subscription.

Our picks at a glance

Our analysts’ take

Liferay is the strongest platform we rate for logged-in experiences. Permissions can be set per resource, per content item and per field and inherit through an organization hierarchy, SAML and OpenID Connect single sign-on, LDAP and SCIM are built in, and the Kaleo workflow engine routes multi-step approvals by role. Native B2B commerce covers account hierarchies, contract pricing and quote workflows on the same pages as content, and the 2026.Q1 release added a headless CMS built on Liferay Objects, a generally available AI Hub and a $0 Free Tier. Organizations running employee intranets, partner extranets or B2B portals on it are often right to stay.

The reasons to leave are operational. The mandatory move from the javax to the jakarta Java namespace is described, including by Liferay, as a real project rather than an update, and it lands on top of the One Platform, One Liferay program that moves the legacy Web Content, Blogs and Documents and Media tools into maintenance mode. Self-hosted patching is manual, Free Tier customers get only the quarterly .0 release, and multi-factor authentication and SAML single sign-on still need an Enterprise Subscription key. Production teams run three to five people, implementations stretch from weeks to many months, and there is no co-editing, native email or video pipeline. Pricing for every enterprise plan is available only through sales, with SaaS metered on monthly active logged-in users and anonymous page views.

This guide rates eight realistic destinations. Two are headless and SaaS suites that remove the upgrade calendar entirely. Two are Java peers that keep the self-hosting option with lighter operations. One is the portal platform for organizations whose Liferay estate is really a customer or partner portal. Two are enterprise suites for multi-brand and compliance-heavy programs, and one is the Drupal platform for regulated site fleets. The ratings lean on low upkeep and speed to launch, because those are why Liferay customers look, then on marketer self-service and compliance, which they need to keep.

What to look for

  1. 1

    Upgrades you never schedule

Count the person-months your team spent on the Jakarta migration, quarterly releases and Elasticsearch tuning. Managed SaaS platforms here remove all of it; the Java peers keep some. Ask each vendor who runs the next major upgrade.

  2. 2

    Permissions that survive the move

Liferay's field-level permissions, organization hierarchy and SCIM provisioning are the hardest things to give up. Bring your real role matrix to each demo and ask the vendor to build it.

  3. 3

    Pages without a Java developer

Have a marketer build a landing page, change a fragment and publish in each trial. On Liferay that often means a Client Extension and a sprint. On most platforms here it is an afternoon with a visual editor.

  4. 4

    Logged-in experiences, kept or rebuilt

Decide whether the replacement must serve authenticated portals and B2B commerce. Salesforce Experience Cloud does; Jahia and Magnolia can with custom work; the suites and headless platforms cannot without a portal built in front of them.

  5. 5

    A price with one meter

Liferay meters active logged-in users and page views in the cloud and licenses per environment on premises. Ask each vendor what it meters, for the price at double today's traffic and whether SSO and multi-factor authentication sit behind a higher tier.

The shortlist, reviewed

#1Contentstack logo

Contentstack

Headless CMS
7.0/10
Fit score

The headless platform with governance closest to Liferay's and none of its operations. Permissions reach the field level, workflows run to 20 stages, publish rules gate releases by branch, language and environment, and Agent OS runs AI agents with every action logged. There is no platform upgrade to plan.

Best for
Content and digital teams with a front-end engineering group who want governed publishing and AI agents with nothing to run.
Watch out for
Nothing for portals, intranets or commerce of its own, no forms or email, and protected health and payment card data are prohibited by contract.
What it costs
Free plan, Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month plus $25 per extra user; Enterprise quote-only. AI runs on metered credits.

#2Optimizely SaaS CMS logo

Optimizely SaaS CMS

Traditional DXP
6.1/10
Fit score

The fully managed suite for Liferay customers whose estate has become a marketing program. Visual Builder edits pages and experiences in one place, A/B and multivariate testing are native, Opal orchestrates AI agents, and Optimizely handles every upgrade. ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2 and a HIPAA-enabled variant cover most regulated buyers.

Best for
Enterprise marketing teams that want experimentation and personalization in the editor and a platform nobody on staff has to operate.
Watch out for
Quote-only with median contracts near $78,000 a year and add-ons for experimentation and AI. No fit for intranets or employee experience, and transactional commerce lives in a separately licensed product.
What it costs
Quote-only. Priced on traffic and feature tier, with experimentation and AI as add-ons on credits.

#3SitecoreAI logo

SitecoreAI

Traditional DXP
6.1/10
Fit score

The enterprise suite that matches Liferay's multi-brand governance and compliance as a managed cloud. Site Collections isolate each brand with shared component libraries, and the customer data platform and Personalize are bundled. Agentic Studio ships 20 prebuilt agents under AI governance certified to ISO 42001, with SOC 2 and ISO 27001 behind it.

Best for
Large multi-brand enterprises with centralized IT that want governance and personalization in one managed platform and can absorb enterprise pricing.
Watch out for
Quote-only with no free tier, thin intranet and employee-experience tooling, no native commerce, and a record of pulling retirement dates forward on roughly 20 days' notice.
What it costs
Quote-only. No published tiers. Customer data platform and Personalize are included in the base license; AI usage has a fair-use cap of 50,000 interactions a year.

#4Magnolia logo

Magnolia

Traditional DXP
5.6/10
Fit score

A Swiss Java platform for organizations that want to keep the self-hosting option while marketers edit visually. The Pages app and Visual SPA Editor give in-context editing on React, Angular or Next.js front ends, Live Copy inherits content across sites, and certifications cover SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and Spain's ENS High.

Best for
Multi-country enterprises with an existing Java team that want single-tenant hosting in a chosen jurisdiction and a lighter stack than Liferay.
Watch out for
A small developer community, a Java-centric stack for anything beyond templates, no real-time co-editing, and native A/B testing switched off in August 2026 in favor of a separately licensed module. Intranets and commerce need heavy custom build.
What it costs
Published starting prices: DX Cloud from $6,000 per month, DX Core self-hosted from $3,500 per month, plus a free open-source Community Edition.

#5Jahia logo

Jahia

Traditional DXP
5.6/10
Fit score

The Java peer with the lightest cloud operations. Jahia Cloud upgrades are automated with blue-green deployment for about ten minutes of downtime or none, permissions reach individual fields, and field-level translation covers more than 100 languages across many virtual sites. The JavaScript Modules path lets React and TypeScript developers build without Java.

Best for
European organizations with multilingual, multi-brand estates and sovereignty requirements who want a Java platform with a managed, single-tenant cloud.
Watch out for
Non-cancelable annual contracts with seven metered consumption dimensions, no accessibility conformance report, no SOC 2 report, a very small community, and no commerce engine.
What it costs
Quote-only. CMS Enterprise and DXP Enterprise plans are published as a feature matrix with no dollar figures; Cloud contracts meter API calls, page views, profiles, storage and bandwidth.

#6Acquia logo

Acquia

Traditional DXP
5.5/10
Fit score

The enterprise Drupal platform for regulated organizations running many public sites. Acquia Cloud is FedRAMP Moderate authorized and holds HIPAA with a business associate agreement and PCI DSS Level 1. Site Factory runs hundreds of sites from one codebase, and Drupal's permissions and multilingual stack come closest to Liferay's among content platforms.

Best for
Government, healthcare and higher-education organizations with Drupal skills that need compliance paperwork and site fleets more than portals.
Watch out for
Quote-only enterprise tiers, production work that still needs Drupal specialists, and a stack of vendor-set deadlines including Drupal 10 end of support on December 9, 2026. It trades one upgrade calendar for another.
What it costs
Quote-only for the enterprise platform; tier names are public, dollar figures are not.

#7Salesforce Experience Cloud logo

Salesforce Experience Cloud

Traditional DXP
5.2/10
Fit score

The platform for the portal itself. Customers, partners and employees see live CRM records governed by the Salesforce sharing model, B2B Commerce runs on the same pages with account pricing and request-for-quote, and Agentforce puts governed AI agents in front of portal users. Compliance spans FedRAMP High and HIPAA, with nothing to host.

Best for
Organizations already running Salesforce CRM whose Liferay estate is a customer, partner or employee portal rather than a content site.
Watch out for
Internal seats from $195 per user per month plus unpublished per-login external licenses and an 8 to 10 percent renewal uplift. The content model is flat, there is no A/B testing or co-editing, and every layout needs a Lightning Web Component developer.
What it costs
Quote-only for external-user licenses. Internal seats start at $195 per user per month on the Core edition; secondhand figures put external users at $2 to $35 per login or member per month.

#8Adobe Experience Manager logo

Adobe Experience Manager

Traditional DXP
4.9/10
Fit score

The broadest platform we rate, for Liferay customers moving into the Adobe stack. Multi Site Manager governs hundreds of sites from a blueprint, AEM Assets is the strongest digital asset manager in the market, Adobe Target adds machine-learning personalization, and the compliance portfolio includes a HIPAA business associate agreement and FedRAMP.

Best for
Large enterprises standardized on Adobe Experience Cloud with multi-brand estates and heavy asset libraries.
Watch out for
Quote-only pricing metered on content requests, a proprietary Java stack at least as demanding as Liferay's, thin turnkey intranet features, and 111 vulnerabilities published in September 2026 alone.
What it costs

What you are really replacing when you leave Liferay

Liferay estates are usually three things on one Java platform. The migration gets simpler once you know which one drives the decision, because the shortlists barely overlap.

The intranet or extranet

Role-based dashboards, a knowledge base, message boards and connectors to Microsoft 365, Salesforce and SAP. This is Liferay's best use case and nothing here matches it fully. Salesforce Experience Cloud is the closest for customer and partner portals; employee intranets may be better served by a dedicated intranet product than by any CMS here.

The B2B commerce portal

Account hierarchies, contract pricing, restricted catalogs and quote workflows on content pages. Salesforce Experience Cloud runs B2B Commerce natively. Every other platform here hands commerce to a separate engine, so budget for one before comparing CMS prices.

The public site

Corporate pages, campaign sites and brand microsites. This is where Liferay is slow and where every platform here is faster. Contentstack, SitecoreAI and Optimizely SaaS CMS remove the operations entirely; Jahia and Magnolia keep the Java option with far less of it.

Questions to settle before you commit

Have you finished the Jakarta migration?

If the move to 2026.Q1 is still ahead of you, price it honestly against a migration off the platform. Doing the Jakarta work and then leaving within two years is the most expensive sequence available.

Which content is behind a login?

Pages that depend on organization-scoped roles, dashboards or commerce accounts stay on a portal platform. Everything public is ordinary content and migrates to any platform here with an export and a template rebuild.

Can you give up self-hosting?

Liferay runs on premises, in Liferay PaaS or as SaaS. Contentstack, SitecoreAI, Optimizely SaaS CMS and Salesforce Experience Cloud are cloud only. Jahia, Magnolia and Acquia keep a self-hosted or single-tenant option. If procurement requires on-premises, the list is short.

Where do workflows go?

Kaleo workflows with Groovy scripts and service-level tracking do not export. Document the approval chains you actually use, then ask each vendor to build the longest one in the demo. Contentstack's 20-stage workflows cover most.

Who patches the next platform?

Self-hosted Liferay means monthly service releases and a high vulnerability count applied by hand. Managed platforms patch themselves; Jahia and Magnolia publish their advisory process and backport fixes. Ask every vendor for its last twelve months of security advisories.

Frequently asked questions

Why do companies leave Liferay?

Operations and speed. The mandatory javax to jakarta migration is a re-platforming project, production needs a team of three to five Java specialists, self-hosted patching is manual, and marketers wait on developers for new layouts. Pricing is available only through sales, and SaaS plans meter active logged-in users and page views. The permissions, workflow and commerce are rarely the reason.

What is the best alternative to Liferay?

Contentstack for teams that want Liferay-grade permissions and workflows with nothing to operate, and SitecoreAI for multi-brand enterprises that want governance, compliance and personalization in one managed cloud. Optimizely SaaS CMS suits marketing-led teams, Jahia and Magnolia keep the Java and self-hosting options with lighter operations, and Salesforce Experience Cloud replaces the authenticated portal itself.

Can a headless CMS replace a Liferay portal?

For public content, yes. Contentstack carries field-level permissions, 20-stage workflows and field-level localization, and it removes upgrades entirely. What it does not include is a portal: no login experience for customers or partners, no role-based dashboards and no commerce. Those need Salesforce Experience Cloud, a dedicated intranet product or a custom build in front of the CMS.

What replaces Liferay for an employee intranet?

Nothing on a CMS shortlist does it fully. Liferay's intranet strengths, from the knowledge base and message boards to Microsoft 365 and SAP connectors, are portal features that content platforms such as Contentstack, SitecoreAI and Optimizely SaaS CMS do not have. Salesforce Experience Cloud serves employee service portals with HR and IT agents, and most organizations pair any CMS here with a dedicated intranet product.

How long does a Liferay migration take?

Plan on three to six months for a public site and six to twelve months for a portal with authenticated experiences, workflows and commerce. Kaleo workflows, Groovy scripts and portlet customizations do not transfer and are rebuilt rather than moved. Content exports through Liferay's headless APIs, so the content itself is the shorter item.
