A true data-driven, real-world breakdown of Kontent.ai vs Sanity from the implementation experts who build it.
Reviewed October 2026 · 184 criteria · 10 categories · View methodology →
Both brands use a similar color, so Sanity is shown in a contrasting accent on this page.
Choose Sanity if developers own the content platform and you want schema as code, real-time collaboration, a deep AI agent toolkit and a published price list. Choose Kontent.ai if content and compliance teams lead, you need the vendor's own ISO 27001 and a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, and editors should model content and run workflows without code. Neither ships personalization, testing or forms. The choice depends on who owns the platform and how strict your security review is.
A high-level view of how the two platforms compare across key areas.
| Area | Kontent.ai | Sanity |
|---|---|---|
| Compliance | Holds its own SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and ISO 42001, and signs a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement. | SOC 2 Type 2 covers only Security; the ISO 27001 and HIPAA listings belong to host Google Cloud, with no Business Associate Agreement. |
| Pricing model | Quote only above a free one-user, non-commercial Developer plan; cost scales with seats, content types, items and languages. | Free plan with 20 seats, Growth at $15 per seat a month, every overage rate published; Enterprise is quote only. |
| Developer model | Content types are modeled in the web interface, delivered over REST and GraphQL, with official SDKs for six languages. | Schema is TypeScript code, queried with GROQ (Sanity's own query language), and the editing app is an extensible React app. |
| Localization | Languages are built-in variants with fallback chains, each with its own workflow step, schedule and permissions. | Localization comes from official plugins, fallbacks are written by hand in queries, and the plugins changed their data format in 2026. |
| Ecosystem | Small community: SDK repositories carry about 50 GitHub stars, and developers usually have to be trained. | Large community: nearly four million monthly npm downloads of the core package, 335 plugins and 435 community guides. |
| Upgrades and change | Vendor-managed updates arrive additively with no customer work, backed by a subscribable breaking-change notice. | Weekly Studio releases; 2026 brought plugin data format changes and a Portable Text bug that lost content. |
Sanity publishes its price list. The Free plan covers 20 seats and 10,000 documents with no credit card, Growth costs $15 per seat a month, and every overage rate is listed, with no minimum contract term. The catch: single sign-on, custom roles, the full audit trail, backups and the 99.9% uptime SLA are Enterprise only, and Enterprise is quote only. Direct email support on Growth is a $799 a month add-on.
Kontent.ai is quote only above its free Developer plan, which allows one user, two languages and non-commercial use. Quotes scale on seats, content types, content items and languages under a Fair Use Policy, and third-party listings range from a few hundred dollars to over $2,499 a month. Custom roles, environments, audit logs and SSO sit on the Scale and Enterprise plans.
Both are fully managed, so the only hosting bill is the frontend, and both need a separate personalization, forms and analytics stack. Over several years, Sanity is cheaper to start and easier to forecast. Kontent.ai bundles governance and support that Sanity reserves for Enterprise contracts.
Both are cloud-only SaaS with no self-hosted option, so your team builds and hosts only the frontend. Kontent.ai runs on Microsoft Azure and Sanity's backend runs on Google Cloud; neither needs a server team. The real difference is where the content model lives. In Kontent.ai, content types are built in the web interface and the concepts map to ordinary headless patterns, so a generalist JavaScript or .NET developer is productive within days. Its Next.js sample app wires up preview and Web Spotlight, its visual editing mode, automatically. There is no local CMS server, so development always depends on the cloud service.
Sanity puts the schema in TypeScript code, which developers like and editors cannot change. GROQ, Portable Text, perspectives, Functions and Blueprints are Sanity-specific concepts, so a React developer needs one to two weeks to get productive. In return you get a local dev server with hot reload, an official GitHub Action for deployments and visual editing guides for five frameworks. Kontent.ai upgrades are vendor-managed and additive. Sanity Studio ships weekly and can update itself, but 2026 brought vendor-timed data format changes in its localization plugins.
Neither platform is a marketing suite. Both lack audience segments, visitor profiles, form builders and marketing automation, so personalization runs through partners such as Uniform, Conscia or Optimizely. Sanity is slightly further along: Content Variants (in beta) can hold per-audience and A/B test content, though another tool still decides who sees what. Kontent.ai offers Recombee as an official recommendation integration.
For editors, Kontent.ai is the more governed tool. Multiple custom workflows per content type, per-language steps and schedules, language-scoped roles and hierarchical taxonomies with AI auto-tagging are built in, and Web Spotlight gives marketers a page tree with in-context editing. Sanity offers real-time co-editing with presence and comments, click-to-edit preview on the live site and richer rich text. New page types in Sanity need a developer.
For assets and brands, Sanity's Media Library adds video transcoding and streaming (Enterprise plus a video add-on), and cross-dataset references share corporate content with brand sites on Enterprise. Kontent.ai runs several brands from one project through Spaces and Collections, but video relies on Cloudinary or Scaleflex.
Kontent.ai focuses on governed automation for content teams. Its Expert Agents, launched March 31, 2026, handle SEO and Generative Engine Optimization (visibility in AI answer engines), translation, compliance and content cleanup in bulk. Every action is logged, attributed and reversible, nothing publishes without human approval, and the platform holds ISO/IEC 42001 certification for AI management. The limits: the vendor chooses the model, there is no option to bring your own key, and there is no native image generation.
Sanity offers the broader developer toolkit. Content Agent runs bulk writing, translation, audits and image edits, stages every change as a draft, and is included on every plan, Free too. Two hosted MCP servers (Model Context Protocol, the standard that lets AI assistants act on a system) connect Claude Code, Cursor and others, and official guides cover LangChain, the OpenAI Agents SDK and the Vercel AI SDK. Sanity Context accepts your own model and key, and usage dashboards with spending limits track AI credits. Its custom instructions are guidance, not enforcement. Kontent.ai also ships an official MCP server, released April 2025.
These are independent vendors, so a move either way is a full replatform. Content can be exported through each platform's APIs, but the model must be rebuilt. Kontent.ai's linked items, taxonomies and language variants become Sanity references, tag documents and a localization plugin, and rich text must be converted to or from Portable Text, Sanity's JSON rich text format. Frontend data fetching changes from REST or GraphQL calls to GROQ queries, or the reverse. Preview, webhooks and integrations such as Phrase, Shopify or Algolia must be reconnected.
Teams usually move to Sanity when developers want the model in code and a published price. Teams move to Kontent.ai when a compliance review fails or editors are tired of waiting on developers. Do not leave Kontent.ai if you rely on its HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, its own ISO certificates or per-language workflows. Do not leave Sanity if your product depends on custom Studio apps, Functions or its agent APIs. Kontent.ai grew out of the Kentico group and its talent pool is small, so a move to it usually means training your developers.

Every score on this page is backed by written reasoning and cited evidence. Open any criterion to read it. Scores follow public evidence only; vendor membership never affects them.
Kontent.ai. It holds its own SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 and ISO/IEC 42001, offers data residency in the EU, US, Canada or Australia, and signs a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement. Sanity's SOC 2 covers only the Security criterion, its ISO and HIPAA listings belong to Google Cloud, and it offers no Business Associate Agreement.
Kontent.ai suits that team better. Editors create content types, workflows and taxonomies in the web interface, and Web Spotlight gives in-context editing. Sanity is cheaper to start and one developer can run it, but every new page type or content model change needs that developer to edit schema code.
Kontent.ai support is rated among the best in the category, with fast responses and proactive customer success check-ins, though the strongest SLAs sit on higher plans. Sanity includes only community support on Free and Growth; direct email support costs $799 a month, and the 99.9% uptime SLA is Enterprise only.
Both do, at different depths. Sanity Connect for Shopify syncs catalogs both ways in real time, and a separate connector covers Salesforce Commerce Cloud. Kontent.ai offers product picker elements for Shopify, commercetools and Magento. Neither manages cart, checkout, merchandising or promotions, so those stay in the commerce platform.
Kontent.ai. Every item has built-in language variants with fallback chains, and each language gets its own workflow step, schedule and permissions, plus Phrase, XTM and GlobalLink connectors. Sanity relies on official plugins, fallbacks are written by hand in queries, and those plugins changed their stored data format in 2026.
Sanity scores higher on overall suite capability (66 vs 60). Kontent.ai wins 2 of the 10 scoring categories and Sanity wins 7, with 1 too close to call.
Sanity scores higher on total cost of ownership (75 vs 66), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.
Sanity scores higher on build simplicity (72 vs 68), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. Kontent.ai scores higher on operational ease (70 vs 65), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.
Sanity scores higher on fit for marketing sites (51 vs 43), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.
Sanity scores higher on AI enablement (74 vs 63), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
