Best DatoCMS Alternatives in 2026

DatoCMS is a polished content layer for one marketing site in Europe. Teams leave when they need a second brand, a US region, AI in the editor or a price that stays put.

DXP Scorecard Analyst TeamReviewed Ratings updated 11 min read

The short answer

Contentstack and Storyblok are the strongest DatoCMS alternatives in 2026. Contentstack shares one asset library across many brands, publishes entry prices from $29 a month and runs governed AI agents; Storyblok gives marketers a visual editor across several sites with EU or US hosting. Contentful and Kontent.ai suit compliance-led enterprises, Sanity and Hygraph suit developer-led teams, Prismic and Agility CMS suit small marketing sites, and Strapi suits open-source teams.

Key takeaways

  • The 2026 pricing changes are the trigger for most DatoCMS reviews. They applied to existing plans, cut included environments from eight to three and locales to five, and added separate rates for reading and writing through the API. There is still no spending cap.
  • One project per site is the structural limit. There is no content sharing across projects, no shared component library and no schema inheritance, and each project is billed separately. A second brand doubles the bill.
  • Data is hosted in the EU only, on AWS Ireland. Organizations that must keep data in the US or Asia-Pacific have no option on any plan, and DatoCMS has no SOC 2 report in its own name, no HIPAA agreement and no accessibility statement.
  • DatoCMS said in March 2026 that it is deliberately not an AI-first CMS. Teams that want writing assistance, agents or semantic search in the editor will find them at Contentstack, Sanity, Kontent.ai and Storyblok rather than in a plugin with their own provider key.
  • What you give up is real. The Imgix and Mux media pipeline, the 400-plus locales and Visual Editing on every plan are hard to match. Make sure the reason you are leaving is worth the media work you will rebuild.

Our picks at a glance

Our analysts’ take

DatoCMS is an outstanding content layer for a marketing site or a media-rich publisher. Images are transformed on the fly by Imgix, video streams through Mux with 50,000 minutes included, and Cloudflare serves it all with a 97 percent cache hit ratio. Structured Text stores rich text as structured data, Modular Content nests to any depth, and localization works field by field across more than 400 locales. Visual Editing arrived on every plan, free included, in February 2026. European teams running one site on Next.js or Astro should probably stay.

The teams that leave have outgrown the shape of the product. Each site is its own project, with no content sharing, no shared components and no schema inheritance, so a brand portfolio pays almost in proportion to its brands. Data lives in the EU only, with no US or Asia-Pacific region on any plan, and DatoCMS holds ISO 27001 but no SOC 2 report of its own, no HIPAA agreement and no accessibility statement. The 2026 pricing changes were applied to existing plans: included environments fell from eight to three at €39 a month each beyond that, locales fell to five, and reads and writes now meter separately with no spending cap. In March 2026 the company reaffirmed that it is deliberately not an AI-first CMS. SSO and audit logs remain Enterprise-only.

This guide rates nine destinations. Two are enterprise headless platforms with multi-site governance and published entry prices. Two are compliance and localization specialists. Two are developer-led content platforms with a choice of hosting region. Two are managed services for small marketing sites, and one is open source you host where you like. The ratings lean equally on global and multi-brand operation and on budget predictability, because those are the two exits, then on built-in AI and marketer self-service.

What to look for

  1. 1

    Many sites, one content model

If a second brand is why you are leaving, ask each vendor to show content shared between sites, a component library used by two sites and a schema change that reaches both. Contentstack, Storyblok and Kontent.ai have answers; Hygraph and Prismic copy and diverge like DatoCMS.

  2. 2

    A region you can choose

Write down where your data must live. Hygraph offers EU, US and Asia-Pacific on every plan, Agility CMS offers five Azure regions, Contentful and Contentstack host in the US with EU on Enterprise, and Storyblok hosts in the EU or US. Sanity runs in one EU region.

  3. 3

A bill that does not change under you

DatoCMS applied its 2026 price changes to existing customers. Ask each vendor for its notice period on price changes, whether limits are grandfathered, and whether there is a spending cap.

  4. 4

    Media without a separate vendor

Imgix transforms and Mux video are what you are replacing. Prismic uses the same Imgix service, Contentstack has a real asset management product, and Storyblok and Sanity transform images but not video.

  5. 5

AI that is actually in the editor

If you want writing help, translation or agents inside the CMS, ask to see them on your content in the trial. Contentstack, Sanity, Kontent.ai and Storyblok ship them as products; Hygraph and Strapi stop at assists.

The shortlist, reviewed

#1Contentstack logo

Contentstack

Headless CMS
7.1/10
Fit score

The enterprise headless platform that solves the multi-brand problem DatoCMS cannot. Assets spaces let one media library serve many stacks, workflows run to 20 stages, localization works per field with fallback chains, and Agent OS runs governed AI agents with every action logged. Build and Growth plans have published prices since October 2026.

Best for
Marketing organizations running several brands or regions that need shared assets, approval chains and AI agents at a published entry price.
Watch out for
Content types still have to be copied between stacks, standard plans carry only a 99.50 percent uptime commitment, and health and payment data are prohibited by contract.
What it costs
Free plan, Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month plus $25 per extra user; Enterprise quote-only. AI runs on metered credits.

#2Storyblok logo

Storyblok

Headless CMS
6.8/10
Fit score

The visual editor DatoCMS only recently caught up with, on a platform built for several sites. Editors click components on the rendered page and drag them into place, bloks nest to any depth, Space Blueprints speed up new sites, and FlowMotion automates workflows with AI steps. Hosting is offered in the EU or the US.

Best for
Marketing and brand teams managing several web properties who want visual editing and a choice of EU or US hosting on published plans.
Watch out for
Video is file storage with no transcoding, the jump from Growth to Growth Plus is steep, and SSO, GraphQL and the enterprise features sit on quote-only tiers.
What it costs
Starter is free; Growth is $99 a month and Growth Plus $349 a month, with usage add-on packs. Premium and Elite are quote-only.

#3Contentful logo

Contentful

Headless CMS
6.7/10
Fit score

The enterprise reference headless CMS, hosted in the US by default with EU residency available. Four purpose-built APIs, field-level localization with connectors to Phrase, Smartling and Lokalise, and the broadest compliance file here: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and audit logs streamed to your own storage. Its remote MCP server is generally available.

Best for
Global content programs with an enterprise budget that need auditable governance, translation workflows and a US region.
Watch out for
Only the $300 a month Lite plan is priced, SSO and custom roles are Enterprise-only, and Salesforce closed its acquisition on September 1, 2026 without an integration roadmap.
What it costs
Free plan, Lite at $300 per month; Premium and Enterprise quote-only. AI Actions are metered.

#4Sanity logo

Sanity

Headless CMS
6.6/10
Fit score

The developer's content platform and the clearest answer to DatoCMS's AI stance. Content models are code, Portable Text stores rich text as structured data much as Structured Text does, real-time co-editing is built in, and two hosted MCP servers plus Content Agent lead the category. The free plan allows 20 seats and commercial use.

Best for
Developer-led teams on Next.js who want Structured Text-grade modeling plus AI agents and a generous free tier.
Watch out for
Marketers depend on how developers customize the Studio. SSO, custom roles and the audit trail are Enterprise-only, the backend runs in one EU region, and Sanity ships frequent breaking changes.
What it costs
Free plan, Growth at $15 per seat per month (viewers free), Enterprise quote-only. AI credits are published at $0.05 each.

#5Kontent.ai logo

Kontent.ai

Headless CMS
6.5/10
Fit score

The compliance and localization specialist. Kontent.ai holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 and was the first CMS certified to ISO 42001 for AI management, with HIPAA coverage available. Localization works element by element, Collections share content between brands inside a project, and Expert Agents automate translation under human approval.

Best for
Compliance-sensitive enterprises in finance, healthcare and the public sector that DatoCMS's certification file ruled out.
Watch out for
Pricing is a calculator that ends in a sales quote, content cannot be shared across projects, and there is nothing for personalization or forms.
What it costs
Quote-only beyond a free Developer plan. Pricing is calculated on seats, content types, items, languages and environments.

#6Hygraph logo

Hygraph

Headless CMS
6.0/10
Fit score

The GraphQL-native platform for teams that want a choice of region. Every model generates a typed GraphQL API, Content Federation pulls remote sources into one graph, and Hobby and Growth projects can be hosted in the EU, US or Asia-Pacific. Its MCP server is generally available and the Enterprise price range is published.

Best for
Developer-led teams building Next.js, Nuxt or Astro sites who need US or Asia-Pacific hosting and one typed API over several systems.
Watch out for
Scheduled publishing, custom workflows, custom roles and audit logs are Enterprise-only, Enterprise runs from about $32,000 to $300,000 a year, and multi-brand means copying schemas, as at DatoCMS.
What it costs
Hobby is free; Growth from $199 per month with published limits and overage rates. Enterprise is published as a range of about $32,000 to $300,000 a year.

#7Prismic logo

Prismic

Headless CMS
5.8/10
Fit score

The lowest-cost managed option for a marketing site, with the same Imgix image service DatoCMS uses. Developers build slices, editors arrange them in the Page Builder, the TypeScript tooling gets a Next.js team to a working site in a day, and the official MCP server is free on every plan.

Best for
Small teams on Next.js, Nuxt or SvelteKit who want a simple page builder for editors and US hosting at a low price.
Watch out for
No content validation at all, only two workflow states, no EU region on any plan, and an eight-locale cap on the $675 a month Platinum plan.
What it costs
Free plan; Starter $10, Small $25, Medium $150 and Platinum $675 a month, each with published user, API and bandwidth limits. Enterprise is custom.

#8Agility CMS logo

Agility CMS

Headless CMS
5.5/10
Fit score

The headless CMS that keeps pages, sitemaps and redirects inside the CMS and lets you pick the region. Editors create pages from developer-defined templates and arrange modules in Content Zones, Web Studio adds click-to-edit preview, and customers choose one of five Azure regions in the US, Canada, Europe or Australia. Agility holds its own SOC 2 report.

Best for
Mid-market marketing teams on Next.js or .NET who want editors to own page creation and need a specific data region.
Watch out for
Essentials is $699 a month billed annually with a five-user cap, SSO and non-US regions need Enterprise, and the community is small.

No free plan beyond a proof of concept; Essentials is $699 per month billed annually with a five-user cap, and Enterprise is quote-only.

#9Strapi logo

Strapi

Headless CMS
5.1/10
Fit score

The most widely adopted open-source headless CMS, hosted wherever your data must live. The MIT-licensed core runs on your own PostgreSQL or MySQL with unlimited locales and content types, the version 5 Plugin SDK is the strongest in its class, and the first-party MCP server reached general availability ahead of its peers.

Best for
Developer-led teams on Node.js who need a region DatoCMS does not offer and want an open-source CMS with no paywalls on the core.
Watch out for
No visual editor, no real-time collaboration and no personalization, and the media pipeline is far behind Imgix and Mux. Self-hosting means your team owns upgrades and patching.
What it costs
Free open-source core. Strapi Cloud plans are published with per-tier limits and overage rates; Enterprise is quote-only.

What you are really replacing when you leave DatoCMS

DatoCMS bundles three things that most alternatives price or build separately. Knowing which one you depend on tells you what the move costs beyond the subscription.

The media pipeline

Imgix transforms, Mux streaming with 50,000 minutes included and a 97 percent cache hit ratio. Prismic keeps the Imgix half, Contentstack has a full asset management product, and everyone else needs a video service bolted on.

Localization depth

Field-level translation across more than 400 locales with fallback chains and per-locale permissions. Kontent.ai and Contentstack match it, Contentful and Storyblok come close, and Prismic caps at eight locales below Enterprise.

A price list you can read

Every DatoCMS plan publishes its limits and overage rates, even after the 2026 changes. Storyblok, Contentstack, Sanity, Hygraph, Prismic and Strapi Cloud do the same. Kontent.ai and Agility CMS start with sales.

Questions to settle before you migrate

Is a second project really the problem?

Some teams leave DatoCMS for multi-brand reasons that a second project and a schema export would have solved. Two brands with no shared content may be cheaper to keep; five with shared components is a different case.

Where does Structured Text go?

Export a record with nested blocks, inline items and links. Sanity's Portable Text and Contentful's rich text import it with mapping; Storyblok, Contentstack and Strapi have their own formats; Prismic's rich text is the least structured here.

Who serves the video?

If you use Mux through DatoCMS, every pick here needs a separate Mux or Cloudflare Stream account to replace it. Price that first, because it can erase the saving.

Which plan carries SSO and audit logs?

DatoCMS gates both to Enterprise. Contentstack, Storyblok and Strapi publish where they sit; Sanity, Hygraph and Contentful gate them like DatoCMS; Kontent.ai and Agility CMS answer in a quote. Get it in writing.

Do you want AI in the editor or not?

DatoCMS's stance is a feature for some teams and a gap for others. If your editors never asked for writing help, Hygraph and Prismic keep the editor similarly quiet. If they have, Contentstack, Sanity and Kontent.ai ship AI as products.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to DatoCMS?

Contentstack for organizations running several brands that need shared assets, approval chains and governed AI agents at a published entry price, and Storyblok for marketing teams that want a visual editor across several sites with EU or US hosting. Contentful and Kontent.ai suit compliance-led enterprises, Sanity and Hygraph developer-led teams, and Prismic and Agility CMS small marketing sites.

Why are teams leaving DatoCMS?

Four reasons come up. The 2026 pricing changes applied to existing plans and cut included environments and locales. Each site is its own project with no content sharing, so multi-brand estates get expensive. Data is hosted in the EU only. And DatoCMS has said it is deliberately not an AI-first CMS, so there is no AI in the editor.

Does DatoCMS host data in the United States?

No. All DatoCMS data is stored in the EU, on AWS Ireland and Cloudflare R2, with no US or Asia-Pacific option on any plan. Hygraph offers EU, US and Asia-Pacific regions on every plan, Agility CMS offers five Azure regions including two in the US, and Contentful and Contentstack host in the US.

What is the cheapest DatoCMS alternative?

Strapi is free open-source software on your own hosting. Among managed platforms, Prismic starts at $10 a month, Contentstack's Build plan at $29, Storyblok at $99 and Hygraph at $199, and Sanity's free plan allows 20 seats. Agility CMS is the outlier at $699 a month.

How hard is it to migrate from DatoCMS to another headless CMS?

The content model is the easy part: models, blocks and localized fields export through the management API, and the Schema Import and Export plugin produces a clean definition. The work is converting Structured Text, rewriting the GraphQL queries in the front end and replacing the Imgix and Mux media URLs. Plan a few weeks of developer time for a marketing site and more for a media-heavy one.
