Best Prismic Alternatives in 2026
Prismic made slices the easiest way for a small team to ship a marketing site. The limits that come with that simplicity, from two workflow states to eight locales, are what send teams looking.
The short answer
Storyblok and Contentstack are the strongest Prismic alternatives in 2026. Storyblok gives editors a visual page builder with approval workflows and EU hosting on published plans from $99 a month; Contentstack adds 20-stage workflows, field-level permissions and governed AI agents on plans from $29 a month. DatoCMS is the closest like-for-like for small multilingual teams, Kontent.ai suits compliance buyers, Sanity developer-led teams, and Webflow suits marketers who want no developer.
Key takeaways
- Prismic's gaps are design decisions, not missing features. There is no content validation of any kind, only Draft and Published as workflow states, and no app framework for extending the editor. No plan upgrade fixes them.
- Locales are the pricing cliff. Every plan caps languages, from two on Free to eight on the $675 a month Platinum plan, and the ninth locale is an Enterprise conversation. Multilingual teams should compare on the number of markets they expect in three years.
- Data lives in one US region on every plan, Prismic publishes no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 of its own, and there is no audit log. European buyers and anyone with a security questionnaire will find the alternatives easier.
- The December 2023 pricing overhaul, cited at six to ten times for some accounts with under 30 days of notice, is still why buyers hesitate on multi-year commitments. Several alternatives publish every limit and overage rate.
- Slices move well. The content model of reusable sections that editors arrange has a direct equivalent at Storyblok, DatoCMS, Agility CMS and Contentstack. The front end queries and the imgix image URLs are where the migration work sits.
Our picks at a glance
Visual editing, real workflows, EU hosting.
400 locales, validation, Visual Editing on Free.
Content as code, generous free tier.
20-stage workflows from $29 a month.
ISO 42001, HIPAA coverage, element-level localization.
Design, host and test in one place.
Our analysts’ take
Prismic is one of the cheapest credible ways to run a professional marketing site on Next.js, Nuxt or SvelteKit. Developers build slices, editors arrange them in the Page Builder, images are served through imgix with automatic AVIF and WebP conversion, and Slice Machine regenerates TypeScript types on every model change. A solo developer can deliver a marketing site in one to three weeks, the free plan permits commercial use, and the official MCP server lets AI agents edit content as drafts a human still publishes. Small teams that fit this picture should stay.
Teams leave when they grow into the walls. Prismic has deliberately chosen not to implement content validation, so no field can be required and no value constrained. The workflow has two states, Draft and Published, with no approval chain or audit trail. All data sits in one US region with no EU option on any plan, Prismic publishes no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 covering its own platform, and it has confirmed it offers no HIPAA agreement. Multilingual sites hit an eight-locale ceiling even on the $675 a month Platinum plan, and Medium and Platinum plans auto-upgrade on overage. SSO, custom roles and backups are Enterprise-only, and the December 2023 price overhaul, which raised some accounts six to ten times on short notice, still makes buyers wary.
This guide rates nine destinations. Four are managed headless platforms with a page builder for editors, two are enterprise headless platforms that sell governance and compliance, one is a developer-first content platform, one is a visual site builder for marketers, and one is open source. The ratings lean hardest on marketer self-service, because a page builder is what Prismic teams refuse to give up, then on budget predictability and on security and compliance, with global and multi-brand operation as the fourth lens because locale caps drive so many exits.
What to look for
- 1
A page builder your editors keep
Prismic editors arrange slices; whatever comes next has to match. Have your editors build a landing page in each trial. Storyblok, DatoCMS, Agility CMS and Webflow show the rendered page; Sanity and Contentstack depend on preview wiring developers set up.
- 2
Required fields and approvals
Ask each vendor to show a required field, a value list and a three-step approval. Every platform here except Webflow does all three on published plans, which is the clearest break from Prismic.
- 3
Locales without a cliff
Count the languages you will run in three years, then read each plan's locale limit and the price of the next one. DatoCMS includes five on Professional with a per-locale add-on, Storyblok prices locales in its plan table, and Kontent.ai and Contentstack cap only at Enterprise scale.
- 4
Where the data lives
If you need EU hosting, DatoCMS, Storyblok and Kontent.ai host there; Hygraph and Agility CMS let you choose a region; Contentstack and Contentful offer EU residency on Enterprise plans. Ask for the SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certificate in the vendor's own name.
- 5
A price that stays put
Ask for the full limits table and the overage rates in writing, and for the notice period on price changes. Storyblok, DatoCMS, Sanity and Contentstack publish all of it; Agility CMS and Kontent.ai start the conversation with sales.

The shortlist, reviewed
Storyblok
The natural upgrade from slices. Storyblok's bloks nest to any depth, editors click components on the rendered page and drag them into place, and custom workflows, SCIM provisioning and scoped access tokens cover the governance Prismic lacks. Hosting is available in the EU, and FlowMotion automates approval routing.
- Best for
- Marketing teams with a development partner who want Prismic-style composition plus real workflows and EU data residency.
- Watch out for
- The jump from Growth at $99 to Growth Plus at $349 is driven by asset caps, SSO and custom roles at scale sit on quote-only tiers, and Storyblok ships its own stream of breaking SDK changes.
- What it costs
- Starter is free; Growth is $99 a month and Growth Plus $349 a month, with usage add-on packs. Premium and Elite are quote-only.
Contentstack
The enterprise headless platform with published entry prices. Workflows run to 20 stages, Publish Rules gate releases by language and environment, permissions reach field level and localization works per field with fallback chains. Agent OS runs governed AI agents, and Build and Growth plans have published prices since October 2026.
- Best for
- Content teams that outgrew Prismic's two-state workflow and need approvals, SSO and an audit trail across many languages.
- Watch out for
- Standard plans carry only a 99.50 percent uptime commitment, health and payment card data are prohibited by contract, and there is no visual page builder in the Prismic sense.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month plus $25 per extra user; Enterprise quote-only. AI runs on metered credits.
Webflow
The visual site builder for teams that would rather not have a developer in the loop. The Designer canvas builds pages with Flexbox and Grid, Edit Mode lets marketers change live pages, Optimize adds A/B testing and personalization, and hosting on Cloudflare's network is included. A new user can publish within an hour.
- Best for
- Marketing and design teams running brand and campaign sites who want SEO tooling, testing and hosting in one subscription.
- Watch out for
- Content is stored in a proprietary format that exports poorly, rich text comes out as HTML rather than structured data, data is stored only in the US, and there is no GraphQL endpoint for headless use.
- What it costs
- Published. Site plans from $15 per month, Premium at $25 per month (annual), seats from $15 to $39 per month. Optimize from $299 per month.
Sanity
The developer's content platform. Content models are code, Portable Text stores rich text as structured data, validation rules can check a whole document, and real-time co-editing is built into the content store. The free plan allows 20 seats and commercial use, and its MCP servers lead the category for AI-assisted content work.
- Best for
- Developer-led teams on Next.js who want deeper modeling and validation than Prismic allows and are happy to customize the editing Studio.
- Watch out for
- Marketers depend on how well developers customize the Studio. SSO, custom roles and the audit trail are Enterprise-only, the Growth plan caps documents at 25,000, and Sanity ships frequent breaking changes.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Growth at $15 per seat per month (viewers free), Enterprise quote-only. AI credits are published at $0.05 each.
Kontent.ai
The compliance and localization specialist. Kontent.ai holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 and was the first CMS certified to ISO 42001 for AI management, with HIPAA coverage available. Localization works element by element, multi-step workflows gate transitions by role, and Expert Agents automate translation under human approval.
- Best for
- Compliance-sensitive organizations in finance, healthcare and the public sector that Prismic's US-only hosting ruled out.
- Watch out for
- Pricing is a calculator that ends in a sales quote, the free Developer plan is restrictive, and there is no page builder, personalization or forms.
- What it costs
- Quote-only beyond a free Developer plan. Pricing is calculated on seats, content types, items, languages and environments.
Contentful
The enterprise reference headless CMS. Four purpose-built APIs, field-level localization with translation connectors to Phrase, Smartling and Lokalise, and the broadest compliance file here, including SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and audit logs streamed to your own storage. Personalization became a first-party engine in March 2026.
- Best for
- Marketing organizations moving from a small site to a global content program with an enterprise budget.
- Watch out for
- Only the $300 a month Lite plan is priced, SSO, custom roles and EU residency are Enterprise-only, and Salesforce closed its acquisition on September 1, 2026 without an integration roadmap.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Lite at $300 per month; Premium and Enterprise quote-only. AI Actions are metered.
DatoCMS
The closest fit for a Prismic team that needs validation and languages. Modular Content works like slices, Structured Text stores rich text as structured data, field-level localization covers more than 400 locales with fallback chains, and Visual Editing has been on every plan since February 2026. Images run through Imgix, as at Prismic.
- Best for
- Small marketing and publishing teams with one developer who need required fields, approvals and many locales at a published price.
- Watch out for
- Data is hosted in the EU only, there is no SOC 2 report in DatoCMS's own name, SSO and audit logs are Enterprise features, and the 2026 pricing changes cut included locales to five on existing plans.
- What it costs
- Free developer plan, Professional at €99 per month, Scale at €199 per month, each with published limits and overage rates. Enterprise is quote-only.
Agility CMS
The headless CMS that keeps pages, sitemaps and redirects inside the CMS. Editors create pages from developer-defined templates and arrange modules in Content Zones, Web Studio adds click-to-edit preview, and customers pick one of five Azure regions at setup. The hosted MCP server has been generally available since June 2026.
- Best for
- Mid-market marketing teams on Next.js or .NET who want editors to own page creation and need a Canadian, European or Australian data region.
- Watch out for
- The free plan is gone. Essentials is $699 a month billed annually with a five-user cap, SSO and non-US regions need Enterprise, and the community and integration catalog are small.
- What it costs
- No free plan beyond a proof of concept; Essentials is $699 per month billed annually with a five-user cap, and Enterprise is quote-only.
Strapi
The most widely adopted open-source headless CMS. Dynamic Zones work like slices, Conditional Fields and validation cover what Prismic leaves out, the MIT-licensed core runs on your own PostgreSQL or MySQL, and the first-party MCP server reached general availability ahead of its peers. Strapi Cloud publishes every limit and overage rate.
- Best for
- Developer-led teams on Node.js who want an open-source CMS with no locale caps and the option to host wherever their data must live.
- Watch out for
- No visual editor, no real-time collaboration and no personalization. Self-hosting means your team owns upgrades and security patching against a weekly release schedule.
- What it costs
- Free open-source core. Strapi Cloud plans are published with per-tier limits and overage rates; Enterprise is quote-only.
The three walls Prismic teams hit
Prismic customers rarely leave over price alone. They leave when one of three limits turns into a blocker, and each one points at a different shortlist.
Content integrity
No required fields, no value lists and no broken-reference detection means every content rule lives in your build pipeline. DatoCMS, Storyblok, Sanity and Contentstack validate in the editor, and Sanity's rules can check a whole document.
Governance and compliance
Two workflow states, no audit log, US-only hosting and no SOC 2 in Prismic's own name stop at the security questionnaire. Contentstack and Kontent.ai are built for that review; Storyblok and DatoCMS clear it for most European mid-market buyers.
Languages and brands
Eight locales on Platinum and one repository per site make multilingual, multi-brand estates expensive. DatoCMS and Kontent.ai lead on localization; Storyblok and Contentstack handle several sites from one account; Strapi has no locale cap at all.
Questions to settle before you migrate
How many slices do you really have?
Export your custom types and count the slices and variations. Each becomes a component in the new system. A site with 15 slices moves in weeks; one with 60 needs a content model review first.
What happens to the images?
Prismic serves images through imgix URLs with transformation parameters baked into the front end. DatoCMS uses the same Imgix syntax, Storyblok and Contentstack have their own image services, and Sanity has its own URL builder. Budget the rewrite.
Which plan carries SSO and roles?
Get the plan name and price in writing for each vendor. Contentstack and Storyblok publish most of it, DatoCMS and Sanity gate it to Enterprise like Prismic does, and Agility CMS and Kontent.ai answer only in a quote.
Do you need a developer at all?
If the honest answer is no, Webflow is the only platform here that removes one. Every other pick, like Prismic, needs a developer to build the components editors arrange.
What does the AI work look like next?
If your team uses Prismic's free MCP server and AI landing page builder, check the replacement. Storyblok, Sanity, Contentstack, Agility CMS and Strapi all run MCP servers; DatoCMS keeps AI out of the editor by design.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Prismic?
Storyblok for marketing teams that want a visual page builder with real workflows and EU hosting on published plans, and Contentstack for teams that need approvals, SSO and an audit trail at a published entry price. DatoCMS is the closest like-for-like for small multilingual teams, Kontent.ai suits compliance buyers, Sanity suits developer-led teams, and Webflow removes the developer altogether.
Why are teams leaving Prismic?
Mostly the limits built into the product. Prismic has no content validation, only two workflow states, no audit log and no app framework. Data is stored only in the US, Prismic publishes no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 of its own, and multilingual sites hit an eight-locale cap even on the $675 a month Platinum plan.
Is Prismic good for multilingual websites?
Up to a point. Locales are capped per plan, from two on Free to eight on Platinum, and the ninth requires an Enterprise contract. DatoCMS supports more than 400 locales with field-level fallbacks, Kontent.ai translates element by element, and Strapi has no locale cap at all on its free open-source core.
What is the cheapest Prismic alternative?
Strapi is free open-source software on your own hosting. Among managed platforms, Sanity's free plan allows 20 seats, Webflow site plans start at $15 a month, Storyblok at $99, DatoCMS at €99 and Contentstack's Build plan at $29. None of them is as cheap as Prismic's $10 a month Starter plan, which is the price of staying.
How hard is it to migrate from Prismic to another CMS?
The content model is the easy part: slices map directly to components at Storyblok, DatoCMS, Agility CMS and Strapi, and the Migration API exports documents as JSON. The work is rewriting the front end queries, replacing imgix image URLs and rebuilding the preview. Plan a few weeks of developer time for a marketing site.
