Best Cosmic Alternatives in 2026
Cosmic gives a two-person team an AI-native headless CMS in an afternoon. The missing compliance file, the $99 a month add-ons and the thin ecosystem send growing teams elsewhere.
The short answer
Contentstack and Sanity are the strongest Cosmic alternatives in 2026. Contentstack adds SOC 2, 20-stage workflows and governed AI agents on plans from $29 a month; Sanity matches Cosmic's AI ambitions with two hosted MCP servers and Content Agent on a free plan. Storyblok gives marketers a visual editor, Contentful and Hygraph suit compliance-led buyers, DatoCMS and Prismic suit small budgets, and Strapi or Payload CMS suit open-source teams.
Key takeaways
- Compliance is the wall. Cosmic publishes no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or data processing agreement, offers no HIPAA agreement and states that it cannot complete custom security assessments. The first enterprise customer who sends a questionnaire usually starts this search.
- The list price is not the price. Webhooks, localization, revision history and automatic backups are each a $99 a month add-on, or $199 for the bundle, on top of a plan. Every alternative here includes at least three of the four in its base tiers.
- The Builder to Team jump is six times. The $49 a month plan stops at 5,000 objects and the next plan is $299. Compare the alternatives at the plan you will actually need, not the entry price.
- Cosmic's AI is genuinely ahead of most of this list. A hosted MCP server with 18 tools, scheduled Content Agents, Code Agents that open pull requests and native text, image and video generation are hard to replace. Sanity and Contentstack come closest.
- Export is easy, so the move is cheap. A bucket exports to a single file and Cosmic documents migration guides in both directions. The front end rewrite, not the content, is the cost of leaving.
Our picks at a glance
SOC 2, 20-stage workflows, governed agents from $29.
Visual editing, published prices, nothing to run.
Two MCP servers, Content Agent, free plan.
SOC 2 and EU, US or Asia-Pacific hosting.
Slices for editors from $10 a month.
Webhooks, locales and revisions included free.
Our analysts’ take
Cosmic is one of the fastest headless CMSs to get running and one of the most complete on AI agents. There are only three concepts to learn, Buckets, Object Types and Metafields, configuration needs three values, and cached API responses return in under 100 milliseconds. Its hosted MCP server exposes 18 tools, Content Agents run on a schedule or a webhook, Code Agents open GitHub pull requests, and native generation covers text, 4K images and video. Many Cosmic customers are teams of one or two, and the free tier with 1,000 objects is genuinely usable. Solo developers and small agencies shipping marketing sites should probably stay.
The teams that leave have hit one of three limits. The first is compliance: Cosmic publishes no SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001, no data processing agreement or sub-processor list, offers no HIPAA agreement, and states it lacks the capacity for custom security assessments. The second is price at scale: webhooks, localization, revision history and backups are $99 a month add-ons each or $199 bundled, the $49 Builder plan stops at 5,000 objects and the next plan is $299, and SAML SSO is Enterprise-only with four predefined roles below it. The third is the ecosystem: about six reviews on G2, fewer than 20 marketplace apps, few developers who list Cosmic experience, and no visual editing for marketers. Cosmic also moved customers through three API versions in a short window.
This guide rates nine destinations. Two are enterprise headless platforms that clear a security review and sell governance on published plans. One is the developer-led content platform that matches Cosmic on AI. Four are managed services for small and mid-sized marketing sites at published prices. Two are open-source platforms you host yourself. The ratings lean hardest on budget predictability, because add-ons and the plan cliff are why teams look, then on security and compliance, because that is what blocks the next customer, with AI third so the teams who chose Cosmic for it can see what they keep.
What to look for
- 1
Paperwork that survives a security review
Ask each vendor for the SOC 2 report, the ISO certificate and the data processing agreement in its own name, plus the sub-processor list. Contentstack, Contentful, Hygraph and Sanity hand them over; DatoCMS holds ISO 27001 only; Strapi and Payload CMS inherit whatever your hosting provides.
- 2
Table stakes in the base plan
Webhooks, revision history, localization and backups should not be add-ons. Check each plan table for the four, and for the roles count. Every pick here includes webhooks and revisions on paid plans; backups and audit logs are where several gate.
- 3
A plan ladder without a cliff
Find the plan you will need at three times your current objects and traffic, then compare that price, not the entry price. Storyblok, DatoCMS, Prismic and Hygraph publish every rung; Contentstack jumps from $29 to $299 between Build and Growth.
- 4
AI you can keep
If agents and generation are why you chose Cosmic, list what you use. Sanity and Contentstack match most of it, Hygraph and Strapi run MCP servers in general availability, and DatoCMS deliberately keeps AI out of the editor.
- 5
Someone to ask
Cosmic's community is small by its own numbers. Check the size of each vendor's Discord or Slack and how many agencies list the platform. Storyblok, Sanity, Contentful and Strapi have the deepest pools here.

The shortlist, reviewed
Contentstack
The enterprise headless platform that clears the security review Cosmic cannot. Workflows run to 20 stages, permissions reach field level, and Agent OS runs governed AI agents with every action logged. Build and Growth plans have published prices since October 2026, and webhooks, localization and versioning are included.
- Best for
- Teams whose first enterprise customer sent a security questionnaire and who want AI agents with governance behind them.
- Watch out for
- Standard plans carry only a 99.50 percent uptime commitment, health and payment data are prohibited by contract, and the jump from Build to Growth is $29 to $299.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month plus $25 per extra user; Enterprise quote-only. AI runs on metered credits.
Sanity
The developer's content platform and the closest match for Cosmic's AI ambitions. Two hosted MCP servers update almost weekly, Content Agent stages every edit as drafts for review and ships on the free plan, and official guides cover LangChain, the OpenAI Agents SDK and the Vercel AI SDK. Real-time co-editing is built in.
- Best for
- Developer-led teams building AI agents and content-rich products on Next.js who want a generous free tier with 20 seats.
- Watch out for
- SSO, custom roles and the audit trail are Enterprise-only, the Growth plan caps documents at 25,000, the SOC 2 report covers security only, and Sanity ships frequent breaking changes.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Growth at $15 per seat per month (viewers free), Enterprise quote-only. AI credits are published at $0.05 each.
Contentful
The enterprise reference headless CMS with the broadest compliance file in the group: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and audit logs streamed to your own storage within about five minutes. The remote MCP server reached general availability on July 21, 2026, and customers can choose among five AI model providers.
- Best for
- Teams moving from a startup site to an enterprise content program with the budget and the procurement process to match.
- Watch out for
- Only the $300 a month Lite plan is priced, SSO and custom roles are Enterprise-only, and Salesforce closed its acquisition on September 1, 2026 without an integration roadmap.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Lite at $300 per month; Premium and Enterprise quote-only. AI Actions are metered.
Storyblok
The headless CMS that gives marketers what Cosmic's form-based editor does not: a visual editor where they click components on the rendered page and rearrange them. Localization, versioning and webhooks are in the plan table, SCIM provisioning arrived in May 2026, and FlowMotion adds AI-driven workflow automation.
- Best for
- Marketing teams with a small development partner who want visual editing and a published plan ladder on a managed service.
- Watch out for
- SSO, GraphQL and the newest enterprise features sit on quote-only tiers, the jump from Growth to Growth Plus is steep, and Storyblok ships its own stream of breaking changes.
- What it costs
- Starter is free; Growth is $99 a month and Growth Plus $349 a month, with usage add-on packs. Premium and Elite are quote-only.
Hygraph
The GraphQL-native platform with a renewed SOC 2 Type 2 and a choice of EU, US or Asia-Pacific hosting on every plan. Every model generates a fully typed GraphQL API, Content Federation pulls remote sources into one graph, and the MCP server is generally available with deletes blocked by design.
- Best for
- Developer-led teams on Next.js, Nuxt or Astro who need a SOC 2 report and a hosting region without an Enterprise contract.
- Watch out for
- Scheduled publishing, custom workflows, custom roles and audit logs are Enterprise-only, and Enterprise runs from about $32,000 to $300,000 a year.
- What it costs
- Hobby is free; Growth from $199 per month with published limits and overage rates. Enterprise is published as a range of about $32,000 to $300,000 a year.
Prismic
The lowest-cost managed option for a marketing site and the nearest match for Cosmic's small-team simplicity. Developers build slices, editors arrange them in the Page Builder, and the TypeScript tooling gets a Next.js team to a working site in a day. The official MCP server is free on every plan.
- Best for
- Small teams on Next.js, Nuxt or SvelteKit who want a simple page builder for editors and a $10 a month starting price.
- Watch out for
- No content validation at all, only two workflow states, a US-only data region, no SOC 2 in Prismic's own name, and an eight-locale cap that pushes multilingual sites to Enterprise.
- What it costs
- Free plan; Starter $10, Small $25, Medium $150 and Platinum $675 a month, each with published user, API and bandwidth limits. Enterprise is custom.
Strapi
The most widely adopted open-source headless CMS, with the community Cosmic lacks: about 72,700 GitHub stars and 23,800 Discord members. The MIT-licensed core includes webhooks, localization, roles and revision history free, runs on your own PostgreSQL or MySQL, and the first-party MCP server reached general availability ahead of its peers.
- Best for
- Node.js and TypeScript teams who want Cosmic's add-ons included for free and will run the software or pay for Strapi Cloud.
- Watch out for
- No visual editor, no real-time collaboration and no personalization. Self-hosting means your team owns upgrades and security patching, and SOC 2 covers Strapi Cloud only.
- What it costs
- Free open-source core. Strapi Cloud plans are published with per-tier limits and overage rates; Enterprise is quote-only.
DatoCMS
A polished headless CMS with the best media pipeline here, Imgix images and Mux video included, and localization across more than 400 locales in the plan rather than as an add-on. Visual Editing landed on every plan, free included, in February 2026, and every tier publishes its limits and overage rates.
- Best for
- Small marketing and publishing teams with one developer who want structured content, strong media and a published European price.
- Watch out for
- Deliberately minimal built-in AI, EU-only hosting, no SOC 2 report in DatoCMS's own name, and SSO and audit logs are Enterprise features.
- What it costs
- Free developer plan, Professional at €99 per month, Scale at €199 per month, each with published limits and overage rates. Enterprise is quote-only.
Payload CMS
The open-source CMS for Next.js teams, backed by Figma since June 2025. Content models are TypeScript, a Local API runs inside the app alongside REST and GraphQL, and the MIT license holds nothing back: access control, versioning and localization ship free. An official MCP plugin exposes every collection to AI agents with your own model keys.
- Best for
- Engineering-led teams building custom Next.js products who want every Cosmic add-on included and no feature paywalls.
- Watch out for
- No managed hosting since Payload Cloud was discontinued, no compliance certifications, and marketers depend entirely on what developers build.
- What it costs
- Free open-source software with no paid feature tiers. Budget for your own hosting and a developer.
The three exits from Cosmic
Cosmic customers leave for one of three reasons, and each one points at a different shortlist. Name yours before you book demos.
A customer asked for the paperwork
No SOC 2, no ISO 27001, no data processing agreement and no capacity for custom assessments ends most enterprise deals. Contentstack, Contentful and Hygraph answer the questionnaire on published plans; Sanity's SOC 2 covers security only; DatoCMS holds ISO 27001.
The add-ons caught up with you
Webhooks, localization, revisions and backups at $99 a month each turn a $49 plan into a $248 one, and the next plan up is $299. Strapi and Payload CMS include all four free, Storyblok and DatoCMS put them in the plan table.
Your marketers want an editor
Form-based authoring with preview links is where Cosmic stops. Storyblok ships a visual editor as the product, DatoCMS added Visual Editing on every plan in February 2026, and Prismic's Page Builder lets editors arrange slices.
Questions to settle before you migrate
Which agents are you keeping?
List what you run on Cosmic: MCP tools, scheduled Content Agents, Code Agents, image or video generation. Sanity and Contentstack replace most of it, the others replace the MCP server only, and native video generation exists nowhere else here.
What is the real monthly bill today?
Add the plan, the add-ons, the per-user and per-bucket adders and the metered events. Compare each alternative at that number, not at Cosmic's $49 entry price.
Who answers the security questionnaire?
Ask each vendor for the exact documents your customer requested, in the vendor's own name. Contentstack, Contentful, Hygraph and Sanity have trust pages with downloads; with Strapi and Payload CMS you answer for your own hosting.
Can you leave the next one as easily?
Cosmic's single-file export set a high bar. Strapi and Payload CMS keep content in your database; the managed platforms export through their APIs. Export a sample from each trial, assets included.
Who owns upgrades on open source?
Strapi ships weekly and Payload CMS moves fast. If you self-host, someone owns the upgrade calendar and the security advisories. If nobody wants that, Strapi Cloud or a managed platform is the honest choice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Cosmic?
Contentstack for teams that need a SOC 2 report, approval workflows and governed AI agents on published plans, and Sanity for developer-led teams that want to keep building with AI agents on a generous free plan. Storyblok suits marketing teams that want a visual editor, Contentful and Hygraph suit compliance-led buyers, DatoCMS and Prismic suit small sites on a budget, and Strapi or Payload CMS suit open-source teams.
Why are teams leaving Cosmic?
Mostly compliance and price at scale. Cosmic publishes no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or data processing agreement and says it cannot complete custom security assessments, which ends enterprise deals. Webhooks, localization, revision history and backups are $99 a month add-ons each, the Builder plan stops at 5,000 objects, and the next plan costs six times as much.
Is Cosmic good for AI content workflows?
Yes, and that is the thing to weigh before leaving. Its hosted MCP server has 18 tools, Content Agents run on a schedule or a webhook, Code Agents open GitHub pull requests, and it generates text, 4K images and video natively. Sanity and Contentstack come closest; most of the others offer an MCP server and little more.
What is the cheapest Cosmic alternative?
Strapi and Payload CMS are free open-source software on your own hosting and include the features Cosmic sells as add-ons. Among managed platforms, Prismic starts at $10 a month, Contentstack's Build plan at $29, Storyblok at $99 and DatoCMS at €99, and Sanity's free plan allows 20 seats and commercial use.
How hard is it to migrate from Cosmic to another headless CMS?
The content is the easy part: a bucket exports to a single JSON file and Cosmic publishes migration guides in both directions. Object Types map to content types everywhere here. The work is rewriting the front end queries, reconnecting webhooks and rebuilding any agents. Plan one to three weeks of developer time for a marketing site.
