Best Directus Alternatives in 2026

Directus gave developers an instant API over their own database for free. Version 12 changed the license, switched on enforcement and put single sign-on behind a $499 a month plan. Teams are deciding whether to pay, fork or move.

DXP Scorecard Analyst TeamReviewed Ratings updated 11 min read

The short answer

Sanity and Contentstack are the strongest Directus alternatives in 2026. Sanity gives developer-led teams content as code, a hosted content store and a free tier with 20 seats; Contentstack supplies the single sign-on, custom roles and audit logs that Directus now sells at $499 a month, on published plans from $29. Storyblok suits marketing teams, and Payload CMS or Strapi keep the open-source, own-your-database model under an MIT license.

Key takeaways

  • The license is why most teams are looking. Version 12 moved Directus to the MSCL license in June 2026 and began enforcing it. After a 30-day grace period an unlicensed instance loses single sign-on, ignores custom permission rules and drops self-hosted AI models.
  • The free path is narrower than it looks. Organizations under $5 million in revenue and 50 employees qualify for the Open Innovation Grant. Everyone else chooses between a $99 a month Core Cloud plan capped at three seats and a $499 a month Team plan.
  • Security work was already a cost. 2026 brought an authorization bypass in uploads, a path traversal flaw in the file API, a single sign-on interception flaw rated 8.7 and a GraphQL denial-of-service issue, after a critical 9.3 flaw in 2025. Patching is manual, and version 12.1.0 removed API endpoints in a minor release.
  • Your data is already portable. Directus wraps PostgreSQL or MySQL tables you defined, so removing it leaves the database intact. Payload CMS and Strapi can sit on a similar database; the managed platforms import through their APIs.
  • Decide what you were really using. If Directus was a content store for a website, any platform here replaces it. If it was a product information backend or an application database with row-level permissions, only Hygraph, Sanity and the open-source pair come close.

Our picks at a glance

Our analysts’ take

Directus does something few CMSs attempt: it sits on top of a SQL database you already own and generates matching REST and GraphQL APIs from it. Its permissions work at the collection, field and row level, among the most detailed access control we rate, and its MCP server, the standard that lets AI agents work with a platform, scopes every agent to a role. Full-stack TypeScript teams building data-driven applications, product information teams feeding commerce channels, and startups that qualify for the Open Innovation Grant have little reason to leave.

The teams that are leaving point to one event. Version 12 reached general availability on June 15, 2026 with a redesigned Studio and native draft and publish states, and the same release swapped the BSL license for MSCL-1.0 with active enforcement. Single sign-on and custom permission rules now require the Team plan at $499 a month on an annual contract, or $599 monthly. SCIM and self-hosted AI models are Enterprise features, which third parties put near $15,000 a year. The community is described as noticeably split, some teams are forking, and migration specialists are advertising. Add a demanding version 11 to 12 upgrade, a run of 2026 security advisories, and no ISO 27001, HIPAA agreement or accessibility report for procurement, and the decision to re-evaluate makes itself.

This guide rates nine destinations. Two are open-source platforms under an MIT license that run on your own database, the closest match to what Directus was. Four are developer-led managed platforms with hosted content stores. Three are managed platforms built for marketing and small teams. The ratings lean hardest on budget predictability, because a license change is a budget event, then on low IT upkeep, because the patching calendar is the second thing Directus teams want to put down.

What to look for

  1. 1

A license that will not change on you

Directus went from BSL to an enforced source-available license in one release. Ask what the license is and what the vendor did the last time it changed. MIT is the only answer that removes the question.

  2. 2

Security features on the plan you can afford

Single sign-on, custom roles and audit logs are the features Directus now gates at $499 a month. Write down which plan carries each on every alternative; the answer ranges from free to Enterprise-only.

  3. 3

Who patches it and how often

Directus shipped weekly, including security fixes applied by hand. Decide whether to keep owning that calendar on Payload CMS or Strapi, or hand it to a managed vendor and accept their release schedule.

  4. 4

    Your database, or theirs

Directus leaves your content in SQL tables you defined. Only Payload CMS and Strapi keep that property. Every managed platform here stores content in its own system and exports it through an API, so test the export first.

  5. 5

Permissions as fine as you had

Row-level rules, field-level access and policies that add up are rare. Check whether the alternative can restrict a brand or a tenant to its own rows, or whether you need separate projects to get the same isolation.

The shortlist, reviewed

#1Contentstack logo

Contentstack

Headless CMS
6.9/10
Fit score

The enterprise headless platform that sells governance by the plan, not the license. Permissions reach the field level, up to five SAML identity providers connect, workflows run to 20 stages, and Agent OS runs governed AI agents with every action logged. No vendor security advisory is on record.

Best for
Organizations that need single sign-on, custom roles and audit logs now and want a published entry price and a vendor that handles patching.
Watch out for
No commerce or forms of its own, protected health and payment card data are prohibited by contract, and standard plans carry a 99.50 percent uptime commitment with higher levels sold as add-ons.
What it costs
Free plan, Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month plus $25 per extra user; Enterprise quote-only. AI runs on metered credits.

#2Sanity logo

Sanity

Headless CMS
6.8/10
Fit score

The developer content platform with the deepest modeling here and nothing to host. Content models are TypeScript, Portable Text stores rich text as structured data, and the content store, image pipeline and Studio hosting are bundled. Two official MCP servers update almost weekly.

Best for
Developer-led teams that liked the Directus data model but want a hosted content store, a free tier and no servers to patch.
Watch out for
Single sign-on, custom roles, the audit trail and the uptime guarantee are Enterprise-only. The SOC 2 report covers security only, a 2026 Portable Text bug lost data, and breaking changes arrive on the vendor's schedule.
What it costs
Free plan, Growth at $15 per seat per month (viewers free), Enterprise quote-only. AI credits are published at $0.05 each.

#3Storyblok logo

Storyblok

Headless CMS
6.8/10
Fit score

The managed headless CMS for teams whose Directus instance was really a website backend. Marketers click components on the rendered page and rearrange them, FlowMotion automates workflows with approval routing, and SCIM 2.0 provisioning arrived in May 2026.

Best for
Marketing teams with a development partner who want a visual editor and published prices instead of a database to administer.
Watch out for
Single sign-on and the newer enterprise features are quote-only, releases often reach enterprise plans first, and the vendor has a habit of forced platform changes.
What it costs
Starter is free; Growth is $99 a month and Growth Plus $349 a month, with usage add-on packs. Premium and Elite are quote-only.

#4Contentful logo

Contentful

Headless CMS
6.6/10
Fit score

The reference enterprise headless CMS and the best compliance story here. It holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022, streams audit and API logs to your own cloud storage within about five minutes, and its remote MCP server became generally available on July 21, 2026.

Best for
Enterprises leaving Directus over procurement gaps who need ISO 27001, streamed audit logs and EU residency from one vendor.
Watch out for
Only the $300 a month Lite plan is published; single sign-on, custom roles and workflows need an Enterprise contract. Salesforce closed its acquisition on September 1, 2026 with no integration roadmap published.
What it costs
Free plan, Lite at $300 per month; Premium and Enterprise quote-only. AI Actions are metered.

#5Hygraph logo

Hygraph

Headless CMS
6.5/10
Fit score

The closest managed match for Directus as a data layer. Every model generates a typed GraphQL API, Content Federation pulls remote REST and GraphQL sources into one graph, Hobby and Growth projects can be hosted in the EU, US or Asia-Pacific, and the MCP server is generally available.

Best for
Developer-led teams that used Directus to unify several data sources and want one typed API with no server to run.
Watch out for
Scheduled publishing, custom workflows, custom roles and audit logs are all Enterprise-only, and Enterprise runs from about $32,000 to $300,000 a year. There is no accessibility statement.
What it costs
Hobby is free; Growth from $199 per month with published limits and overage rates. Enterprise is published as a range of about $32,000 to $300,000 a year.

#6DatoCMS logo

DatoCMS

Headless CMS
6.4/10
Fit score

A polished managed CMS with the best media pipeline in this group. Images transform on the fly through Imgix, Mux video is on in every project, localization covers more than 400 locales with fallback chains, and Visual Editing arrived in February 2026.

Best for
Small content and marketing teams with a developer who want structured content, first-rate images and video and European pricing with published limits.
Watch out for
No SOC 2 report of its own, EU-only hosting, one project per site with no content sharing, and deliberately minimal native AI.

#7Payload CMS logo

Payload CMS

Headless CMS
6.3/10
Fit score

The open-source CMS that holds nothing back. The MIT core ships access control, roles, versioning, localization and three APIs free, content models are TypeScript, and the Local API runs inside a Next.js app. Figma has backed it since June 2025; content lives in Postgres or MongoDB.

Best for
Engineering-led Next.js and TypeScript teams that want the own-your-database model Directus had, under a license that cannot be enforced against them.
Watch out for
No managed hosting since Payload Cloud was discontinued, no compliance certifications, visual editing and multi-stage workflows sit in the enterprise tier, and a version 4 transition is in beta.
What it costs
Free open-source software with no paid feature tiers. Budget for your own hosting and a developer.

#8Strapi logo

Strapi

Headless CMS
6.3/10
Fit score

The most widely adopted open-source headless CMS and the destination migration specialists advertise. The MIT core runs on PostgreSQL, MySQL or MariaDB, the Plugin SDK leads its class, the built-in MCP server is free when self-hosted, and Data Import, Export and Transfer is free.

Best for
Developer-led teams that want to keep self-hosting on their own database with the largest community and plugin ecosystem in open-source headless.
Watch out for
Single sign-on is an add-on at $150 a month plus $50 per seat, Review Workflows and Audit Logs are Enterprise-only, and five vulnerabilities were disclosed in May 2026, so self-hosters keep the patching calendar they have today.
What it costs
Free open-source core. Strapi Cloud starts at $35 a month per project and the Growth CMS license at $45 a month plus $15 per seat, with every limit and overage rate published; Enterprise is quote-only.

An AI-native managed CMS for small teams. A hosted MCP server exposes 18 tools, four agent types run content and code tasks on a schedule or a webhook, and text, image and video generation are native. A React developer can ship within hours.

Best for
Startups and small agencies running AI-driven content pipelines who want a hosted service with agents built in.
Watch out for
No SOC 2 or ISO 27001, only four fixed roles with single sign-on on Enterprise only, and webhooks, localization and revision history are $99 a month add-ons each.

The three exits from Directus

Teams leave Directus for different reasons, and each reason points at a different shortlist. Name yours before you compare features.

The license exit

You want the same model, an API over a database you own, without a license that can be enforced against you. Payload CMS and Strapi are both MIT. Payload gates nothing; Strapi charges for single sign-on and audit logs but publishes every price.

The operations exit

You are tired of weekly releases, manual security patches and a major upgrade that changed proxy and health-check setup. Sanity, Hygraph, Contentstack and DatoCMS patch themselves. The trade is that your content moves into their store.

The procurement exit

Security asked for ISO 27001, a HIPAA agreement or an accessibility report and Directus has none of them. Contentful and DatoCMS hold ISO 27001, Contentful streams audit logs, and Contentstack logs every agent action. None of the nine offers a HIPAA agreement.

Questions to settle before you migrate

Do you qualify for the grant?

Under $5 million in revenue and 50 employees, the Open Innovation Grant gives you the full platform free, single sign-on included. If you qualify, the migration case is weaker than the forum threads suggest. If you are about to cross either line, plan for the Team plan or a move.

What were the custom permission rules doing?

List every policy that filters rows by brand, tenant or region. On Payload CMS and Strapi you rebuild them in code. On the managed platforms you may need separate projects to get the same isolation, which changes the price.

Which integrations read the database directly?

Directus lets other systems query the same SQL tables; a managed platform ends that. Inventory the reports, data jobs and product feeds that bypass the API today and budget to rewrite them.

Who owns the next upgrade?

Payload CMS and Strapi keep you on an upgrade calendar: Payload has a version 4 in beta, Strapi ships weekly. If nobody on the team wants that job, a managed platform is the honest answer even if it costs more.

What does the export look like?

Leaving Directus is easy because the data is already yours. Make sure the next move is as easy. Export a sample from each trial, with assets, localized fields and relations, before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Directus?

Sanity for developer-led teams that want content as code on a hosted store with a free tier, and Contentstack for organizations that need single sign-on, custom roles and audit logs on a published plan. Payload CMS and Strapi keep content in your own database under an MIT license, and Storyblok suits marketing teams that want a visual editor.

Why are teams leaving Directus in 2026?

Version 12, released in June 2026, moved Directus to the MSCL license and switched on enforcement. After a 30-day grace period an unlicensed instance loses single sign-on and ignores custom permission rules, which now require the $499 a month Team plan. Frequent security advisories, a demanding upgrade and no ISO 27001 add to the case.

Is Directus still free to use?

Partly. The self-hosted Core edition is free under the MSCL license, and organizations under $5 million in revenue and 50 employees can use the full platform free through the Open Innovation Grant. Above those thresholds, single sign-on and custom permission rules need the Team plan at $499 a month on an annual contract, or $599 monthly.

What is the closest open-source alternative to Directus?

Payload CMS and Strapi. Both are MIT licensed and store content in a database you own, the property Directus users value most. Payload ships every feature free, including roles, versioning and localization. Strapi has the larger community and a free import and export tool, but charges for single sign-on and audit logs.

How hard is it to migrate from Directus?

Easier than most migrations, because Directus stores content in standard PostgreSQL or MySQL tables and the schema exports as a snapshot. Payload CMS and Strapi can run on a similar database after remodeling; Sanity, Contentstack and Hygraph import through their management APIs. The longer work is rebuilding custom permission rules, Flows automations and any system that read the database directly.
