A true data-driven, real-world breakdown of Optimizely SaaS CMS vs Acquia from the implementation experts who build it.
Reviewed October 2026 · 184 criteria · 10 categories · View methodology →
Both brands use a similar color, so Acquia is shown in a contrasting accent on this page.
Choose Optimizely SaaS CMS if you want a fully managed headless CMS with governed AI agents and Optimizely's experimentation suite within reach. Choose Acquia if you already run Drupal, manage dozens of sites, or need FedRAMP Moderate authorization for US government work and a first-party asset library. Both are quote only for enterprise use and sell marketing features as separate products. The choice depends on whether your team works in JavaScript or Drupal, and how heavily procurement weighs public-sector compliance.
A high-level view of how the two platforms compare across key areas.
| Area | Optimizely SaaS CMS | Acquia |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery model | Fully managed multi-tenant SaaS on Azure that does not render pages; Optimizely can host your Next.js or Astro front end. | Managed Drupal hosting on AWS with Dev, Stage and Prod environments, plus a SaaS edition and open-source Drupal as an exit. |
| Developer model | A TypeScript SDK and GraphQL delivery suit generalist JavaScript developers, though the SDK broke compatibility three times in 2026. | Requires Drupal specialists in PHP, Twig and configuration management; enterprise builds typically need three to eight people. |
| AI agents | A production agent platform with guardrails, output evaluations, usage dashboards and agents triggered by content events. | Acquia AI is an Early Access release with no service level agreement, and its single agent works only in a sandbox. |
| Compliance | ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2 and a HIPAA variant, but no FedRAMP and no published accessibility conformance report. | FedRAMP Moderate, PCI DSS Level 1, signed HIPAA agreements and a published accessibility conformance report (VPAT). |
| Multi-site and assets | Several sites share content types and assets in one instance, with no formal syndication workflow and no video transcoding. | Site Factory runs portfolios of 400+ sites, Content Hub syndicates with local overrides, and Acquia DAM streams video with captions. |
| SEO and campaigns | No sitemap, redirect manager or automation in the CMS; email and journeys need the separately licensed Optimizely Campaign. | Drupal's SEO recipe ships sitemaps and redirects; Campaign Studio adds journeys and lead scoring under a separate license. |
Neither vendor publishes enterprise prices. Optimizely SaaS CMS is quote only, with every plan individually packaged. Buyer reports put the median contract near $78K a year, driven by traffic, API calls, product mix and AI credits. Acquia lists only its Professional line, at $148 to $364 a month. Its enterprise Cloud Platform tiers, DAM, Site Factory and Content Hub all need a sales call, and enterprise budgets commonly start above $100K a year before add-ons.
Beyond the license, the cost profiles differ. Optimizely bundles hosting, upgrades and patching. Implementation typically takes 30 to 50 percent of first-year budget, and front-end teams should plan for regular SDK upgrades. Contracts auto-renew with as little as 30 days' notice. Acquia also bundles hosting, but views and visits overages bill at $100 per block, and bot traffic can inflate them. Drupal specialists cost more than general web developers, and module updates and the Drupal 11 upgrade stay with your team.
Over several years Optimizely SaaS CMS usually needs fewer people to run. Acquia's cost grows with each added product and the Drupal team behind it. Price the full stack on both, not the CMS line.
Optimizely SaaS CMS is multi-tenant SaaS on Azure with no self-hosted option. It does not render pages: your team builds a Next.js or Astro front end on the TypeScript SDK and Optimizely Graph, its GraphQL delivery layer, and Optimizely can host that front end under the CMS service level agreement. Two or three front-end developers can ship a production site, and there is no server code or module tree to maintain. The trade-off is churn. The SDK went through three breaking major versions between February and September 2026, and the old Preview3 API was retired under three months after its replacement went live.
Acquia renders and hosts the whole Drupal site on AWS, with a 99.95% uptime commitment on the Enterprise tier and a one-hour recovery point objective. That full control comes with Drupal's learning curve: entities, render arrays, Twig and hundreds of YAML configuration files. Enterprise builds typically need three to eight people. Acquia patches the platform layer, but your team owns Composer updates across 30 to 80 contributed modules, and Drupal 10 support ends December 9, 2026.
Both give marketers a visual builder. Optimizely's Visual Builder composes pages from sections, rows and elements on your own front end, reuses blueprints, and since September 2026 supports several layouts per page. Acquia offers Drupal Canvas, the default drag-and-drop builder since Drupal CMS 2.0, with live preview. Optimizely's edge is testing and targeting: Feature Experimentation maps test variations to CMS content, and Optimizely is a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Personalization Engines. Acquia Personalization reached end of life in January 2026, and its replacement is Wingify's VWO engine delivered through a client-side snippet.
Acquia is stronger on the surrounding toolset. Drupal's SEO recipe ships metatags, redirects and XML sitemaps, which Optimizely leaves to developers. Acquia DAM adds license-expiry enforcement, brand portals and video streaming with captions, while Optimizely has no video pipeline. For multi-brand programs, Site Factory and Content Hub syndicate corporate content to brand sites with local overrides. On both platforms, email and marketing automation are separate licenses: Optimizely Campaign or Acquia Campaign Studio.
This is the widest gap between the two. Optimizely Agent Platform (formerly Opal) runs agents and Virtual Teammates that write, translate, audit and publish content. Webhooks can start agents on content events, and a WCAG Compliance Auditor agent applies accessibility fixes on approval. Admins write natural-language input guardrails, score runs with output evaluations, and track credit spend on a usage dashboard. A CMS MCP server (Model Context Protocol, the standard that lets AI assistants act on a system) has been available since June 2026.
Acquia AI is an Early Access release with no service level agreement. Its single Site Builder agent works only in a sandbox, custom agents are not available, and customer-facing audit trails are out of scope. Acquia's practical AI today is the Conductor Writing Assistant, DAM alt text and tagging, and official MCP servers for Source CMS, DAM and Web Governance. Drupal's AI framework can route requests to the buyer's own provider, which suits teams with an existing model contract.
These are different vendors with different architectures, so a move either way is a replatform, not an upgrade. Going from Optimizely SaaS CMS to Acquia means rebuilding content types as Drupal entities and fields, switching from GraphQL to JSON:API or Drupal theming, and replacing Optimizely experimentation with Acquia's partner engines. Optimizely exports content types as a JSON manifest and content as a data package, which helps script the move.
Going from Acquia to Optimizely means rebuilding the front end in JavaScript and dropping Drupal's server-side customizations, since Optimizely runs no custom server code. Drupal content is portable through the Migrate API and JSON:API, and Acquia commits to returning customer data within seven days of a termination request. Site Factory portfolios and sites that depend on FedRAMP should stay put. So should member portals that rely on visitor login, because Optimizely has no visitor identity layer.

No. Optimizely SaaS CMS is a separate, fully managed headless product. The PaaS line (CMS 12 and 13) runs your own .NET code and installs server add-ons, while the SaaS CMS runs no custom server code, so many marketplace add-ons work only on PaaS. The content model feels familiar to PaaS teams, and the SaaS edition removes version upgrade projects.
Acquia is the safer choice for the US public sector: FedRAMP Moderate authorization with 26 agency authorizations, PCI DSS Level 1 validation, signed HIPAA agreements and a published accessibility conformance report. Optimizely SaaS CMS also suits healthcare, with ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2 and a HIPAA-enabled variant under a business associate agreement, but it has no FedRAMP authorization.
In September 2026 Acquia dropped the DXP label and rebranded as an agentic content platform built around Acquia Source and Acquia AI. Drupal hosting, Site Factory and Acquia DAM continue. Personalization, experimentation and search now come from partner engines sold as add-ons, such as Wingify for conversion optimization and SearchStax for search.
Yes, for any serious build. Production Drupal sites need PHP, Twig and configuration management skills, and Acquia maintains four certification tracks. Acquia Source and Drupal Canvas reduce the work for simpler sites, and Canvas adapters for Next.js and Astro exist but are still pre-1.0. Optimizely SaaS CMS, by contrast, is built for generalist TypeScript developers.
Acquia. Its partner network has more than 800 agencies, including Capgemini and Havas CX. Acquia Exchange lists over 200 integrations, and Drupal.org adds tens of thousands of modules. Optimizely's app directory is large too, but much of it targets the PaaS edition. Its SaaS developer community is still small, and its forums are not staffed by Optimizely.
Optimizely SaaS CMS and Acquia are level on overall suite capability (67 vs 67). Optimizely SaaS CMS wins 4 of the 10 scoring categories and Acquia wins 4, with 2 too close to call.
