Best Strapi Alternatives in 2026
Strapi is the open-source headless CMS most developers reach for first. Its 2026 price changes, enterprise-only governance and a self-hosting burden that never goes away are why many of them are now reaching for something else.
The short answer
Storyblok and Sanity are the strongest Strapi alternatives in 2026. Storyblok gives marketers the visual editor Strapi never had, on published plans from $99 a month with hosting included; Sanity gives developer-led teams content as code, a hosted store and a free tier of 20 seats. Contentstack is the enterprise choice for governance, DatoCMS and Prismic suit small teams on a budget, and Payload CMS or Directus keep the self-hosted model.
Key takeaways
- The free Strapi Cloud plan ended on September 1, 2026, and the managed path got more expensive: the entry plan nearly doubled to $35 a month and still sleeps when idle, so an always-on production project starts near $90 a month plus a $45 CMS license.
- Governance is where Strapi charges. Single sign-on is an add-on at $150 a month plus $50 per seat, Review Workflows and Audit Logs are Enterprise-only, and Content History on the Growth plan is capped at 14 days.
- Self-hosting means owning security. Strapi disclosed five vulnerabilities in May 2026, two of them rated above 9, and ships weekly, so somebody applies patches every week. Version 4 is also out of support, which forces the breaking move to version 5.
- Marketers never got an editor. There is no visual page builder, no co-editing and no conflict detection; when two people edit at once, the last save wins. Storyblok, Prismic and DatoCMS ship visual editing.
- Your content moves. Strapi's Data Import, Export and Transfer is free and produces readable JSON, and the database is yours. The work is in the front end's queries and the plugins, not the content.
Our picks at a glance
Visual editing, published prices, nothing to run.
Content as code, co-editing, free tier.
Workflows and audit logs from $29 a month.
One typed API over several sources.
Slices for editors from $10 a month.
MIT license, no feature add-ons.
Our analysts’ take
Strapi is the adoption leader in open-source headless CMS, with about 72,700 GitHub stars and roughly 100,000 weekly downloads, two to three times Payload CMS or Directus. Version 5 is fully TypeScript over standard REST and GraphQL, the Plugin SDK is the best in its class, and the built-in MCP server, the standard that lets AI agents work with a platform, reached general availability ahead of its peers. Self-hosting runs about $10 to $25 a month, and the MIT core ships unlimited seats, locales and both APIs. Developer-led teams happy to run their own instance should stay.
The teams that leave point to three things. The first is money on the managed path: the free Strapi Cloud plan was withdrawn on September 1, 2026, the Starter plan rose to $35 a month per project and still sleeps when idle, hosting and the CMS license are separate purchases, and single sign-on costs $150 a month plus $50 per seat on top of a $45 a month Growth license. The second is governance: Review Workflows and Audit Logs need an Enterprise contract paid by wire transfer. The third is the self-hosting burden: a weekly release train, five vulnerabilities disclosed in May 2026 including a critical admin takeover flaw, version 4 out of support, and no built-in monitoring, CDN or uptime guarantee. Add a form-based editor with no visual building or co-editing, and the marketing team starts asking too.
This guide rates nine destinations. Three are managed platforms built for marketing sites with visual editing. Two are developer-led managed platforms with hosted content stores. Two are enterprise headless platforms with governance built in. Two are open-source platforms for teams that want to keep self-hosting. The ratings weigh budget predictability and marketer self-service equally, because Strapi teams leave over price and over an editor marketers cannot use, then low IT upkeep, because the patching calendar is what they want to put down.
What to look for
- 1
One bill, not two
Strapi now sells hosting and the CMS license separately, with four usage meters on top. Ask each vendor for one price that includes hosting, delivery and the features you use, and for the price at double today's traffic.
- 2
Governance on the plan you can afford
Single sign-on, workflows and audit logs are where Strapi charges most. Write down which plan carries each on every alternative. Open source puts some of them in the free core; managed platforms range from $29 a month to Enterprise-only.
- 3
An editor marketers can use alone
Have your editors build a landing page in each trial without a developer. Visual editors that show the rendered page pass. A structured form with a preview pane is what you have today.
- 4
Who patches it
Strapi ships weekly and you apply the patches. Decide whether you want to keep that job on Payload CMS or Directus, or hand it to a managed vendor and accept their release schedule and their uptime commitment instead.
- 5
Content that comes back out
Strapi's export is free and readable. Make sure the next platform's is too. Export a sample with components, dynamic zones and a localized entry from each trial and check what comes back.

The shortlist, reviewed
Contentstack
The enterprise headless platform that sells the governance Strapi reserves for Enterprise, on a published plan. Workflows run to 20 stages, publish rules gate releases by branch, language and environment, permissions reach the field level, and Agent OS runs governed AI agents with every action logged.
- Best for
- Organizations that need review workflows, audit logs and single sign-on now and want a vendor that handles patching.
- Watch out for
- No commerce or forms of its own, protected health and payment card data are prohibited by contract, and standard plans carry a 99.50 percent uptime commitment.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month plus $25 per extra user; Enterprise quote-only. AI runs on metered credits.
Storyblok
The headless CMS that fixes Strapi's editor problem. Marketers click components on the rendered page and rearrange them, nestable structured content holds a Strapi-grade model, FlowMotion automates workflows with approval routing, and hosting, delivery and assets are bundled. SCIM 2.0 provisioning arrived in May 2026.
- Best for
- Marketing teams with a development partner who want a visual editor and published mid-tier prices with nothing to run.
- Watch out for
- Single sign-on and the newer enterprise features are quote-only, releases often reach enterprise plans first, and the vendor has a record of forced platform changes.
- What it costs
- Starter is free; Growth is $99 a month and Growth Plus $349 a month, with usage add-on packs. Premium and Elite are quote-only.
Sanity
The developer platform with the deepest content modeling here and nothing to host. Content models are TypeScript, Portable Text stores rich text as structured data, real-time collaborative editing is built in, and the content store, image pipeline and Studio hosting are bundled.
- Best for
- Developer-led Node.js and TypeScript teams that want to keep content as code and stop running servers, with a free tier of 20 seats.
- Watch out for
- Single sign-on, custom roles, the audit trail and the uptime guarantee are Enterprise-only, the SOC 2 report covers security only, and a 2026 Portable Text bug lost data.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Growth at $15 per seat per month (viewers free), Enterprise quote-only. AI credits are published at $0.05 each.
Contentful
The reference enterprise headless CMS with the deepest compliance file here: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, and audit and API logs streamed to your own cloud storage. Four purpose-built APIs reach every channel, and the remote MCP server went generally available in July 2026.
- Best for
- Global enterprises running many locales who need ISO 27001 and streamed audit logs and have a developer team for the front end.
- Watch out for
- Only the $300 a month Lite plan is published; single sign-on, custom roles and workflows need an Enterprise contract. Salesforce closed its acquisition on September 1, 2026 without a published roadmap.
- What it costs
- Free plan, Lite at $300 per month; Premium and Enterprise quote-only. AI Actions are metered.
DatoCMS
A polished managed CMS with the best media pipeline in this group. Images transform on the fly through Imgix, Mux video is on in every project, localization covers more than 400 locales with fallback chains, and Visual Editing arrived in February 2026.
- Best for
- Small marketing and content teams with a developer who want structured content, first-rate media and European pricing with published limits.
- Watch out for
- No SOC 2 report of its own, EU-only hosting, one project per site with no content sharing, and deliberately minimal native AI.
- What it costs
- Free developer plan, Professional at €99 per month, Scale at €199 per month, each with published limits and overage rates. Enterprise is quote-only.
Prismic
The lowest-cost managed option for a marketing site. Developers build slices, editors arrange them in the Page Builder with live preview, Slice Machine generates TypeScript types on every model change, and the Next.js, Nuxt and SvelteKit starters reach a working query in under an hour.
- Best for
- Small teams on a modern JavaScript framework who want a simple page builder for editors at a price below Strapi Cloud.
- Watch out for
- No content validation at all, only two workflow states, US-only data residency on every plan, and an eight-locale cap that pushes multilingual sites to Enterprise.
- What it costs
- Free plan; Starter $10, Small $25, Medium $150 and Platinum $675 a month, each with published user, API and bandwidth limits. Enterprise is custom.
Hygraph
The GraphQL-native platform for teams that used Strapi as a data layer. Every model generates a typed GraphQL API, Content Federation pulls remote REST and GraphQL sources into one graph, projects can be hosted in the EU, US or Asia-Pacific, and the MCP server is generally available.
- Best for
- Developer-led teams building Next.js, Nuxt or Astro sites who want one typed API over several sources with nothing to patch.
- Watch out for
- Scheduled publishing, custom workflows, custom roles and audit logs are Enterprise-only, and Enterprise runs from about $32,000 to $300,000 a year. There is no accessibility statement.
- What it costs
- Hobby is free; Growth from $199 per month with published limits and overage rates. Enterprise is published as a range of about $32,000 to $300,000 a year.
Payload CMS
The open-source CMS that gates nothing. The MIT core ships access control, roles, versioning, localization and three APIs free, so the features Strapi sells as add-ons cost nothing. Content models are TypeScript, the Local API runs inside a Next.js app, and Figma has backed it since June 2025.
- Best for
- Engineering-led Next.js and TypeScript teams that want to keep self-hosting without paying for single sign-on or audit history.
- Watch out for
- No managed hosting since Payload Cloud was discontinued, no compliance certifications, visual editing and multi-stage workflows sit in the enterprise tier, and a version 4 transition is in beta.
- What it costs
- Free open-source software with no paid feature tiers. Budget for your own hosting and a developer.
Directus
An API over a SQL database you already own, with permissions at the collection, field and row level and an MCP server that scopes every agent to a role. Version 12, released June 15, 2026, added a redesigned Studio and native draft and publish states.
- Best for
- Full-stack teams building data-driven applications who want fine-grained permissions and a managed hosting option from the vendor.
- Watch out for
- Version 12 moved to the enforced MSCL license: single sign-on and custom permission rules need the $499 a month Team plan unless you qualify for the startup grant, and 2026 brought several security advisories.
- What it costs
- Free self-hosted Core under the MSCL license; Core Cloud at $99 a month, Team at $499 a month on an annual contract ($599 monthly), Enterprise quote-only.
The three exits from Strapi
Teams leave Strapi for different reasons, and each reason points at a different shortlist. Name yours before the feature comparison starts.
The editor exit
Your marketers want to build pages and see them as they build. Storyblok, Prismic and DatoCMS ship visual editing on published plans; Storyblok is the deepest of the three. Sanity and Hygraph give marketers whatever developers build for them.
The operations exit
You are tired of weekly patches, a CDN you had to add and a database you back up yourself. Every managed platform here ends that. The trade is that your content moves into the vendor's store and the bill becomes a subscription.
The price-of-governance exit
You need single sign-on, audit logs and review workflows without an Enterprise contract. Payload CMS ships roles and version history free. Contentstack publishes a $299 a month plan with workflows. Sanity, Hygraph and Contentful put most of it in Enterprise, so compare carefully.
Questions to settle before you migrate
Which plugins are you really using?
Strapi's marketplace leads open-source headless, and custom plugins are common. List every plugin and lifecycle hook in production. Each one is a built-in feature on the new platform, an app from its marketplace, or code you rewrite.
What does the bill include?
A Strapi Cloud quote has two lines and four meters. Ask each alternative for one price that covers hosting, delivery, the seats you have and the features you use, and what the overage rates are. Prismic, Hygraph, Sanity and DatoCMS publish all of it.
Which governance features are mandatory?
Write down whether you need single sign-on, audit logs and approval workflows on day one. Then confirm in writing which plan carries each on your shortlist; the Enterprise-only list differs widely across these nine.
Does the content model fit?
Components, dynamic zones and the Blocks editor map to blocks and nestable components on every platform here. Export a sample with Strapi's free transfer tool and import it into each trial. Check relations, localized fields and media.
Who owns upgrades if you stay open source?
Payload CMS has a version 4 in beta and Directus just changed its license. Both keep you on an upgrade calendar. If nobody on the team wants that job, a managed platform is the honest answer even when it costs more.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Strapi?
Storyblok for marketing teams that want a visual editor on published plans with hosting included, and Sanity for developer-led teams that want content as code on a hosted store with a free tier. Contentstack suits enterprises that need workflows and audit logs, DatoCMS and Prismic suit small teams on a budget, and Payload CMS or Directus keep the self-hosted model.
Why are teams leaving Strapi in 2026?
Price and governance on the managed path, and operations on the self-hosted one. The free Strapi Cloud plan ended on September 1, 2026, the entry plan rose to $35 a month, and single sign-on now costs $150 a month plus $50 per seat. Review Workflows and Audit Logs are Enterprise-only. Self-hosters apply weekly patches, including five vulnerabilities disclosed in May 2026, and version 4 is out of support.
Is Strapi still free?
The Community edition is, permanently. It is MIT licensed and ships unlimited seats, content types and locales, role-based access control, both APIs and the Blocks editor, and self-hosting runs about $10 to $25 a month. What is no longer free is managed Strapi Cloud, whose free plan was withdrawn in September 2026, and features such as single sign-on, audit logs and review workflows.
What is the closest open-source alternative to Strapi?
Payload CMS. It is MIT licensed, runs on Postgres or MongoDB, defines content models in TypeScript and ships every feature free, including the access control and version history Strapi charges for. Directus is the other option, an API over your own SQL database with fine-grained permissions, though its 2026 relicensing put single sign-on behind a $499 a month plan.
How hard is it to migrate from Strapi to another headless CMS?
The content is the easy part. Strapi's Data Import, Export and Transfer is free and produces readable JSON, and every platform here has a management API or importer. The work is rewriting the front end's queries, rebuilding custom plugins and lifecycle hooks, and mapping components and dynamic zones to the new platform's blocks. Plan a few weeks of developer time for a marketing site.
