Best Squiz DXP Alternatives in 2026

Squiz DXP gives public sector and university web teams enterprise search, a real page builder and nothing to patch. It also meters page views, prices every capability separately and asks developers to learn an asset tree nobody else uses.

DXP Scorecard Analyst TeamReviewed Ratings updated 11 min read

The short answer

Contentstack and Storyblok are the strongest Squiz DXP alternatives in 2026. Contentstack gives public sector content teams 20-stage workflows, governed AI and published entry prices with nothing to run. Storyblok keeps the drag-and-drop page building Squiz editors rely on, from $99 a month. Acquia and Drupal CMS are the natural picks for university and government site fleets, Umbraco and Xperience by Kentico suit .NET teams, WordPress VIP brings FedRAMP, and Liferay covers portals.

Key takeaways

  • The bill is why teams look. Squiz publishes no prices, the subscription meters page views, indexed documents, storage and data transfer with overage charges, unused allowance is forfeited, and the agreement lets Squiz reprice at renewal. Most alternatives here publish a price or run on software with no license at all.
  • Procurement will notice the paperwork. Squiz's SOC 2 report is Type 1 only, there is no hosting in the EU, HIPAA is disclaimed, and no accessibility conformance report can be retrieved for any product. For the government and university buyers Squiz targets, several alternatives have a cleaner file.
  • The talent pool is the hidden cost. Matrix treats everything as an asset in a tree, with Designs, Paint Layouts and Contexts no other platform uses, and the specialists sit in Australian and UK agencies. Drupal and WordPress developers are everywhere.
  • Search is the thing you will miss. Funnelback indexes SharePoint, Google Drive and Jira with permission-aware results and conversational answers, and no CMS on this list matches it. Budget for a search product alongside whichever CMS you choose.
  • Keep what works: a page builder editors use without tickets, managed hosting, and hundreds of sites under one component library. Nothing here keeps all three at Squiz's level of integration, so decide which two matter.

Our picks at a glance

Our analysts’ take

Squiz DXP is built for a few sectors and serves them well. Funnelback, sold as DXP Search, is a 25-year-old enterprise search engine with more than 70 ranking factors and permission-aware results across SharePoint, Google Drive and Jira. The Visual Page Builder lets editors assemble and personalize pages by segment without a developer, Component Service governs brand-approved components across hundreds of sites, and as managed SaaS on AWS the platform patches and scales itself under a support agreement with published resolution targets. Government, higher education and utilities in Australia, New Zealand and the UK that lean on search and run large estates have reason to stay.

The teams that leave share four complaints. The first is cost: there is no public rate card, free tier or trial, the subscription meters page views, indexed documents, storage and data transfer with overage charges, unused allowance is forfeited, and Squiz may reprice at renewal. Every capability beyond core publishing is a separate line on a 15-item menu. The second is the build: Matrix's asset tree and Paint Layouts are unlike standard web development, there are no starter projects for Next.js or Nuxt, and specialists are concentrated in Australian and UK agencies. The third is paperwork: a SOC 2 report that is Type 1 only, no EU hosting, no HIPAA, and no accessibility conformance report anyone can download. The fourth is AI: no MCP server, no bring-your-own model, and an agent product still in early access.

This guide rates nine destinations. Three are Drupal, managed and free, because that is where public sector and university estates commonly land. One is enterprise WordPress with federal authorization. Two are .NET platforms, one free and one with a marketing suite. One is a Java portal platform for logged-in services. Two are managed headless platforms. The ratings lean on budget predictability and compliance, because those are why teams leave, then on marketer self-service and low upkeep, because those are what Squiz did well.

What to look for

  1. 1

A rate card you can read

Squiz customers know what a metered page-view contract does at renewal. Ask each vendor for published prices or a fixed subscription, what the meter counts, and the price at double today's traffic.

  2. 2

    Paperwork procurement can download

List what your security and accessibility reviewers need: SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP or a state equivalent, EU hosting, an accessibility conformance report. Ask for the documents, not the slide.

  3. 3

    Pages without a ticket

Squiz editors build and personalize pages themselves. Have your content team rebuild a program page in each trial without a developer. Visual editors that work on the rendered page pass.

  4. 4

Hundreds of sites, one design system

Count the departmental, faculty and campaign sites that share Component Service today. Ask each vendor to show shared components with per-site control and central user management.

  5. 5

    Developers you can hire locally

Matrix specialists are scarce outside Australia and the UK. Check job boards and agency lists in your region for each alternative before you shortlist it.

Best for
Cost-sensitive public sector and education teams with .NET developers or a local Umbraco agency that want low lock-in.

Traditional CMS
6.3/10

Field-level translation of content and configuration and permissions down to individual items suit governance-heavy estates, the GPL license has no fees or metering, and the AI modules support more than 48 providers with your own keys.

Best for
Universities and agencies with an IT department that already runs infrastructure and wants full control over cost, hosting and data.
Watch out for
Certifications belong to whoever hosts it, teams report 30 to 60 hours a week of operations work, there is no native personalization or analytics, and the specialist pool is shrinking.
What it costs
Free software. Budget for hosting, a managed Drupal host or your own operations team, and a developer or agency.

Best for
Government, higher education and nonprofit teams with a Drupal agency or in-house developers that want a visual builder and zero license cost.

What you are really replacing when you leave Squiz

Squiz DXP is three products sold as one subscription: an enterprise search engine, a page builder with built-in personalization, and a managed multi-site CMS. Most estates lean on one or two of them.

Funnelback search

If permission-aware search across SharePoint, Drive and Jira is what staff and students would miss, no CMS here replaces it. Budget for a dedicated search product next to the CMS. WordPress VIP ships Elasticsearch-based search; the headless platforms ship filtering.

The page builder and personalization

If editors compose and target pages themselves, Storyblok, Drupal Canvas on Acquia or Drupal CMS, and Xperience by Kentico keep the builder. Only Xperience keeps segment-based personalization in the product.

Hundreds of sites, nothing to patch

If Component Service and managed hosting are the core of the estate, Acquia Site Factory and WordPress VIP run fleets with central governance and no customer patching. Self-hosted Drupal and Umbraco hand operations back to you.

Questions to settle before you commit

What does your usage report say?

Pull the page view, indexed document and storage figures from the Squiz portal for the past two years, and the overage invoices. Ask each alternative what it meters and for the price at double those numbers.

Which documents must procurement download?

FedRAMP or a state equivalent narrows the list to Acquia and WordPress VIP. SOC 2 Type 2 rules out Umbraco and self-hosted Drupal unless the host supplies it. An accessibility conformance report is the one Squiz could not provide; ask every vendor for theirs.

Who will replace the search?

Decide the search product before the CMS if Funnelback is mission-critical. The CMS then feeds content to it, and the shortlist stops being filtered by a feature none of them has.

Who will build it, and where are they?

Count the local agencies and job candidates for each platform in your region. Drupal and WordPress developers are everywhere, and the headless platforms need JavaScript developers. The Matrix talent problem should not follow you.

When does the agreement renew?

Squiz terms renew for a year unless either party gives 60 days' written notice. Work back from that date: platform decision, build, content freeze, parallel running. Give notice early rather than paying another metered year.

Frequently asked questions

Why do organizations leave Squiz DXP?

Cost, talent and paperwork. Squiz publishes no prices, meters page views, indexed documents, storage and data transfer with overage charges, and may reprice at renewal. Matrix specialists are concentrated in Australian and UK agencies. For government and university procurement, a SOC 2 report that is Type 1 only, no EU hosting and no retrievable accessibility conformance report are real gaps.

What is the best alternative to Squiz for universities?

Acquia for large site fleets: Site Factory runs hundreds of Drupal sites from one codebase, Arizona State University runs 426 of them, and the compliance file includes FedRAMP Moderate and SOC 2 Type 2. Drupal CMS is the free route with the same Canvas page builder. WordPress VIP suits communications teams that want the widest developer pool.

Is there a Squiz alternative with published pricing?

Several. Storyblok publishes Growth at $99 a month, Contentstack publishes Build at $29 and Growth at $299 a month, and Umbraco Cloud publishes plans from €45 a month with the core software free. Drupal CMS and Drupal have no license at all. Acquia, WordPress VIP, Liferay and Xperience by Kentico are quote-only, though the last two charge no usage overages.

What replaces Funnelback search when you leave Squiz?

Nothing on this list matches it. Funnelback indexes SharePoint, Google Drive, Alfresco and Jira with permission-aware results, more than 70 ranking factors and conversational answers. WordPress VIP includes Elasticsearch-based site search and the headless platforms include basic filtering. Plan a dedicated search product alongside the new CMS if search is mission-critical.

How long does a Squiz migration take?

Plan on six to twelve months for a multi-site university or government estate and three to six months for a single site. Content comes out through the Content API, but Matrix assets, Paint Layouts, components and segment rules are rebuilt. Ask each partner for a reference institution of similar size.
