Best Hygraph Alternatives in 2026

Hygraph gives developers a typed content graph for $199 a month and then asks for an Enterprise contract the moment editors want an approval chain. Here is what that work costs elsewhere.

DXP Scorecard Analyst TeamReviewed Ratings updated 11 min read

The short answer

Sanity, Contentstack and Storyblok are the strongest Hygraph alternatives in 2026. Sanity keeps the developer-first model, with content as code and 20 free seats; Contentstack puts custom workflows on a published $299 a month plan; Storyblok gives marketers a visual editor from $99 a month. Kontent.ai suits regulated teams, Contentful multi-channel enterprises, DatoCMS small budgets, and Strapi, Payload CMS or Directus teams that want open source.

Key takeaways

  • The Enterprise wall is why most teams look. Scheduled publishing, custom workflows, custom roles, taxonomies, audit logs, automatic backups and the uptime commitment are all Enterprise-only, and Hygraph publishes that tier at about $32,000 to $300,000 a year. Several alternatives put those basics on plans under $300 a month.
  • Growth is metered. The $199 a month plan includes one million API operations and bills overages automatically at $20 per million, so a build-heavy Next.js site or a traffic spike can add a bill the size of the base fee. There is no tier between free and $199.
  • Content Federation is the reason many teams chose Hygraph, and it is effectively an Enterprise feature: Hobby gets no Remote Sources and Growth gets one. If federation is why you came, price Enterprise honestly or plan to do the joining in your front end.
  • Marketers get nothing to work with. There is no page builder, form builder, campaign calendar, A/B testing or analytics in the product, and the AI agents are an Enterprise add-on priced at about $10,000 a year. Storyblok, Contentstack and DatoCMS all give editors more.
  • Your content model moves cleanly. Every platform here supports structured content with references, field-level localization and environments, and most serve GraphQL. The work is in the queries and the front end, not the content.

Our picks at a glance

Our analysts’ take

Hygraph is a developer's content platform in the best sense. Every model generates a fully typed GraphQL API with filtering, sorting and deep relation traversal in one request, Content Federation merges remote REST and GraphQL sources into the same graph, the TypeScript Management SDK applies schema migrations as atomic batches, and webhooks are signed and retried. The MCP server is generally available on all plans, hosting is in the EU, US or APAC on every tier, and the vendor has forced two customer-facing changes in four years. Developer-led teams on Next.js, Nuxt or Astro that need one typed API over several systems, and can pay for Enterprise, are usually right to stay.

The teams that leave hit the same wall. Scheduled publishing, custom workflows, custom roles, taxonomies, variants, automatic backups, audit logs and the uptime commitment are all Enterprise-only, which Hygraph prices at about $32,000 to $300,000 a year, plus about $10,000 a year for the AI agents. Below that, Growth at $199 a month includes one million API operations and meters the rest at $20 per million, Remote Sources are capped at one, and a content team publishes every timed launch by hand with no approval chain. Marketers find no page builder, forms or analytics, and procurement finds no accessibility statement and no HIPAA agreement.

This guide rates nine alternatives. One is a developer-led content platform that keeps the content-as-code model, two are enterprise headless platforms that publish workflows on mid-tier plans, one is a visual-first headless CMS for marketers, one is a compliance specialist, one is a budget-friendly managed platform, and three are open-source platforms that run on your own database. The ratings lean on budget predictability, because the Enterprise wall is why teams leave, then on speed to launch, because Hygraph set a high bar there.

What to look for

  1. 1

    Editorial basics on published plans

Ask which tier carries scheduled publishing, approval workflows, custom roles and audit logs. This is the list Hygraph reserves for Enterprise, and the alternatives differ widely on where they put it.

  2. 2

    A meter you can forecast

Ask what is metered, what the overage rate is and what the bill looks like at double your traffic. Hygraph meters API operations at $20 per million; some alternatives meter seats, some assets, and the open-source platforms meter nothing.

  3. 3

    A typed API developers accept

Your front end was built around GraphQL and generated types. Check that each alternative serves GraphQL or an equivalent typed API and generates types from the schema, so the data layer is a rewrite of queries rather than of architecture.

  4. 4

    Something for marketers

Decide whether editors should gain anything in the move. A visual editor, in-page preview and a usable AI assistant are available on published plans from several platforms here, and that is the cheapest time to add them.

  5. 5

    Hosting and paperwork

Hygraph gives EU hosting on every plan and a renewed SOC 2 Type 2. Confirm each alternative's regions, its certifications and whether a HIPAA agreement or an accessibility statement is available, if either is on your procurement list.

The shortlist, reviewed

#1Storyblok logo

Storyblok

Headless CMS
7.0/10
Fit score

The headless CMS that gives marketers what Hygraph never will: a visual editor where they click components on the rendered page. Nestable bloks hold a structured model, approval workflows and scheduling arrive on Growth Plus at $349 a month, and FlowMotion automates routing and translation.

Best for
Marketing teams with a development partner that want visual editing and scheduling on published mid-tier plans.
Watch out for
GraphQL, single sign-on and custom roles at scale are quote-only on Premium and Elite, the jump from $99 to $349 is driven by asset caps, and the vendor has a record of forced platform changes.
What it costs
Starter is free; Growth is $99 a month and Growth Plus $349 a month, with usage add-on packs. Premium and Elite are quote-only.

#2Contentstack logo

Contentstack

Headless CMS
7.0/10
Fit score

The enterprise headless platform that publishes a price for workflows. Growth at $299 a month adds workflows, the Visual Editor is included from the free tier, REST and GraphQL APIs come with a TypeScript SDK and type generation, and Agent OS runs governed AI agents.

Best for
Content teams that outgrew Growth at Hygraph and want approval chains, branching and governed AI without a six-figure contract.
Watch out for
Single sign-on is not on any self-serve plan and Growth allows two custom roles, overage rates are unpublished, and protected health and payment card data are prohibited by contract.
What it costs
Free plan, Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month plus $25 per extra user; Enterprise quote-only. AI runs on metered credits.

#3Sanity logo

Sanity

Headless CMS
6.9/10
Fit score

The natural destination for a developer-led team. Content models are code, Portable Text stores rich text as structured data, GROQ is among the most expressive query languages anywhere, and the hosted content store and Studio need no backend. The free tier runs to 20 seats.

Best for
Developer-led teams and product companies that want content as code, deep modeling and a generous free tier, and can customize the Studio for their editors.
Watch out for
Pricing meters eight kinds of usage, Growth has a hard document cap, and single sign-on, custom roles, Content Releases and the audit trail are Enterprise-only, so the wall exists here too. Workflows are still in beta.
What it costs
Free plan, Growth at $15 per seat per month (viewers free), Enterprise quote-only. AI credits are published at $0.05 each.

#4Kontent.ai logo

Kontent.ai

Headless CMS
6.8/10
Fit score

The compliance specialist. Kontent.ai holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018, was the first CMS certified to ISO 42001 and offers HIPAA coverage under a business associate agreement. Workflows are configurable per content type, and localization works element by element.

Best for
Regulated and multilingual organizations that need audited AI agents, approval workflows and a HIPAA agreement with almost nothing to operate.
Watch out for
Pricing is a calculator that ends in a sales quote, the free plan is non-commercial, GraphQL is read-only, and there are no marketing features.
What it costs
Quote-only beyond a free Developer plan. Pricing is calculated on seats, content types, items, languages and environments.

#5Contentful logo

Contentful

Headless CMS
6.7/10
Fit score

The reference headless CMS for content that reaches many channels. Four purpose-built APIs include GraphQL with cursor pagination, audit logs stream to your own cloud storage, deprecation windows are published well ahead and the remote MCP server reached general availability in July 2026.

Best for
Global brands feeding web, apps and other channels from one repository, with a developer team to own the front end and an enterprise budget.
Watch out for
Only the $300 a month Lite plan is published, single sign-on, custom roles and workflows need an Enterprise contract, and Salesforce closed its acquisition on September 1, 2026 without a published integration roadmap.
What it costs
Free plan, Lite at $300 per month; Premium and Enterprise quote-only. AI Actions are metered.

#6DatoCMS logo

DatoCMS

Headless CMS
6.5/10
Fit score

A GraphQL headless CMS with the best media pipeline here, images and video included, and localization across more than 400 locales. Visual Editing arrived in February 2026, every plan publishes its limits and overage rates, hosting is in the EU.

Best for
Small marketing and content teams with a developer that want structured content on GraphQL, great media and predictable European pricing.
Watch out for
Deliberately minimal built-in AI, no personalization or forms, no SOC 2 report of its own, EU-only hosting, and one project per site with no content sharing between them.
What it costs
Free developer plan, Professional at €99 per month, Scale at €199 per month, each with published limits and overage rates. Enterprise is quote-only.

#7Payload CMS logo

Payload CMS

Headless CMS
6.5/10
Fit score

The open-source CMS for Next.js teams, backed by Figma since June 2025. Content models are TypeScript, REST and GraphQL are joined by a Local API that runs inside the app, and the MIT license holds nothing back: access control, versioning and localization ship free.

Best for
Engineering-led teams building custom Next.js and TypeScript products that want a CMS with no feature paywalls and full data ownership.
Watch out for
No managed hosting since Payload Cloud was discontinued, no compliance certifications of its own, no marketing features, and marketers depend entirely on what developers build.
What it costs
Free open-source software with no paid feature tiers. Budget for your own hosting and a developer.

#8Strapi logo

Strapi

Headless CMS
6.4/10
Fit score

The most widely adopted open-source headless CMS. The MIT-licensed core runs on your own PostgreSQL or MySQL database with REST and GraphQL, the version 5 plugin system is the deepest in its class, and the first-party MCP server reached general availability ahead of its peers.

Best for
Developer-led teams on Node.js and TypeScript that want an open-source CMS with minimal lock-in and the option to self-host or use Strapi Cloud.
Watch out for
No visual editor, personalization or real-time collaboration, single sign-on and audit logs are paid features, and self-hosting means you own upgrades and security advisories.
What it costs
Free open-source core. Strapi Cloud plans are published with per-tier limits and overage rates; Enterprise is quote-only.

#9Directus logo

Directus

Headless CMS
5.9/10
Fit score

The headless layer that sits on your own SQL database. REST and GraphQL are generated from the data model, permissions reach row and field level, and the content MCP server is among the most complete available. Removing Directus leaves your tables intact.

Best for
Full-stack TypeScript teams that already own a PostgreSQL or MySQL database and want a content and data backend with very low lock-in.
Watch out for
The June 2026 move to the MSCL license is actively enforced, so unlicensed instances above the grant thresholds lose single sign-on and custom permission rules after 30 days. Security advisories were frequent in 2026, and there is no personalization or testing.
What it costs

The three exits from Hygraph

Teams leave Hygraph for one of three reasons, and each points at a different part of this shortlist. Name yours before the demos start.

The Enterprise wall

If editors need scheduling, approvals and custom roles and the Enterprise quote was out of reach, Contentstack publishes workflows at $299 a month, Storyblok at $349, and Kontent.ai builds them in. Sanity has the same wall for single sign-on and releases, so check before you move.

The meter

If API overages on Growth surprised you, DatoCMS and Storyblok publish every rate, Sanity meters seats and usage with every price on the page, and Strapi, Payload CMS and Directus on your own database meter nothing at all.

The marketers

If the team now wants to build pages without a developer, Storyblok and DatoCMS ship visual editing on published plans and Contentstack includes its Visual Editor from the free tier. Sanity, Strapi and Payload CMS depend on what developers build.

Questions to settle before you migrate

Which plan carries the editorial basics?

Write down what Hygraph gated: scheduled publishing, workflows, custom roles, taxonomies, audit logs, backups, uptime commitment. Ask each alternative which tier carries each one, in writing.

What replaces Content Federation?

If remote sources were the point, decide whether the joining moves to your front end or to a platform that does it. Contentstack offers product-picker apps for commerce engines; Directus wraps your own database; most of the others expect the front end to combine sources.

What happens to the queries?

Your front end speaks GraphQL. Contentful, Contentstack, DatoCMS, Strapi, Payload CMS and Directus serve it too, so the move is a query rewrite. Sanity means learning GROQ. Storyblok reserves GraphQL for Premium. Budget accordingly.

Where does the data live?

Hygraph hosts in the EU on every plan. Confirm each alternative's regions on the plan you would buy. DatoCMS is EU-only, Contentstack offers seven regions, and the open-source platforms live wherever you put them.

Who runs it after launch?

Every managed platform here patches itself. Strapi, Payload CMS and Directus are software you run, so an upgrade calendar and security advisories come with the savings. Decide whether your team wants that trade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Hygraph?

Sanity for developer-led teams that want to keep a content-as-code model, Contentstack for teams that need approval workflows on a published plan, and Storyblok for marketers who want a visual editor. Kontent.ai suits regulated industries, Contentful suits multi-channel enterprises, DatoCMS is the lowest-cost managed GraphQL option, and Strapi, Payload CMS and Directus are the open-source routes.

Why are companies leaving Hygraph?

Mostly the Enterprise wall. Scheduled publishing, custom workflows, custom roles, audit logs and the uptime commitment are all Enterprise-only, and Hygraph publishes that tier at about $32,000 to $300,000 a year. Below it, Growth at $199 a month meters API operations at $20 per million and allows one Remote Source, and marketers get no page builder, forms or analytics.

Which Hygraph alternatives support GraphQL?

Contentful, Contentstack, DatoCMS, Strapi, Payload CMS and Directus all serve GraphQL, so the migration is a query rewrite rather than an architecture change. Kontent.ai offers a read-only GraphQL API. Sanity uses its own GROQ query language. Storyblok reserves GraphQL for its sales-gated Premium and Elite tiers.

What is the cheapest Hygraph alternative?

Strapi, Payload CMS and Directus are free open-source software on your own hosting, though Directus requires a paid license above its grant thresholds. Among managed platforms, Sanity starts at $15 per seat, Storyblok at $99 a month and DatoCMS at €99, each with a free tier and published overage rates. All three sit below Hygraph's $199 Growth plan.

How hard is it to migrate from Hygraph to another headless CMS?

The content is the manageable part. Hygraph's Management SDK and GraphQL API export models, entries, assets and locales, and every platform here imports structured content through a scriptable API. The work is rewriting the queries and generated types in the front end, rebuilding any Remote Source joins and reconnecting webhooks. Plan a few weeks of developer time for a marketing site.
