## The short answer

Choose Umbraco if you want a free, MIT-licensed .NET CMS with published hosting prices, freedom to self-host and AI that runs on your own model keys. Choose Xperience by Kentico if your marketers want email, automation, segmentation and a visual page builder in one licensed, vendor-hosted product with SOC 2 Type II. Overall capability is close. The choice depends on whether you would rather add marketing features one paid add-on at a time or buy them bundled on a quote-only annual contract.

**Choose Umbraco if:**

- You want no licence fee and the option to self-host with no vendor contract
- You run many languages or sites and want no per-site licence cost
- You want AI on your own model and key, such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini
- Procurement needs a published accessibility conformance report for the editing interface

**Choose Kentico if:**

- Your marketers need native email, automation and segmentation without buying separate tools
- You want the vendor to host everything on Azure behind a managed CDN
- Your security questionnaire requires a SOC 2 Type II report from the vendor itself
- You run Kentico Xperience 13 and face its end of support in December 2026

## The differences that matter

| Area | Umbraco | Xperience by Kentico |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pricing model | The MIT-licensed core is free, and Umbraco Cloud plans are published from €45 to €730 a month with monthly billing. | Quote only on annual contracts, priced by channels, tier, AI credits and cloud level; third-party listings start near $1,990 a month. |
| Marketing tools | Personalization, A/B testing and analytics need Umbraco Engage, licensed separately at €5,100 to €18,800 a year; there is no native email send. | Email, automation, segments, forms and personalization ship in the core, but there is no native A/B testing for pages or emails. |
| Page building | Block Grid lets editors compose pages from approved blocks in a form view, not live on the rendered page. | Page Builder offers drag-and-drop sections and widgets on the live rendered page, for website channels only. |
| AI model choice | Bring your own key from more than a dozen providers with no markup, plus first-party semantic vector search. | AIRA runs only on Kentico-managed Azure OpenAI, paid in credits, and its four marketing agents are still in preview. |
| Compliance | ISO 27001:2022 since January 2026 and a published accessibility report, but no SOC 2 report of its own. | ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II across 20 Azure regions, but no accessibility conformance report for the admin interface. |
| Security record | Several high-severity 2026 advisories, including an August flaw leading to remote code execution left unpatched on versions 14 to 16. | Advisories nearly every month of 2026, including several SQL injections and an MFA bypass, most affecting every version back to 22.0. |

## Pricing & total cost

Umbraco's core costs nothing to license, whatever your traffic, seats or content volume. Umbraco Cloud adds managed hosting on flat published plans: Starter €45, Standard €280 and Professional €730 a month, with unlimited team members and no overage charges. Add-ons are fixed yearly fees, such as Workflow or Commerce at €2,800 each, and Umbraco Engage for personalization and testing at €5,100 to €18,800. The 2027 price list was published three months ahead.

Xperience by Kentico is quote only. The price scales with channels, a Standard or Advanced tier, an AIRA credit package and a SaaS cloud level, and SaaS hosting is included. Third-party listings start near $1,990 a month. Contracts are annual, and reviewers report increases of up to 25 percent. Multi-channel and enhanced marketing features sit in the Advanced tier.

Both need a .NET partner or in-house team. Umbraco builds typically run £10K to £250K, and one to three people can run a site. Kentico projects usually take three to six months with a larger team. Umbraco is cheaper to enter and to leave; the gap narrows once you add Engage and several add-ons.

**What to ask Umbraco:**

- Which add-ons will we need, such as Workflow, Engage or Commerce, and what is the total yearly cost?
- Will our traffic need a dedicated-resource tier, load balancing or extra environments on Umbraco Cloud?
- What would extended support for Umbraco 13 cost if we cannot move before 14 December 2026?

**What to ask Kentico:**

- What will our configuration cost per year across channels, tier, AIRA credits and cloud level?
- What cap on annual renewal increases will you write into the contract?
- Which of the features we need require the Advanced tier, and when will native page A/B testing ship?

## Implementation & hosting

Both run on ASP.NET Core, so both need .NET developers. Umbraco can be self-hosted on Linux, Windows, Docker or any cloud, or run on Umbraco Cloud in six Azure regions. Its concepts (document types, the content tree, Razor templates) are quick for .NET developers to learn, and a team of one to three can build and run a typical site. Self-hosted teams own CDN setup, patching and monitoring.

Xperience by Kentico is mostly bought as managed SaaS on Azure behind a Cloudflare CDN, with QA, staging and production environments, uptime checks and monthly releases applied for you. Private cloud and self-hosting are options. Developers must learn more platform-specific ideas, such as Page Builder widgets, channels and Kentico's own content API, and projects usually need a dedicated team.

Patching matters on both. Each had several high-severity advisories in 2026. Umbraco 13 reaches end of life on 14 December 2026, and leaving it means rebuilding editing interface customisations. Kentico guarantees at least 12 months of backward compatibility after a deprecation. Neither offers an official JavaScript SDK, so headless Next.js teams write their own glue code.

## Marketing & personalization

Xperience by Kentico is the stronger marketing suite out of the box. Contacts, dynamic segments, widget personalization, forms, native email and a visual automation builder share one profile. A Campaigns feature added in March 2026 ties briefs, assets and customer journeys together, and Page Builder lets marketers drag widgets onto the live page. The gap is testing: there is no native A/B testing for pages or emails, so Kentico points to VWO through its Tag Manager.

Umbraco's core gives editors a well-liked interface, Block Grid page composition, versioning and strong multilingual tools, but no segmentation, personalization or email sending. Umbraco Engage adds segments, personas, campaign tracking and proper A/B testing with significance reporting, at extra cost. Approval workflows also need the paid Workflow add-on.

For multi-site work the two are close. Umbraco runs many sites from one installation with no per-site fee and finer language variants. Xperience by Kentico runs website, email and headless channels on a shared content hub, with governed taxonomies and more asset tooling, including an official Bynder connector.

## AI capabilities

Umbraco is the more open choice. Umbraco.AI lets you bring your own key from more than a dozen providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and Amazon Bedrock, and pay them directly with no markup. Four official MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers let assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor read and edit content under each user's permissions. Umbraco Automate can run agents unattended in event-driven workflows, draft-only by default, and semantic vector search is a stable first-party add-on.

Xperience by Kentico's AIRA runs only on Kentico-managed Azure OpenAI, metered by credits, with no option to use your own model or key. It does more for marketers inside the product: native AI translation with brand terminology, segment rules written from plain language, and four marketing agents for SEO, content strategy, journeys and campaigns, all still in preview. Developers get KentiCopilot plugins for coding agents and a Management MCP server that left preview in September 2026.

Both create AI output as drafts and respect user permissions. Umbraco adds versioned guardrails that can block or redact prompts and responses.

## Moving between them

These products come from different vendors and share no code, so a move either way is a rebuild. The content models are similar in spirit, but types must be remapped, templates and widgets rewritten, and integrations reconnected. Kentico's open-source Migration Toolkit handles older Kentico versions, not Umbraco, and it never migrates code. Umbraco stores content in a standard SQL database, which makes export simpler.

Moving to Xperience by Kentico makes sense for teams stacking Engage, Workflow and other add-ons who want one integrated marketing product and vendor hosting. Moving to Umbraco suits teams that want to cut licence cost, avoid annual contracts or choose their own AI provider.

Two deadlines shape timing. Umbraco 13 ends on 14 December 2026, and Kentico Xperience 13 support ends on 31 December 2026. Both force a rebuild anyway, which makes this a natural point to compare. Teams content on a current version of either, or with heavy custom code, should not switch for features alone.

## Biggest Differences

### Where Umbraco leads most

- **Free / Hobby Tier** (88 vs 22 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): Umbraco CMS is MIT licensed with no usage limits, no user caps, and no expiry. Developers can self-host on any .NET hosting environment (Azure App Service, local IIS, Docker, Linux) for minimal cost. SQLite support eliminates the SQL Server requirement for development and simple deployments. The full feature set of the open-source core is available with no restrictions. Umbraco Cloud offers a free trial but not a permanent free tier.
- **Bring your own AI model/key (BYOM/BYOK)** (84 vs 20 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): Umbraco.AI is built on Microsoft.Extensions.AI with official provider packages that grew again in September 2026 to include Alibaba, OpenRouter, Moonshot and Z.AI alongside OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon Bedrock, Google Gemini, Microsoft Foundry, Mistral, DeepSeek, Hugging Face, Fireworks AI and Together AI. Customers bring their own keys and pay providers directly with no Umbraco markup, can hold multiple connections and profiles per capability, and switch models by configuration; OpenRouter alone opens hundreds of models. Best-in-class provider flexibility.
- **Contract flexibility** (85 vs 40 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): No vendor contract for the core open-source software. Self-hosted deployments have zero vendor contractual lock-in. Umbraco Cloud offers monthly billing on all tiers (Starter through Professional), avoiding annual-only lock-in. Commercial add-on licenses are per-domain with annual renewals. You can self-host to avoid all vendor contracts entirely — maximum flexibility at the core level.
- **Pricing transparency** (90 vs 56 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): Umbraco CMS is MIT licensed with zero licensing ambiguity, and Umbraco Cloud prices are public (Starter €45/mo, Standard €280/mo, Professional €730/mo, dedicated-resource tiers listed separately). The 2027 price post (30 Sept 2026) publishes the full catalogue three months ahead: Cloud plans, environments, every add-on (Forms, Deploy On-premises, Workflow, Commerce, Engage), support plans and even the €75,000 Umbraco for Enterprise bundle. Not higher because the Enterprise Cloud tier is still 'Talk to us' and some markets now show dedicated resources folded into the default project price at creation.
- **Vendor lock-in and exit cost** (82 vs 48 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): MIT license means zero software vendor lock-in. Content is stored in standard SQL Server/SQLite with a documented schema. Media files use configurable storage providers (local, Azure Blob, S3). The Delivery API enables CMS-agnostic frontend delivery, making frontend code portable. Migration away from Umbraco requires standard database export and content transformation — no proprietary binary formats or vendor exit fees. Exit costs are developer time for content migration only.

### Where Xperience by Kentico leads most

- **SOC 2 Type II** (35 vs 76 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): Kentico holds a SOC 2 Type II attestation, with controls verified annually and continuous monitoring, and the report is distributed through the Kentico Trust Center. Which Trust Service Criteria are covered, and the report period, could not be verified because the trust center blocks non-browser access. That holds the score below the 85+ tier.
- **AI translation assistance** (38 vs 66 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): AIRA translations are a native MT feature, not a TMS hookup. They translate pages (including Page Builder content) and content items into new language variants as reviewable drafts, and bulk jobs run through mass translation and a Translation queue application. Admins can configure brand terminology, words to leave untranslated, formatting rules, custom instructions, and the global tone of voice. Held just below 70 because there is no translation quality scoring and links are not re-targeted automatically.
- **Email marketing & ESP integration** (45 vs 72 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): Native email channels with Email Builder, recipient lists and newsletters, regular and automation-triggered emails, widget personalization, statistics, preview and content locking, sent through SMTP or the official SendGrid integration. There is no native email A/B testing (Kentico points to its roadmap) and no HubSpot, Marketo or SFMC connector, but native send still covers subscriber management, triggered sends and preview, so it stays above 70.
- **Campaign management** (38 vs 63 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): A dedicated Campaigns feature (March 2026) combines campaign briefs, associated digital assets, and linked customer journeys with AIRA Campaign Insights for AI-driven KPI evaluation. The May 2026 refresh added a guided campaign-brief authoring flow: the Campaign Manager Agent asks marketers a structured series of questions (brand, goals, audiences, KPIs, channels, messaging) and restructures the answers into a formatted brief. The production-ready Campaign Manager Agent (April 2026) evaluates campaign performance against KPIs, audience groups, and journey metrics and generates final reports comparing success across multiple campaigns — a significant step toward portfolio-level campaign orchestration. Email Builder (production March 2025) provides visual drag-and-drop email authoring. Marketing automation with conditional branching is native. Multi-channel coordination and a dedicated content calendar UI are still absent.
- **Real-time collaboration** (36 vs 60 for Umbraco vs Xperience by Kentico): Content overwrite protection (May 2026), opt-in content locking for pages, reusable and headless items (June 2026) and emails (July 2026) with lock-owner notifications and an override permission, plus workflow step comments and notification emails. There is no real-time co-editing, presence or inline commenting with mentions, so it sits in the locking-plus-async band.

## Questions Buyers Ask

### Is Xperience by Kentico the same product as Kentico Xperience 13?

No. Xperience by Kentico is Kentico's rebuilt platform and the successor to Kentico Xperience 13, whose support ends on 31 December 2026. Kentico provides an open-source migration tool and an AI migration plugin. The editorial model will feel familiar, but custom code must be rewritten, and the older intranet and social features were dropped.

### Which suits a regulated or public-sector organisation, Umbraco or Xperience by Kentico?

It depends on the paperwork procurement asks for. Xperience by Kentico holds ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II and offers 20 Azure regions. Umbraco holds ISO 27001:2022, is based in Denmark with published sub-processors, and publishes an accessibility conformance report for its editing interface, which Kentico lacks. Neither offers a HIPAA business associate agreement.

### Can I try Umbraco or Xperience by Kentico before buying?

Umbraco's core is free with no time limit, so you can install it locally with SQLite and build a full prototype. Xperience by Kentico offers a 7-day hosted trial or a 30-day local evaluation licence, and the platform is not open source. Agree a longer evaluation with Kentico if you need one.

### Which works better with a headless Next.js front end?

Neither is ideal. Neither ships an official JavaScript SDK or visual editing for decoupled front ends. Umbraco 18 publishes typed OpenAPI schemas per content type, so teams can generate TypeScript clients with outside tools. Xperience by Kentico offers a read-only GraphQL API with no TypeScript type generation or Next.js starter. Both suit .NET teams better.

### Which costs less to own, Umbraco or Xperience by Kentico?

Umbraco scores higher on total cost of ownership (72 vs 53), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.
