## The short answer

Choose SitecoreAI if your site is a public marketing website, especially across many brands or regions, and you want personalization, A/B testing and AI agents in one license. Choose Salesforce Experience Cloud if your site is really a logged-in front end to Salesforce CRM: customer, partner or help center portals with record-level access and strict compliance needs. Both are quote-only and partner-led. The choice depends on whether your visitors are anonymous prospects or known, authenticated customers.

**Choose Sitecore if:**

- Your main site is a public marketing website that personalization and testing must grow
- You run many brands, regions or languages under one central team
- You want AI agents to build pages and translate content under brand rules
- You run Sitecore XP or XM today and want to stop self-hosting

**Choose Salesforce if:**

- You already run Salesforce CRM and need customer or partner portals on its records
- Logged-in visitors must see only their own cases, orders and accounts
- You need FedRAMP High, HIPAA coverage or Defense Impact Level 5 authorization
- You sell B2B with account pricing, quotes and reordering on one portal

## The differences that matter

| Area | SitecoreAI | Salesforce Experience Cloud |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Core purpose | A marketing platform for public websites, with personalization, testing and site search in the base license. | A portal platform built on the CRM, with self-registration, single sign-on and record-level sharing for logged-in users. |
| Personalization and testing | Real-time audiences, component personalization and A/B/n tests are built in and now reach apps and third-party sites. | Audience rules use CRM fields; A/B testing and recommendations need Marketing Cloud Personalization or third-party tools. |
| Content model | Inherited templates, nested components, version comparison and field-level language fallback suit content-heavy, multilingual teams. | Content types are flat records of up to 15 fields, with no nested blocks or reusable fragments. |
| Site delivery | Sitecore hosts the CMS, but your team builds and hosts the Next.js or Angular website itself. | Salesforce renders and hosts the site, with a CDN, custom domains and sandboxes included. |
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001 and regional hosting, but no FedRAMP authorization or published HIPAA agreement. | FedRAMP High (US federal cloud authorization), Defense Impact Level 5, HIPAA coverage and an EU data zone. |
| AI focus | AI serves content work: brand-grounded writing, translation, alt text, Agentic Studio and an official Model Context Protocol server. | AI serves self-service: Agentforce agents on portals, bring-your-own model and an audit log of every prompt. |

## Pricing & total cost

Neither vendor publishes prices. SitecoreAI is quote-only and metered on visits, storage, bandwidth and builder seats. Third-party estimates put all-in annual spend at $75K to $500K or more, roughly $375K to $2.5M over five years. Personalization, testing and search now sit in the base license, but answer-engine tracking needs a separate Scrunch subscription. Contracts are annual, with no monthly billing or self-serve downgrade.

Salesforce Experience Cloud stacks three meters. Internal seats list at $195 to $395 per user per month since September 2026. External portal licenses run $2 to $35 per login or member, so a 5,000-member portal at $5 costs about $300K a year. Agentforce usage is billed in consumption credits on top, and renewals carry 8 to 10 percent uplifts.

Beyond the license, SitecoreAI buyers pay a systems integrator ($150K to $350K for mid-market builds) and front-end hosting, often $25K to $100K a year. Salesforce buyers pay a premium for certified developers and an administrator, but hosting is included. Over several years, Salesforce costs grow with portal membership, while SitecoreAI costs grow with traffic and sites.

**What to ask Sitecore:**

- Which metrics among visits, storage, bandwidth and builder seats apply to our modules, and what does overage cost?
- Is full Content Hub asset management included, or only the Essentials tier?
- Which announced deprecations would force changes to our custom code during the contract term?

**What to ask Salesforce:**

- Which external license, per login or per member, fits our expected portal traffic?
- How many credits will our Agentforce agents consume, and what do extra credits cost?
- Can you cap the renewal uplift and include Premier support in our edition?

## Implementation & hosting

Both products are vendor-run SaaS with no self-hosted authoring. The difference is the front end. SitecoreAI delivers content over GraphQL, and your team builds and hosts the website as a Next.js or Angular app on Vercel, Netlify or its own servers. Salesforce Experience Cloud renders and hosts the site itself.

Skills differ sharply. SitecoreAI needs certified Sitecore developers for templates, renderings and SXA (Sitecore's site-building framework), though front-end work uses mainstream React or Angular. Salesforce builds depend on Apex, Lightning Web Components, governor limits (per-transaction resource caps) and the sharing model, none of which ports elsewhere. A Salesforce team usually needs 3 to 5 people, including an administrator. Integrator estimates put a core portal at 8 to 20 weeks, while a move from Sitecore XP or XM to SitecoreAI takes 9 to 14 months.

Day to day, Salesforce is more predictable. Three releases a year arrive with sandbox previews and advance enforcement dates. SitecoreAI ships almost weekly and sets short deadlines: Explorer retired in September 2026 after its date moved forward, and Experience Editor retires on January 1, 2027. Salesforce's weak spot is reliability: its contract promises only commercially reasonable availability, and a September 2026 outage lasted about seven and a half hours. SitecoreAI commits to 99.95% delivery uptime.

## Marketing & personalization

For marketers, SitecoreAI is the more complete tool. Page builder edits the live site with drag-and-drop components, page branches and previews by language, device, audience and future date. Real-time audiences, component personalization, A/B/n tests and multi-armed bandit allocation come in the base license. A campaign calendar, briefs and event-triggered follow-up emails cover campaign work.

Salesforce Experience Cloud's Experience Builder is a capable drag-and-drop editor, and audience rules can show content by CRM fields, location or login state. There is no native A/B testing, recommendations or conversion tracking. Those come from Marketing Cloud Personalization or injected third-party tools. Web-to-Lead forms that write straight into CRM records are a genuine strength.

For assets and many brands, SitecoreAI offers Content Hub asset management, site collections, shared component libraries and per-site brand kits. Salesforce offers per-site themes and a basic media library. Enterprise asset management comes through Bynder or other connectors, and there is no cross-brand policy enforcement.

## AI capabilities

SitecoreAI puts AI into content work. Editors get brand-grounded writing, AI translation that applies each site's glossary, automated alt text and bulk tagging. Agentic Studio offers 20+ prebuilt agents and a no-code builder, with review cards so a person approves each change. The Marketer MCP server (Model Context Protocol, the standard AI assistants use to call tools) lets Claude, Copilot Studio or Cursor build pages. AI use is not billed per token, and Sitecore holds ISO/IEC 42001 certification for AI management.

Salesforce Experience Cloud puts AI into self-service. Agentforce agents run on portal sites, coordinate with each other and react to CRM events. Hosted MCP servers expose org data under each user's permissions. Buyers can bring their own model from Amazon Bedrock, Azure OpenAI or Google Vertex AI, which SitecoreAI largely does not allow. The Einstein Trust Layer masks personal data and logs every prompt and response. The CMS itself has no native image generation, alt text or machine translation, and agent usage is billed in credits.

## Moving between them

These are different vendors and different kinds of product, not editions of one platform. Moving between them is a full replatform. Sitecore templates with inheritance and nested components do not map onto Salesforce's flat content types of up to 15 fields, so content must be remodelled and often simplified. Going the other way, portal logic in Apex, Flows and sharing rules has no SitecoreAI equivalent, and visitor login must be custom built.

Leaving Salesforce typically means a 6 to 18 month rebuild, because layouts, components and automations are proprietary. Leaving SitecoreAI is easier on the front end, a standard Next.js or Angular app, but the content backend still needs migration scripting. Partner markets differ too: every global systems integrator runs a Salesforce practice, while certified Sitecore developers are scarce in the US and Europe.

Do not move a CRM-backed customer portal onto SitecoreAI, and do not move a multi-brand marketing estate onto Salesforce Experience Cloud. If you need both a marketing site and a CRM portal, consider keeping each product for its own job.

## Biggest Differences

### Where SitecoreAI leads most

- **A/B testing and experimentation** (86 vs 20 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): Sitecore Personalize ships full-stack experimentation with component-level web experiments, server-side interactive experiments, triggered experiments, multi-armed bandit allocation, statistical significance reporting and auto-winner selection. Oct 8 adds headless A/B/n tests of up to six variants delivered through APIs to mobile apps, SPAs and third-party sites, with goals and performance tracking centralized in SitecoreAI, so experimentation now spans channels beyond the website. Oct 12 Marketer MCP and Agent API tools warn about and safeguard affected A/B tests before components or content are removed or deleted, and the Oct 20 Page builder release fixes A/B tests disappearing after setting the PAGES_PERSONALIZE_SCOPE variable. Oct 1 allows copying container components with their items for layout variants; June 19 added audience targeting for tests. Web experiments are marketer-operated; headless and interactive tests need developer integration.
- **AI translation assistance** (78 vs 20 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): Native AI translation (GA Dec 8, 2025) covers component-level, item-level (May 12, 2026) and full-site bulk translation, and the Sept 4, 2026 release closed the key brand-voice gap: translations now apply both the Glossary and Localization and the Do's and Don'ts sections of the brand kit assigned to the site, where previously only part of the brand kit was honored. Workflow fidelity also improved with translated pages inheriting source workflow state (Aug 18, 2026) and selective per-language publish/unpublish, and Content Hub Variants AI Translator covers 20+ languages. Not higher because the engine is Azure/Microsoft-hosted rather than a proprietary MT stack and there is still no published translation quality-scoring dashboard.
- **AI image & media generation** (70 vs 15 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): Alt-text automation is now a first-class asset-workflow feature: Content Hub's AI-assisted image alt text generation (Sept 4, 2026) lets admins configure the Alt text field to auto-analyze the image and draft a description, on top of automatic metadata enrichment on upload, the bulk 'Tag with AI' operation across multi-asset selections, and Scripting SDK `m.asset.tag.with.ai`; the Sept 10, 2026 Page builder fix makes the Add Media dialog surface Content Hub alt text from the asset's configured field, closing the loop into authoring. Image generation itself ships via the Agentic Studio chat image tool and Content Hub's DALL-E integration, alongside contextual media search in Page builder (Jun 26, 2026), embargo dates, and the modernized Media page. Not higher because there is still no evidence of native smart-crop/focal-point AI or a Firefly-class generator embedded directly in the asset-picking workflow — generation remains chat- and Content-Hub-mediated.
- **AI metadata & SEO automation** (82 vs 28 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): AI discoverability went generally available on Oct 2, 2026 with improved onboarding: 'Optimize content with AI' and AEO opportunities surface per-page citeability and retrievability scores, recommend content improvements, and apply them in one click as a new Page builder version with the affected field highlighted. That sits on top of auto-generated SEO titles, meta descriptions and alt text, the named AEO/SEO Researcher agent, and Content SDK 2.4 (Sept 10, 2026), which serves `llms.txt` managed from SitecoreAI config and generates page metadata plus Open Graph tags by default in the Next.js starters. Not higher because the Scrunch-powered scoring still requires a separate Scrunch subscription, and structured-data/schema-markup suggestion remains undocumented.
- **AI-assisted content operations** (76 vs 28 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): AI is woven through routine content ops: auto-tagging on ingestion plus bulk 'Tag with AI' across asset selections, the Bulk Content Generator agent, calendar-triggered scheduling via Agentic Flows, multi-step campaign routing, parallel per-item bulk execution (May 15, 2026), and the Signals dashboard's daily recommended actions. The Sept 16, 2026 Scrunch optimization flow adds AI-recommended edits that route through normal versioning and approval, Brand context generation (Aug 31, 2026) removes manual setup work for agent grounding, and the Strategy app now consolidates briefs and a campaign calendar (Aug 12, 2026). Not higher because standalone duplicate detection and automated content lifecycle/expiry management remain unconfirmed in 2025–2026 documentation.

### Where Salesforce Experience Cloud leads most

- **Customer identity & authenticated experiences** (38 vs 88 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): Authenticated portals are Experience Cloud's core: external user licenses, self-registration, social sign-on, SAML and OIDC federation with site-specific endpoints, and record-level sharing that drives gated, account-specific content and self-service account pages. Consent management and advanced CIAM features lean on Salesforce Customer Identity and Data 360.
- **Social and collaboration features** (18 vs 62 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): Chatter provides a social layer within Experience Cloud: news feeds, comments, likes/reactions, @mentions, file sharing, and private messages. Salesforce Groups support community spaces by department or interest (public, private, unlisted). IdeaExchange is a native module for idea submission and voting. Polls are available within Chatter posts. Peer recognition widgets are available via AppExchange. Native Slack integration (Salesforce Channels, Slackbot) enhances collaboration, including bi-directional Chatter/Slack messaging. However, discussion forums with threading, community moderation tools, and advanced engagement gamification require customization or AppExchange.
- **Managed site delivery & front-end hosting** (44 vs 82 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): Rendering and hosting are both in the product: Experience Builder renders LWR and Aura sites, and Salesforce operates them with CDN, TLS, custom domains, sandboxes and platform SLAs; Winter '27 adds hosted React and Angular multi-framework apps on the platform. Rendering is tied to LWR or Salesforce frameworks and external headless frontends are self-hosted. Native with framework limits.
- **Bring your own AI model/key (BYOM/BYOK)** (46 vs 82 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): BYOLLM via Einstein Studio Model Builder (GA) supports Amazon Bedrock (Anthropic Claude, Llama, Cohere, AI21, IBM Granite, Databricks), Azure OpenAI, OpenAI direct, and Google Vertex AI (Gemini). LLM Open Connector (GA October 2024) extends BYOLLM to any provider via a REST adapter with no proprietary lock-in, and custom predictive ML models (scikit-learn, TensorFlow) register via Einstein Studio. BYOLLM consumes 30% fewer Einstein Requests, with data residency via Einstein Trust Layer zero-retention guarantees.
- **Funding and stability** (57 vs 88 for SitecoreAI vs Salesforce Experience Cloud): Salesforce (NYSE: CRM) reported record Q2 FY27 revenue of $11.3B (+11% YoY, including $456M from Informatica), a 34.1% non-GAAP operating margin, free cash flow up 81%, and raised FY27 revenue guidance by $200M. Against that, August 2026 brought a further round of 133 layoffs across San Francisco and Seattle, the fourth San Francisco cut in under a year, as the company reallocates toward Agentforce, which leaves Experience Cloud's investment priority less certain. Financial stability is not in question; strategic focus is shifting.

## Questions Buyers Ask

### Is SitecoreAI the same product as XM Cloud?

Yes. SitecoreAI is the new name for XM Cloud, Sitecore's SaaS platform, and it now includes the former Sitecore CDP, Personalize and Search capabilities in one license. It is not the same as self-hosted Sitecore XP or XM. Moving from those is a replatform with a front-end rebuild, which practitioners put at 9 to 14 months.

### Which handles customer logins and gated portals better?

Salesforce Experience Cloud, clearly. Self-registration, social sign-on, SAML and OIDC single sign-on and record-level sharing are built in, so each customer sees only their own cases and orders. SitecoreAI has no visitor login or registration layer and no documented integration with Auth0 or Okta, so gated portals are custom work in the front end.

### Which suits a regulated healthcare or government organization?

Salesforce Experience Cloud. It is named a HIPAA covered service under a signed business associate agreement and holds FedRAMP High and Defense Impact Level 5 authorization. SitecoreAI holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO/IEC 27001 with EU, US or Asia-Pacific hosting, but has no FedRAMP authorization or published HIPAA agreement template, and authoring cannot be self-hosted.

### Do I need Salesforce CRM to use Experience Cloud?

Yes. Experience Cloud requires a Salesforce CRM org on the Core, Advanced or Max editions, or a free Developer Edition for learning only. Internal seats list at $195 to $395 per user per month, and external portal licenses are added on top. Organizations without Salesforce face that prerequisite cost and lock-in before building anything.

### Which suits a mid-size team with a limited budget?

Neither is a natural fit. Both are quote-only, sold on annual contracts and built by partners, with no free production tier. SitecoreAI mid-market implementations commonly run $150K to $350K plus front-end hosting. Salesforce portal builds take 8 to 20 weeks with a team of 3 to 5. A mid-size Salesforce customer building a portal will find Experience Cloud the shorter path.

### Which is better, SitecoreAI or Salesforce Experience Cloud?

SitecoreAI scores higher on overall suite capability (73 vs 57). SitecoreAI wins 7 of the 10 scoring categories and Salesforce Experience Cloud wins 3.

### Which costs less to own, SitecoreAI or Salesforce Experience Cloud?

SitecoreAI scores higher on total cost of ownership (40 vs 34), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.

### Which is easier to implement and run, SitecoreAI or Salesforce Experience Cloud?

SitecoreAI scores higher on build simplicity (64 vs 45), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. Salesforce Experience Cloud scores higher on operational ease (58 vs 54), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.

### Which is better for marketing teams, SitecoreAI or Salesforce Experience Cloud?

SitecoreAI scores higher on fit for marketing sites (78 vs 44), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.

### Which has stronger AI features, SitecoreAI or Salesforce Experience Cloud?

SitecoreAI scores higher on AI enablement (78 vs 56), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
