## The short answer

Choose SitecoreAI if you run a large marketing organization with many brands or regions and want page building, personalization, testing and site search in one license. Choose Contentful if a developer-led team delivers structured content to websites, apps and AI agents and prefers a lighter build and a published entry price. The decision turns on whether you want those marketing tools bundled, or would rather assemble them around a cleaner, cheaper content API.

**Choose Sitecore if:**

- You run dozens of brand or regional sites and need central governance
- Marketers must build pages, personalize and test without waiting on developers
- You are an existing Sitecore XP or XM customer ready to leave self-hosting
- You want native forms, site search and event-triggered emails without extra vendors

**Choose Contentful if:**

- Developers deliver content to websites, mobile apps and AI agents from one repository
- You want to start on a published plan and launch in weeks, not months
- Your team wants AI features running on its own model provider
- You pair a CMS with Shopify or commercetools for composable commerce

## The differences that matter

| Area | SitecoreAI | Contentful |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Marketing suite | Page builder, personalization, A/B/n tests, forms and site search are all in the base license. | Personalization and Studio page building are enterprise add-ons, and forms, site search and marketing automation come from other vendors. |
| Multi-brand model | Site collections share components, page designs and datasources across brands, with per-site brand kits steering AI writing. | Each brand is a separate space, templates fork rather than inherit, and entries cannot be syndicated between spaces. |
| Pricing model | Quote only, metered on visits, storage, bandwidth and seats, on annual contracts with only a 14-day trial. | Free and Lite at $300 a month are published, Premium and Enterprise are quote only, and cancelling drops you to Free. |
| Build effort | Practitioners report 9 to 14 months to move from XP or XM, and certified Sitecore developers are scarce. | Integrators report 4 to 8 weeks for a single site, and generalist TypeScript and React developers are productive quickly. |
| Content APIs | GraphQL delivery through Experience Edge and 18 webhook events, but content webhooks are unsigned and never retry. | Separate delivery, preview, management and image APIs plus GraphQL, eight official SDKs and signed webhooks with an activity log. |
| AI model choice | Agentic Studio and a Marketer MCP server run mostly on Sitecore's own Azure OpenAI setup. | AI Actions run on the buyer's own model through OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex or Azure OpenAI. |

## Pricing & total cost

SitecoreAI publishes no prices. Each quote is built from modules, visits, sites and builder seats, signed as an annual commitment with no monthly billing or self-serve downgrade. Third-party estimates put all-in annual spend at $75K to $500K or more. On top come implementation, commonly $150K to $350K for a mid-market site, and the customer-hosted front end, often $25K to $100K a year.

Contentful publishes a non-commercial Free plan and Lite at $300 a month. SSO, custom roles and EU data residency need quote-only enterprise contracts, and so do personalization, Studio and AI Actions. Independent analysis puts the enterprise average near $179,000 a year, with real cost 40% to 60% above list. API calls do not accrue overages on Premium and Enterprise, and builds are much shorter.

Over five years Contentful usually costs less to license and build. Before comparing, add the separate personalization, search, forms and email tools that SitecoreAI bundles and Contentful buyers usually license elsewhere.

**What to ask Sitecore:**

- Which metric drives each module's price, and how are visit overages reconciled at year end?
- What will front-end hosting and a certified implementation partner add to our first-year cost?
- Which retirements and action-required base image changes are planned for the next twelve months?

**What to ask Contentful:**

- Which of the features we need, such as SSO, EU residency and personalization, require Enterprise rather than Premium?
- How will Salesforce's ownership and the pending Braze deal affect our pricing and roadmap at renewal?
- What support response times apply on our plan, and what does Premium support add?

## Implementation & hosting

Both are vendor-run SaaS, and with both the customer builds and hosts the website. SitecoreAI authoring runs only as Sitecore-operated SaaS. The front end is usually a Next.js or Angular app, and since October 2026 Sitecore documents building one in any framework against its GraphQL APIs. Contentful runs fully managed on AWS with a small client SDK, but has no local emulator, so development always runs against the cloud.

Build effort differs sharply. SitecoreAI still means templates, renderings, datasources and SXA (Sitecore's site-building framework), which need scarce certified developers. A typical team adds a Sitecore architect and part-time DevOps for the base image. Contentful's concepts are few and generalist TypeScript developers are productive quickly. Its limits are real, though: content types cap at 50 fields, field-type changes need migration scripts, and preview and SEO need developer wiring.

Day to day, Contentful is lighter. Neither has upgrade projects, but SitecoreAI base images arrive every two weeks, some tagged action required for customized code, and Explorer and Package Designer were retired on short notice. Contentful also changes query behavior with about 30 days of notice, yet a single part-time developer usually covers platform operations.

## Marketing & personalization

This is where SitecoreAI earns its price. Page builder edits the live site with drag-and-drop components and previews by language, device, audience and future date. Design Studio now generates new components from a plain-language description. Personalization, A/B/n tests and multi-armed bandit allocation (traffic shifted automatically toward the winning variant) sit in the base license, and since October 2026 they reach mobile apps and third-party sites. Native forms, a campaign calendar and event-triggered emails round it out.

Contentful Personalization offers audience targeting, A/B and multivariate tests and bandit optimization inside the web app, and Studio provides visual page building. Both need enterprise plans, and new layouts need developer-registered components. There is no form builder, email sending or marketing automation, and sitemaps and redirects are built by the front-end team.

For multi-brand work, SitecoreAI site collections share component libraries, page designs and global datasources, with brand kits per site and Content Hub asset management bundled. Contentful runs each brand as a separate space with forked templates and no syndication of entries, so shared content gets duplicated or federated in custom code.

## AI capabilities

Both are among the stronger AI platforms we score, and they lean different ways. SitecoreAI's Agentic Studio has 20+ prebuilt agents, a no-code agent builder and multi-step flows, with review cards so a person approves every AI change. Its Marketer MCP server (Model Context Protocol, the standard AI assistants use to call tools) lets Claude, Copilot Studio or Cursor build pages and check references before deleting content. Brand kits ground AI writing per site, Sitecore holds ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management, and AI use is not billed per token.

Contentful is the more open choice. Its hosted MCP server reached general availability in July 2026 with OAuth and environment scoping. AI Actions can use the buyer's own model through OpenAI, AWS Bedrock (for Anthropic), Google Vertex or Azure OpenAI, and a custom endpoint also works. A Content Operations Agent is in public beta on all paid plans, and audit logs stream to your cloud storage within about five minutes.

SitecoreAI offers its own model only for Content Hub image tagging, so teams standardized on one AI provider will find Contentful easier to align. SitecoreAI's answer-engine tracking also needs a separate Scrunch subscription.

## Moving between them

SitecoreAI and Contentful come from different vendors and different traditions. SitecoreAI is the SaaS successor to Sitecore XP and XM, while Contentful has been API-first from the start and has belonged to Salesforce since September 1, 2026. Moving between them is a full replatform in either direction.

Going from SitecoreAI to Contentful means remodeling Sitecore templates as content types within the 50-field limit and rebuilding the front end's components. Personalization, site search, forms and multi-site sharing must be replaced with Contentful add-ons or other vendors. SitecoreAI's front-end SDKs are open source, but its backend exit path is weak. Going the other way means rebuilding content as Sitecore templates and hiring a certified partner, with implementations commonly at $150K to $350K.

Existing Sitecore XP or XM customers face a front-end rebuild either way, but SitecoreAI keeps their content models, workflows and editor habits. Teams that never used Sitecore's personalization or multi-site features should price Contentful before renewing. Large multi-brand marketing groups should be wary of leaving SitecoreAI.

## Biggest Differences

### Where SitecoreAI leads most

- **Forms & data capture** (75 vs 25 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): SitecoreAI Forms provides a visual builder with multi-page forms, conditional page routing and show/hide logic, submission webhooks with custom headers and analytics. Progressive profiling and lead routing are not native.
- **Search and discovery content** (76 vs 28 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): Discovery tooling took another step in October. Oct 13 Recommenders add a ready-made 'More like this' search experience component that shows related products, articles or topics on the page a visitor is viewing, without a search and without custom build, using the inclusion and ranking controls of a chosen Source. The October release also adds a real-time content push API so product, pricing and inventory changes reach search immediately. These sit on Content SDK 2.3 faceted and multi-locale search, Content SDK 2.4 typeahead with document previews and More Like This queries, July 10 site search sources and April 24 advanced ranking rules with boosts and demotions. Sitecore Search is bundled in SitecoreAI. Full content-product blending still depends on a commerce engine and Discover for catalog merchandising.
- **Recommendations** (58 vs 15 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): SitecoreAI search experiences now include Recommenders (Oct 13, 2026), a ready-made More like this component that surfaces content related to the page being viewed using the source's inclusion settings and ranking controls, alongside More Like This queries in Content SDK 2.4. It is content-similarity rather than a collaborative-filtering or behavioral recommendation engine, and only one recommender type is documented, so it stays just below 60.
- **Content syndication and sharing** (65 vs 22 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): SXA global datasources enable corporate-level content (press releases, legal disclaimers, product announcements) to be maintained centrally and consumed across brand sites with site-level override capability. Shared content libraries and global layout components allow push-based content distribution with controlled override points. The July 1 Content Transfer API and Item Transfer API give a complete programmatic workflow for moving content between environments (create/upload transfer packages, monitor progress, review history), and the Aug 18 base image 1.8.105 extends the Content Transfer API to transfer content from the Core database, widening what can be syndicated across tenants. July 10 migration-workflow documentation clarifies the supported cross-environment paths versus the legacy Package Designer. Not a push-notification syndication system, but controlled sharing with inheritance/override semantics plus API-driven cross-environment transfer.
- **Design system management** (74 vs 32 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): SXA provides a centrally maintained component library with brand-level overrides, so core components are maintained centrally and brands extend without forking. The Oct 8 Design Studio release turns this into managed design-system tooling: component models (fields, rules, data structures) are defined upfront and can be reused, cloned and inherited, presentations are generated from models and refined with design tokens, and availability is controlled per site, template and placeholder. April 22 added Inspect mode for exploring components and variants. Update propagation across brands still runs through SXA theme inheritance and deployment pipelines rather than a versioned design-system release workflow.

### Where Contentful leads most

- **Typical implementation timeline** (28 vs 72 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): Integrator-reported timelines put single-site Contentful builds at 4–8 weeks and complex multi-brand or heavily integrated programs at 10–16 weeks, competitive with peer headless platforms, and content model templates, bulk entry operations and the expanding marketplace keep cutting setup and migration effort. Third-party analysis is blunter that Contentful 'is not a plug-and-play CMS' and that first-year implementation overhead often exceeds the subscription for mid-market teams, which is the main thing keeping this in the low 70s rather than higher. Held unchanged — September's changes (GraphQL fragment-spread limit effective Oct 9, Array Reference default-ordering change, Feb 2027 Usage API and space-roles endpoint removals) are ongoing maintenance chores rather than initial-build drivers.
- **Bring your own AI model/key (BYOM/BYOK)** (46 vs 88 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): Contentful launched full BYOM support on Nov 16, 2025 and added Azure OpenAI as a fifth connector on May 19, 2026 — now covering all three hyperscaler LLM clouds plus custom endpoints. Up to 10 connectors per organization can be configured in the AI tab of org settings. Supported providers: OpenAI (GPT-5, GPT-4o), AWS Bedrock (Anthropic Claude), Google Vertex AI (Gemini 2.5 Flash), Azure OpenAI, and Custom endpoint (any OpenAI-compatible API including self-hosted OSS models). Credentials are provider-managed — Contentful does not store API keys. Connected models appear automatically in AI Actions dropdowns. Among the most comprehensive BYOM implementations in the headless CMS market.
- **Specialist cost premium** (28 vs 68 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): Modest premium. Core work uses mainstream JavaScript/TypeScript against documented REST and GraphQL APIs with first-party SDKs, a CLI and now a GA MCP server, so experienced React/Next.js developers are productive quickly and no proprietary language or toolchain is involved. Contentful-specific knowledge — CMA migration scripts, the App Framework, space and environment governance — commands a modest rate premium, and the certification program is optional rather than a gate on hiring; the largest hidden cost remains content-architecture expertise, since poor initial modeling drives expensive downstream refactoring.
- **Pricing transparency** (25 vs 60 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): The pricing page publishes real numbers for exactly one paid tier — Free $0 and Lite $300/month — while Enterprise is 'Custom' and the Premium plan is absent from the page entirely despite Contentful's own usage-limits doc confirming it exists (launched Feb 1, 2023) and governs where most mid-market deployments land. Personalization (Start/Core/Scale), Studio ('Custom price / year') and AI Actions are all 'Contact sales' with no published price, and the pricing FAQ answers 'How much do Contentful products cost?' with 'contact our sales team.' Marked down from prior because a whole production tier is missing from the public page and three of four products carry no price at all; held above 55 because included quotas and Lite overage rates are published in detail in the help center.
- **Free / Hobby Tier** (15 vs 48 for SitecoreAI vs Contentful): Correcting the prior entry's record limit: the free Starter Space holds 10,000 records, not ~25K, alongside 25 content types, 2 environments, 10 users, 2 roles, 2 locales, 100K API calls and 50 GB bandwidth per month with additional consumption explicitly not allowed — a permanent, hard-capped tier that is capable for prototyping but half as roomy as previously credited. The commercial restriction remains the dominant penalty and is stated twice: the usage limit says the Free plan 'may not be used to support commercial use cases' with suspension or termination as remedies, and the Free plan FAQ says it 'is not intended for commercial purposes.' Marked down for the record-limit correction; not lower because the tier is free forever with 10 users and real editorial features (live preview, tasks, comments) rather than a time-limited trial.

## Questions Buyers Ask

### Is SitecoreAI the same product as XM Cloud?

Yes. SitecoreAI is the new name for XM Cloud, Sitecore's SaaS digital experience platform, which now bundles the former CDP and Personalize products, site search and Agentic Studio in one license. It is not the self-hosted Sitecore XP or XM. Moving from those is a replatform with a front-end rebuild, which practitioners put at 9 to 14 months.

### Does Salesforce's acquisition of Contentful change anything for buyers?

Salesforce completed the acquisition on September 1, 2026. October reports found no layoffs or leadership changes, with APIs, pricing and contracts unchanged, and standalone funding risk is gone. The open questions are overlap with Salesforce's own Experience Cloud CMS, the pending Braze deal, and a Marketing Cloud integration that is announced but not shipped. Raise them at renewal.

### Is SitecoreAI or Contentful better for a mid-size team?

Contentful usually fits mid-size teams better. A team of two to three people can ship a marketing site, single-site builds take 4 to 8 weeks, and Lite costs $300 a month. SitecoreAI's quote-only annual contracts, partner-led builds and separate front-end hosting put its entry cost far higher, unless the team runs several brands and needs bundled personalization.

### Which suits a regulated industry, SitecoreAI or Contentful?

Both hold SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022 and offer a GDPR data processing agreement with EU data residency. SitecoreAI adds Asia-Pacific hosting, an in-country Singapore deployment and a 99.95% delivery uptime commitment. Contentful adds ISO 27018 and near real-time audit log streaming. Neither can be self-hosted, and SitecoreAI publishes no FedRAMP authorization or HIPAA business associate agreement template.

### Which is better, SitecoreAI or Contentful?

SitecoreAI scores higher on overall suite capability (73 vs 69). SitecoreAI wins 2 of the 10 scoring categories and Contentful wins 4, with 4 too close to call.

### Which costs less to own, SitecoreAI or Contentful?

Contentful scores higher on total cost of ownership (64 vs 40), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.

### Which is easier to implement and run, SitecoreAI or Contentful?

SitecoreAI and Contentful are level on build simplicity (64 vs 64), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. Contentful scores higher on operational ease (62 vs 54), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.

### Which is better for marketing teams, SitecoreAI or Contentful?

SitecoreAI scores higher on fit for marketing sites (78 vs 52), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.

### Which has stronger AI features, SitecoreAI or Contentful?

SitecoreAI and Contentful are level on AI enablement (78 vs 77), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
