## The short answer

Choose Liferay if your site is mostly for people who log in: employee intranets, customer and partner portals, B2B commerce, or regulated work that needs the vendor's own certifications. Choose WordPress if you run marketing, publishing or WooCommerce sites, want no license or contract, and will own hosting, security and plugins yourself. The decision turns on whether you need permissions, compliance paperwork and portal tooling from the platform, or would rather trade them for low cost, fast launches and the largest talent pool.

**Choose Liferay if:**

- You are building an employee intranet with knowledge base, social tools and Microsoft 365
- You run customer, partner or dealer portals with account hierarchies and gated content
- Procurement needs SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 or a vendor-signed Business Associate Agreement
- You sell B2B with account-specific pricing, quotes and governed deal rooms

**Choose WordPress if:**

- Organic search and fast content production drive your marketing or publishing site
- You want no license fee, no contract and a site live the same day
- You blend editorial content with a WooCommerce store on one authoring surface
- You need to hire freely from the largest developer and agency pool of any CMS

## The differences that matter

| Area | Liferay | WordPress |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Access and identity | Custom roles down to a single entry, with SAML, OpenID Connect, LDAP and automated provisioning from Okta or Entra ID built in. | Five core roles and capabilities, with single sign-on, membership and finer access added through plugins; no field-level permissions or automated provisioning. |
| Compliance | Holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 42001, with a default data processing agreement and 15 cloud regions. | The software carries no SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP or Business Associate Agreement; every certification must come from your host. |
| Pricing model | Quote only, scaled by server instances or logged-in users and page views; enterprise deals reportedly start around $25K to $50K a year. | Free and open source under the GPL with no contract; you pay for hosting from about $5 to $35 a month and premium plugins. |
| Intranet and portals | Knowledge Base, wikis, message boards, announcements and Microsoft 365, Google Drive and SAP connectors ship in the product. | No people directory, read receipts or onboarding journeys; BuddyBoss and knowledge-base plugins approximate pieces with substantial custom work. |
| Ecosystem and talent | About 815 marketplace apps, a small community and scarce Java specialists concentrated in Latin America, Spain and India. | Roughly 60,000 free plugins, the most requested CMS skill in job postings, and agencies at every price point. |
| Upgrades | Quarterly releases carry long breaking-change lists, a mandatory Java platform move (javax to Jakarta) and 2026 deprecations of core content tools. | Three releases a year on published dates, strong backward compatibility and security releases that auto-apply within hours. |

## Pricing & total cost

Liferay publishes no subscription prices. Self-hosted licenses are counted per server instance and environment, so development, staging, production and clustering all add cost. SaaS plans meter monthly active logged-in users and anonymous page views, and AI Hub adds prepaid token blocks that stop at zero balance. Unofficial reports put enterprise subscriptions at $25K to $50K a year. Contracts are annual or multi-year, with no monthly option. Multi-factor authentication and SAML need an enterprise key, not the free tier.

WordPress has no license at all. Hosting runs from about $5 to $35 a month for small sites, and $115 to $675 or more for business-grade managed plans. A professional build adds per-site plugin subscriptions such as ACF Pro at $49 a year, Yoast Premium at $99 and WPML at $99. Maintenance retainers commonly cost $50 to $500 a month.

Over several years the gap widens beyond the license. Liferay implementations cost $10K to more than $100K, US specialists average about $127K a year, and quarterly upgrades need budgeted engineering time. WordPress talent prices like general web development. Its hidden costs are security, plugin conflict testing and any certifications you must buy through a host.

**What to ask Liferay:**

- What will the subscription cost per server instance, or per logged-in user and page view, across all our environments?
- Which features we need, such as Analytics Cloud, Enterprise Search or the Content Marketing Platform, are licensed separately?
- How much engineering time do your customers spend on each quarterly upgrade and the Jakarta migration?

**What to ask WordPress:**

- Which host will provide the SOC 2 report, ISO 27001 certificate or Business Associate Agreement we need?
- Who owns plugin updates, staging tests and the web application firewall, and what does that retainer cost?
- Which premium plugins does the build depend on, and what do their per-site renewals add up to each year?

## Implementation & hosting

Liferay is a Java platform. Self-hosting needs a Java app server, a database and Elasticsearch, with production hosting around $500 to $2,000 or more a month. Liferay SaaS and PaaS run it for you with a managed CDN and a service level agreement. Projects run 4 to 8 weeks for a simple portal and 9 to 12 months or more for complex ones. A production team realistically needs three to five people, including Java and FreeMarker templating skills.

WordPress runs on any PHP and MySQL host and installs in minutes. A simple marketing site takes about 2 to 4 weeks, and a solo developer can ship one. Free local tools such as wp-env, WordPress Studio and WP-CLI keep the developer loop fast.

Day to day, the burdens differ. Liferay's quarterly releases break custom Java code, and 2026 put Web Content, Blogs and Documents and Media into maintenance mode, so upgrades are planned projects. WordPress core upgrades are one click. But there is no page cache, CDN, monitoring or vendor support in the box, and plugins install without a lockfile, so someone must test every update on staging.

## Marketing & personalization

Liferay gives marketers a visual Page Builder, per-segment page Experiences, A/B testing on content pages and a Content Marketing Platform with calendars and kanban boards, generally available since September 2026. The catch is licensing: since 2026.Q1, segments come from Analytics Cloud or the Liferay Data Platform, both sold separately. There is no Marketo, Mailchimp or Salesforce Marketing Cloud connector, no lead scoring and no video hosting.

WordPress wins on search and speed. Yoast SEO or Rank Math covers meta tags, sitemaps, structured data and redirects, and the block editor or builders like Elementor let marketers ship landing pages without a developer. Newsletters come from MailPoet or FluentCRM. Personalization and testing come only from plugins such as If-So and Nelio, which must be reconciled with full-page caching.

For multi-brand work, Liferay is stronger: shared asset libraries, Virtual Instances (separate tenants on one installation), Design Libraries that push style updates to every site, and per-site approval workflows. WordPress Multisite shares one codebase and can lock brand themes and blocks. Content stays siloed per site without a syndication plugin such as Distributor, and core has no localization model.

## AI capabilities

Liferay AI Hub became generally available in 2026.Q3. Agents are built in the Workflow Designer, with model-chosen branching and nodes that call other agents, and editors get drafting, translation, tagging and category suggestions. An official MCP (Model Context Protocol) server lets outside agents read and write content with the signed-in user's permissions. Governance is strong: brand instructions, mandatory policy instructions and input and output guardrails. The limits are cost and choice. Bring-your-own-key covers only OpenAI in the AI Creator writing tool, and AI Hub meters usage in prepaid Liferay Tokens.

WordPress 7.0 put the foundation in core: a Connectors vault for OpenAI, Anthropic and Google keys, the Abilities API, and an official MCP adapter that lets Claude, Cursor or VS Code draft and publish content. The AI Engine plugin can point at self-hosted models such as Ollama, so nothing leaves the building. Rank Math and Yoast generate SEO titles, descriptions and alt text. Core lacks an audit trail of AI use, brand enforcement and a usage dashboard; plugins fill those gaps.

## Moving between them

The two products are unrelated: different vendors, languages and generations. Liferay is a Java portal turned digital experience platform, and WordPress is a PHP CMS. A move in either direction is a rebuild, not an upgrade.

Leaving Liferay, content extracts as JSON through its headless APIs. Content models, permissions, workflows and the proprietary LAR export format do not carry over, and OSGi modules (Liferay's Java plugin format) and fragments must be rewritten. Portal features would be replaced with BuddyBoss, membership and knowledge-base plugins. Leaving WordPress is easier on the data side, thanks to a documented MySQL schema and the built-in WXR export, though Elementor or Divi shortcodes need cleanup. Moving onto Liferay means rebuilding the theme, roles and workflows, and hiring Java skills.

An organization with a working Liferay intranet or B2B portal rarely gains by moving to WordPress. A WordPress marketing site gains little from Liferay unless logged-in users, compliance paperwork or central governance become the main job.

## Biggest Differences

### Where Liferay leads most

- **ISO 27001 / ISO 27018** (80 vs 20 for Liferay vs WordPress): Liferay holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 (certificate ISMS-LS-5319) with scope covering development, operations, maintenance, and delivery of the DXP and Cloud Services Platform — platform scope, not just infrastructure. Also certified ISO/IEC 27017:2015 and ISO/IEC 27018:2019 for cloud PII processing, audited by A-LIGN. Meets the 80+ threshold for platform-scope ISO 27001 plus ISO 27018.
- **Additional certifications** (74 vs 15 for Liferay vs WordPress): Portfolio now adds ISO/IEC 42001 (AI Management System, certified Dec 2025 — among the first companies globally), a meaningful current attestation, on top of CSA STAR Level 1 (CAIQ) and Level 2, CSA Trusted Cloud Provider, Spain ENS, and ISO 27017. ATO FastTrack signals FIPS 140-3 readiness in progress for 2026. Still no PCI DSS, FedRAMP authorization, or Cyber Essentials Plus, which caps the score below 78.
- **SOC 2 Type II** (78 vs 20 for Liferay vs WordPress): Current SOC 2 Type 2 attestation, independently verified annually since 2019, covering Liferay PaaS, SaaS, Analytics Cloud, and Managed Services. Reports available to customers upon request, and the DPA allows a recent SOC report to substitute for customer audits. Not 85+ because the specific Trust Service Criteria covered beyond Security are still not publicly documented.
- **Employee experience** (83 vs 38 for Liferay vs WordPress): Employee portal capabilities remain Liferay's strongest use case: AI-driven personalized dashboards, notifications, social features (blogs, message boards, mentions), announcements, workflow-driven approvals, and mobile access. Out-of-the-box connectors for Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Salesforce, and SAP enhance the digital workplace experience. Customer deployments like Toll Global Express and Coach demonstrate frontline-inclusive intranet patterns. LDAP/AD directory integration is mature.
- **Workplace tool integration** (72 vs 28 for Liferay vs WordPress): Liferay provides out-of-the-box connectors for Microsoft 365 (including Teams integration), Google Drive, Salesforce, and SAP. Document co-editing via SharePoint/OneDrive integration is supported. Teams notifications and Slack webhooks are achievable. The integration depth provides a meaningful single-pane experience for employees, embedding Office documents and enterprise application content within the intranet. Bot-driven integrations require custom development.

### Where WordPress leads most

- **Pricing transparency** (35 vs 95 for Liferay vs WordPress): Self-hosted WordPress core is free and open-source under GPLv2+ with zero licensing fee and no sales gate whatsoever — the entire cost stack (hosting + premium plugins) is publicly published by third parties. Every real cost input can be priced from public pages before a buyer talks to anyone. Not 100 only because the true budget assembles from many separate published sources (host, plugins, labor) rather than one canonical price sheet.
- **Third-party content** (40 vs 95 for Liferay vs WordPress): WordPress third-party content is the deepest of any CMS, and the 7.0/7.1 releases generated a fresh wave of upgrade guides, feature breakdowns, and video coverage from raidboxes, DreamHost, SmartWP, Gutenberg Times, and dozens of hosts and educators within weeks. Countless Udemy/YouTube courses, books, and blogs cover every skill level. No plausible scenario where a self-hosted operator lacks learning material.
- **Talent availability** (43 vs 95 for Liferay vs WordPress): WordPress is the most abundant CMS talent pool in the market — the most-requested CMS skill in web-development job postings, with the largest freelancer availability across every hiring platform and price tier. Demand remains robust into 2026 for custom theme/plugin work, headless builds, and increasingly AI integration. Hiring risk is essentially nil.
- **Concept complexity** (34 vs 83 for Liferay vs WordPress): The WordPress mental model (posts, pages, taxonomies, custom post types, hooks/filters, themes, plugins) is the single most widely understood CMS paradigm in web development, and self-hosted core has no managed-platform layer (no VIP dashboard, environments, or mu-plugins conventions) to re-learn. WP 7.1 'Mary Lou' (Aug 19, 2026) adds an expanded Abilities API and a new Icons API — additive, approachable developer surfaces — while enforcing an iframed editor requiring Block API v3. Not higher because the hook/filter lifecycle, template hierarchy, and evolving Block API versions are still WordPress-specific abstractions rather than pure standard-web concepts.
- **Community size** (50 vs 95 for Liferay vs WordPress): WordPress has the largest community of any CMS by an order of magnitude — powering ~41.5% of all websites and ~59% of CMS-detected sites (2026, W3Techs), with the nearest rival near 5%. The wordpress.org plugin repository hosts 60,000+ free plugins (90,000+ including premium), and its Stack Overflow volume, @wordpress npm downloads, and WordCamp network are all unmatched; even the WordPress Foundation G2 listing alone carries 9,500+ reviews. The recent share dip is a momentum signal (4.3.2), not a community-size change.

## Questions Buyers Ask

### Does self-hosted WordPress inherit WordPress VIP's FedRAMP authorization?

No. WordPress VIP is a separate managed product, and its FedRAMP Moderate authorization belongs to it alone. Self-hosted WordPress carries no SOC 2, ISO 27001 or FedRAMP of its own. Hosts such as WP Engine, Kinsta and Pantheon hold SOC 2, and Liquid Web/Nexcess will sign a healthcare Business Associate Agreement, while WP Engine and Kinsta will not.

### Is the Liferay Free Tier enough to run a production site?

It gives the same core installation as enterprise, including workflow, headless APIs and clustering on up to three nodes. But activation keys must be renewed every 12 months, patches stop at each quarter's first release, and multi-factor authentication, SAML and advanced search tuning need an Enterprise Subscription. Most production portals will need the paid key.

### Which suits a healthcare or government organization, Liferay or WordPress?

Liferay is the safer fit. It offers a Business Associate Agreement for healthcare, holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001, and launched ATO FastTrack in September 2026 as a US government authorization path. WordPress can run in compliant environments, but only through a host that signs the paperwork and the operator's own security program.

### Can WordPress run a B2B customer portal like Liferay?

Partly. WooCommerce with B2BKing or Wholesale Suite adds customer-specific pricing, quote requests and gated wholesale catalogs, and membership plugins gate content. Liferay ships account hierarchies, account-specific catalogs and pricing, quotes and Digital Sales Room natively, with SAML and OpenID Connect federation built in. Complex account structures favor Liferay; simpler wholesale stores work on WordPress.

### Which is better, Liferay or WordPress?

Liferay scores higher on overall suite capability (62 vs 56). Liferay wins 5 of the 10 scoring categories and WordPress wins 4, with 1 too close to call.

### Which costs less to own, Liferay or WordPress?

WordPress scores higher on total cost of ownership (76 vs 45), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.

### Which is easier to implement and run, Liferay or WordPress?

WordPress scores higher on build simplicity (63 vs 45), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. WordPress scores higher on operational ease (54 vs 43), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.

### Which is better for marketing teams, Liferay or WordPress?

Liferay scores higher on fit for marketing sites (62 vs 54), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.

### Which has stronger AI features, Liferay or WordPress?

Liferay scores higher on AI enablement (57 vs 53), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
