## The short answer

Choose Adobe Experience Manager if you run many brand, country and language sites, need an enterprise asset manager, or already use Adobe's analytics and personalization tools. Choose Liferay if your users log in: intranets, customer and partner portals, and B2B commerce, where its permissions, social tools and native commerce lead. Liferay usually costs less to license and staff. Both are heavy Java platforms with quote-only pricing, so the choice depends on whether your priority is brand marketing at scale or authenticated experiences.

**Choose Liferay if:**

- You are building an intranet with a people directory, forums, knowledge base and Microsoft 365
- Your customers, partners or dealers log in to a portal with complex access rules
- You sell B2B with account pricing, quotes and catalogs, and want commerce in one platform
- You need tunable site search or self-hosting under strict data residency rules

**Choose Adobe AEM if:**

- You run dozens or hundreds of brand, country and language sites from central blueprints
- You already use Adobe Analytics, Adobe Target or Real-Time CDP
- Your brand depends on large asset libraries, video and rich product imagery
- You want fully managed hosting with a 99.99% uptime option

## The differences that matter

| Area | Liferay | Adobe Experience Manager |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Logged-in experiences | Social tools, a people directory, a knowledge base and Microsoft 365 connectors make intranets and portals a native use case. | No directory, social layer or workplace connectors, and the old Communities module did not carry over to Cloud Service. |
| Multi-site governance | Virtual Instances, shared asset libraries and Design Libraries push brand standards to many sites, without blueprint inheritance. | Multi Site Manager blueprints push content to every brand and country site, with component-level inheritance and local overrides. |
| Digital assets | Asset libraries with AI tagging and responsive renditions, but no rights management, URL image transforms or video hosting. | AEM Assets and Dynamic Media add rights expiry, smart cropping, adaptive video streaming and 360-degree spin sets, partly separately licensed. |
| Commerce | Liferay Commerce ships inside the platform with catalogs, account pricing, quotes, checkout and order management, aimed at B2B. | No cart or checkout of its own; transactional commerce comes from Adobe Commerce, a separately licensed product. |
| Site search | Elasticsearch or OpenSearch with facets, synonyms, pinned results and no-code relevance tuning through Search Blueprints. | A basic search component; facets, typo tolerance and search analytics need custom indexes or tools like Algolia or Coveo. |
| Pricing model | Quote only, scaled by server instances or, on SaaS, logged-in users and page views, with a Free Tier for evaluation. | Quote only, licensed by content requests counted even from cache, with personalization, analytics and AI agents sold separately. |

## Pricing & total cost

Neither vendor publishes prices. Liferay quotes by server instance and environment when self-hosted, and by monthly logged-in users and anonymous page views on SaaS. Unofficial reports put enterprise subscriptions at $25K to $50K a year. Adobe Experience Manager licenses Sites by content requests, counted even when a page is served from cache, plus environments, author seats and storage. Partner guides put entry near $30K a year and Sites, Assets and Forms bundles at $60K to $200K or more.

The license is the smaller part of the bill. Adobe's first-year implementation typically runs two to four times the license, and personalization, analytics, commerce and the AI agents are each separate licenses. Liferay implementations reportedly range from $10K to over $100K, but self-hosting adds a Java app server, database and Elasticsearch at roughly $500 to $2,000 or more a month, and quarterly upgrades take engineering time. Both need scarce Java specialists. Over five years Adobe typically reaches seven figures for an enterprise site. Liferay usually costs less, though its personalization and analytics are also extra products.

**What to ask Liferay:**

- Which features we need, such as SAML and multi-factor authentication, require an Enterprise Subscription rather than the Free Tier?
- Are Analytics Cloud, the Liferay Data Platform and AI Hub tokens in this quote, or priced separately?
- How much engineering effort should we budget each year for quarterly releases and their breaking changes?

**What to ask Adobe AEM:**

- How many content requests will our traffic generate, and what do we pay if we exceed the licensed volume?
- Which of Adobe Target, Adobe Analytics, Dynamic Media and the AI agents does this quote include?
- Can we negotiate true-down rights and an overage cap into a two or three year agreement?

## Implementation & hosting

Both are Java platforms that can be self-hosted or run in the vendor's cloud. Liferay Cloud offers a 99.95% production uptime SLA, while self-hosted stacks need an app server, database and Elasticsearch. Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service runs on Adobe-managed infrastructure with a Fastly CDN, Cloud Manager deployment pipelines and a 99.99% SLA option.

Build effort is high on both, and higher with Adobe. Basic AEM deployments take six to twelve months, need its proprietary Java stack (JCR, Sling, OSGi and HTL) and five or more specialized roles. Edge Delivery Services, Adobe's simpler document-based path, suits lean marketing sites but not most enterprise builds. Liferay projects run from four to eight weeks for a simple portal to a year or more for integration-heavy work, with three to five people. Client extensions let JavaScript developers do more, but core work still needs Java and FreeMarker.

Upgrades differ in kind. Cloud Service updates automatically and now supports canary deployments, but Adobe sets the migration calendar, including Java 25 by June 2027. Liferay ships a long list of breaking changes every quarter, plus a mandatory javax to Jakarta move.

## Marketing & personalization

Adobe Experience Manager gives marketers more. Universal Editor offers click-to-edit preview on traditional, headless and Edge Delivery sites, and Launches bundle many pages into a timed release. Targeting mode lets authors build per-segment variants, with Adobe Target adding machine learning decisioning under its own license. AEM Assets and Dynamic Media cover rights expiry, smart cropping and adaptive video. Multi Site Manager and Language Copy roll content out by brand and locale, with connectors to translation vendors such as Smartling and RWS.

Liferay's Page Builder offers drag-and-drop fragments and preview per segment, and Design Libraries (new in 2026.Q3) govern style books and fragments across sites. But since 2026.Q1, segments come from Analytics Cloud or the Liferay Data Platform, both licensed separately, and A/B testing has no multivariate option. Video is embed-only. The new Content Marketing Platform plans campaigns but does not automate them, and the core product has no Marketo or Mailchimp connector. Adobe has no native email or automation either, but Journey Optimizer and Marketo Engage connect to it as sibling products.

## AI capabilities

Adobe Experience Manager has the deeper AI stack. A single AEM MCP server (Model Context Protocol, a standard way for AI assistants to use tools) lets Claude, ChatGPT and others create pages, fragments and assets under the user's own permissions, and since 2026.9.0 it also runs Cloud Manager pipeline operations. Named agents for production, content optimization and governance are generally available through a separate Agentic license. The Governance Agent checks tone, claims, logos and imagery, and Content Credentials record AI provenance. Firefly image editing and Smart Tags are built in.

Liferay's AI Hub went generally available in 2026.Q3. Agents are built as ordinary Liferay workflows with LLM and AI decision nodes. Built-in agents draft content, fill fields, translate, suggest tags and generate images, and an official MCP server acts with the user's permissions over OAuth 2.0. Instructions carry brand voice, and Google Cloud Model Armor screens agent inputs and outputs. Gaps remain: SEO titles and alt text are written by hand, and there is no AI quality or brand compliance audit of published content. Usage is metered in prepaid token blocks that stop at zero.

## Moving between them

These are separate vendors with no shared lineage, so a move either way is a full replatform. Leaving Adobe Experience Manager is the harder exit. Content sits in a proprietary repository with no standard export, components use HTL and Sling, and migration specialists cite four to eight months. Asset metadata, renditions and smart crops do not transfer automatically. Leaving Liferay is moderately difficult: content extracts as JSON through headless APIs, but content models, permissions, workflows and its proprietary LAR export format do not carry over, and custom modules and fragments must be rebuilt.

Adobe's partner network is the largest in the market, including Accenture and Deloitte Digital. Liferay runs a certified partner program, but its talent is concentrated in Latin America, Spain and India. A move to Adobe suits marketing-led teams joining Adobe Experience Cloud. A move to Liferay suits organizations whose sites are mostly portals, intranets or B2B stores. Do not switch only to escape upgrade work: AEM 6.5 customers can take 6.5 LTS, and Liferay customers face a migration to the new Liferay CMS either way.

## Biggest Differences

### Where Liferay leads most

- **Free / Hobby Tier** (70 vs 15 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): The unified Free Tier gives everyone the same core DXP installation as enterprise: content management, sites, headless APIs, workflow, all supported databases, and clustering on up to three nodes. However, activation keys are valid only 12 months and must be renewed, keys are domain-registered, patch eligibility ends at each quarter's stable release, and MFA/SAML are excluded. A capable free tier, but the renewal requirement, key gating, and Java infrastructure footprint keep it below lightweight open-source alternatives.
- **Social and collaboration features** (68 vs 25 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): Liferay has a mature social layer for enterprise intranets: blogs, message boards, comments, reactions, mentions, forums, polls/surveys, idea submission (app), and community spaces (sites) per department or interest group. Peer recognition programs can be built on the platform. Legacy Blogs moved to maintenance mode in 2026.Q1 but remain fully supported, and the new Liferay CMS adds native blog-building on modern fragments and style book tokens. Social features are native and purpose-built for the intranet use case, not bolted-on widgets.
- **Workplace tool integration** (72 vs 32 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): Liferay provides out-of-the-box connectors for Microsoft 365 (including Teams integration), Google Drive, Salesforce, and SAP. Document co-editing via SharePoint/OneDrive integration is supported. Teams notifications and Slack webhooks are achievable. The integration depth provides a meaningful single-pane experience for employees, embedding Office documents and enterprise application content within the intranet. Bot-driven integrations require custom development.
- **Employee experience** (83 vs 48 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): Employee portal capabilities remain Liferay's strongest use case: AI-driven personalized dashboards, notifications, social features (blogs, message boards, mentions), announcements, workflow-driven approvals, and mobile access. Out-of-the-box connectors for Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Salesforce, and SAP enhance the digital workplace experience. Customer deployments like Toll Global Express and Coach demonstrate frontline-inclusive intranet patterns. LDAP/AD directory integration is mature.
- **People directory and org chart** (60 vs 28 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): Liferay has a native people directory integrated with the organization hierarchy and user profile system. Employee profiles can include skills, contact information, and organizational position. Organization hierarchy reflects reporting structures. HR system integration (Workday, BambooHR) is possible via API but no pre-built connectors exist. A visual org chart widget is available as a marketplace app but is not in the core platform.

### Where Adobe Experience Manager leads most

- **Video & rich media** (25 vs 73 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): Dynamic Media provides adaptive video encoding with HLS and MPEG-DASH, Video Smart Crops, multiple captions and audio tracks, AI-generated captions and a new 2026.9.0 viewer with playback analytics, plus 3D and interactive media viewers. Dynamic Media is a separately licensed AEM Assets capability, so it is capped as an add-on.
- **AI content auditing & quality** (35 vs 76 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): The Governance Agent validates tone, claims, logo, typography, and imagery in real-time and batch mode, AI-transforms brand documents into enforceable policy checks, and extends enforcement to external AI via the Experience Governance MCP server — GA via the Agentic SKU rather than Early Access. Sites Optimizer (GA) flags accessibility and content-quality issues and Content Credentials (C2PA) provide tamper-evident AI provenance, together covering quality + brand + accessibility. Score stops at 76 because thin/duplicate content detection remains undocumented.
- **Commerce platform synergy** (45 vs 85 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): CIF provides deep Adobe Commerce integration with GraphQL federation — product data available in author, cached at edge, real-time on publish. commercetools connector available. Adobe Commerce Optimizer adds a modern SaaS integration layer for catalog performance while allowing existing backend commerce systems to be retained. The core architecture of blending AEM content with commerce data remains the deepest in the market. Non-Adobe commerce integrations require more custom work.
- **Third-party content** (40 vs 78 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): Abundant content ecosystem: blogs, YouTube, conference recordings, LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, Pluralsight, with Experience League providing structured learning paths. Post-Summit 2026 agency analysis is plentiful (Bounteous on EDS/AI direction Jan 2026, Perficient Summit takeaways, Ranosys AEM guides, Adobe developer blog agentic series Feb-Mar 2026), and Cloud Service/EDS-specific content keeps growing as 6.x migrations accelerate. Legacy 6.x content dilution persists but is gradually diminishing.
- **Partner ecosystem** (55 vs 92 for Liferay vs Adobe Experience Manager): Largest partner ecosystem in DXP, significantly expanded at Adobe Summit 2026 with deepened tech partnerships (AWS, Anthropic, Google Cloud, IBM, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI) and agency/SI partners (dentsu, Havas, Omnicom, Publicis, Stagwell, WPP, Accenture, Capgemini, Deloitte Digital). The unified Digital Experience Partner Program launched March 1, 2026 merges Solution Partner and Technology Partner tracks.

## Questions Buyers Ask

### Is AEM 6.5 the same product as AEM as a Cloud Service?

They share a core but run differently. Cloud Service is Adobe-hosted and updates automatically. AEM 6.5 LTS is the self-managed line, with Service Pack 3 shipped in September 2026. Managed Services support for classic 6.5 ended in August 2026, and on-premises core support ends in February 2027, extended to February 2028. Some 6.5 modules, such as Communities, did not carry over to Cloud Service.

### Is there a free version of Liferay or Adobe Experience Manager to try?

Liferay's Free Tier runs the same core platform as enterprise, with clustering on up to three nodes, but keys must be renewed every 12 months and SAML and multi-factor authentication need a paid subscription. Adobe offers a self-serve Edge Delivery Services tutorial environment from aem.live, deleted after 30 days and not for commercial use. Classic AEM still goes through sales.

### Which suits a regulated industry, Liferay or Adobe Experience Manager?

Both answer most procurement checklists. Each holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018, and signs a business associate agreement for healthcare. Adobe adds FedRAMP Moderate, Australia's IRAP and sovereign hosting on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud through Managed Services. Liferay adds ISO 42001 for AI management, a US government authorization initiative and full self-hosting.

### Can a mid-size team run Liferay or Adobe Experience Manager?

Liferay is the more realistic choice for a mid-size organization with logged-in users: a production team of three to five people and a free entry point. Full Adobe Experience Manager builds usually need five or more specialized roles and six to twelve months. The exception is Edge Delivery Services, where two to three web developers can run a marketing site.

### Who implements Liferay and Adobe Experience Manager?

Adobe has the largest partner network among the platforms we score, with a unified partner program launched in March 2026 and global firms such as Accenture, Capgemini and Deloitte Digital. Liferay runs a searchable partner directory with regional tiers and developer certification. Its specialists are scarcer and concentrated in Latin America, Spain and India, so expect longer hiring outside those regions.

### Which is better, Liferay or Adobe Experience Manager?

Adobe Experience Manager scores higher on overall suite capability (76 vs 62). Liferay wins 2 of the 10 scoring categories and Adobe Experience Manager wins 7, with 1 too close to call.

### Which costs less to own, Liferay or Adobe Experience Manager?

Liferay scores higher on total cost of ownership (45 vs 25), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.
