## The short answer

Choose Contentstack if you want a governed headless CMS that can grow into personalization, A/B testing, first-party front-end hosting and AI agents running on the model you choose. Choose Kontent.ai if compliance, multilingual workflows and a lean, low-maintenance content platform matter more, especially in healthcare, where it signs a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement and Contentstack does not. The choice depends on whether you want experience features from your CMS vendor or prefer to buy them separately.

**Choose Kontent.ai if:**

- You store protected health information and need a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement
- Your security review asks for ISO/IEC 42001 AI certification or a WCAG 2.2 AA editor
- You publish in many languages and want per-language workflows, schedules and a translation agent
- You already use Uniform or Optimizely for personalization and want a lean CMS

**Choose Contentstack if:**

- You want personalization, A/B testing and a customer data platform from your CMS vendor
- You want to choose your AI model: OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock or Vertex AI
- Your team wants managed front-end hosting and click-to-edit visual editing from one vendor
- You want to start self-serve on a published $29 or $299 monthly tier

## The differences that matter

| Area | Kontent.ai | Contentstack |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Personalization | No native segments, decisioning or A/B testing; Uniform, Conscia or Optimizely supply them, with no audience preview in the editor. | Personalize adds audience variants and A/B tests with automatic traffic routing, and the Lytics data platform supplies profiles, both licensed separately. |
| Front-end hosting | Neither renders nor hosts the site; teams deploy their own front end to partners such as Netlify. | Launch hosts the front end with Git deploys, custom domains, automatic SSL and edge functions, included from the Free tier. |
| Compliance | SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018, CSA STAR, ISO/IEC 42001 and a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement. | SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022; its US data addendum prohibits health and card data, so no HIPAA agreement. |
| AI model choice | Agents run on a model Kontent.ai selects, with no bring-your-own-key option; an official Model Context Protocol server covers content and models. | Agent OS runs on OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock or Vertex AI, and its Model Context Protocol server exposes roughly 200 tools. |
| Pricing model | Quote only above a free Developer plan limited to one user, two languages and non-commercial use. | Free, Build at $29 and Growth at $299 a month are published; Enterprise, add-ons and overages are quote only. |
| Ecosystem | A curated directory of about 28 vetted integrations and a small community, so plan to train generalist developers. | A marketplace of about 71 installable apps plus Lytics data connectors, backed by a larger partner network. |

## Pricing & total cost

Kontent.ai publishes no paid price. Its pricing page is a calculator that ends in a sales quote, and third-party listings range from a few hundred dollars to over $2,499 a month. Cost scales on seats, content types and content items. Languages, environments and API calls also count, under a Fair Use Policy that can throttle sustained overage. Custom roles, audit logs and SSO sit on the Scale and Enterprise plans.

Contentstack published tiers in September 2026: Free, Build at $29 a month and Growth at $299 a month, with extra users at $25 each. Growth includes two custom roles and no SSO, and Enterprise is quote only. Personalize, the Lytics data platform, the Assets DAM (digital asset management) and extra Launch projects are priced separately, and overage rates are not published.

Both are fully managed, with no upgrade projects, so multi-year cost turns on staffing and add-ons. Contentstack's first-year implementation typically adds $20K to $100K or more. Kontent.ai buyers who need personalization pay for a second product such as Uniform, and they pay a separate front-end host, which Contentstack includes.

**What to ask Kontent.ai:**

- Which plan includes custom roles, SSO, audit logs and multiple environments, and at what price?
- How does the Fair Use Policy treat sustained API or content-item overage, and when would throttling start?
- Can your AI agents run through our own model provider, and is AI usage priced separately?

**What to ask Contentstack:**

- What do Personalize, Data & Insights and Assets cost on top of the CMS license?
- What are the overage rates for API calls and bandwidth at our expected traffic?
- What does the 99.95 or 99.99 percent availability package cost, and what recovery objectives come with it?

## Implementation & hosting

Both are cloud-only SaaS with no self-hosted option, and neither asks you to patch or upgrade anything. Kontent.ai runs on Microsoft Azure and can pin data to the EU, US, Canada or Australia. Contentstack offers seven isolated regions across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. Your team builds and runs the front end either way.

Kontent.ai is lighter to configure: two or three environment variables and a single SDK constructor. Its Next.js sample app wires up preview, Web Spotlight and draft mode, but official Nuxt or Astro starters were not found. Contentstack needs four token types for a full setup. Its cm:bootstrap command creates a stack and imports content in one step, Kickstarts cover Next.js, Nuxt and Astro, and Launch gives a hosted site on day one.

Watch the operational fine print. Contentstack changed its limit query parameter in September 2026 with no deprecation window, and documents no recovery objectives. Kontent.ai reaches 99.99 percent on the Delivery API under Enterprise agreements and publishes subscribable breaking-change notices. Its talent pool is thinner, so plan to train generalist developers.

## Marketing & personalization

Editors are well served on both. Each has live preview, configurable workflows and strong localization. Kontent.ai's Web Spotlight gives marketers a page tree and in-context editing in a structured block editor, with true drag-and-drop through Builder.io. Contentstack's Visual Editor adds click-to-edit and drag-and-drop of developer-built components, and Studio adds templates, though Studio is React-only.

The real gap is personalization and testing. Contentstack Personalize delivers audience variants, segmented experiences and A/B tests with automatic winner selection, and preview works per variant. Kontent.ai has none of this natively and relies on Uniform Canvas or Conscia. Neither has forms, email or marketing automation built in; both lean on marketplace apps, HubSpot embeds or Zapier.

For multi-brand work, Kontent.ai's Collections share or isolate content per brand inside one project with per-collection roles, as Integria does across six brands. Contentstack gives each brand its own stack, so sharing entries takes scripts or the Interstack Reference app. In return, Brand Kit enforces voice across stacks, the paid Assets add-on shares one media library, and up to five identity providers can sign into one organization.

## AI capabilities

Both vendors ship agents behind approval and audit controls. Kontent.ai's Expert Agents, launched March 31, 2026, cover SEO and answer-engine visibility, translation, compliance audits and content cleanup. Customers can configure unlimited custom agents in plain language. Hostelworld produced 134 pieces in two languages in one day. Kontent.ai was also the first CMS certified under ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management.

Contentstack's Agent OS, generally available since June 2026, is broader. Polaris writes fields after confirmation, Agent Builder and Automations handle multi-step work, and Skills push required instructions to every user. Each run logs the model, tokens and steps, and AI Credits tracks consumption. The contract bars training on customer data. Knowledge Vault adds a vector store so models can draw on your own documents.

Openness often decides it. Contentstack lets customers choose OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. Kontent.ai runs its AI on a model it selects, with no bring-your-own-key option. Both publish official MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers so tools such as Claude or Cursor can operate the CMS. Kontent.ai keeps an edge in AI translation, with a dedicated feature and agent.

## Moving between them

Kontent.ai and Contentstack come from separate vendors, and neither succeeds the other. Both are headless, so a move rebuilds the content model and rewires the front end's data layer rather than the site design. Kontent.ai's data-ops CLI exports models and content, and Contentstack's migration scripts create content types and entries. Expect to map linked items, components and language variants by hand.

Moving to Contentstack makes sense when personalization, hosting or AI model choice joins the roadmap. Multi-brand estates built on Kontent.ai Collections must decide how to split into stacks, and custom elements become Marketplace apps. Moving to Kontent.ai makes sense when HIPAA data, ISO/IEC 42001 or a simpler concept model matters more than experience features.

Some teams should stay put. Healthcare organizations storing protected health information should not move to Contentstack, whose US data addendum prohibits it. Teams relying on Personalize, Launch or Polaris agents should not move to Kontent.ai without budgeting replacements such as Uniform and a front-end host like Netlify.

## Biggest Differences

### Where Kontent.ai leads most

- **HIPAA & healthcare compliance** (70 vs 25 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): Kontent.ai now publishes a dedicated healthcare industry page and a 'Kontent.ai provides HIPAA compliance for customers' resource stating that PHI-handling operates under a Business Associate Agreement, backed by HIPAA-oriented RBAC guidance and Azure HIPAA-eligible infrastructure — a clear step up from the prior no-BAA posture. Score reaches 70 because a BAA and documented healthcare use are now explicit, but is held there because the BAA is arranged via customer representative rather than published as a standard all-tier self-serve offering.
- **Additional certifications** (73 vs 55 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): Kontent.ai's additional-cert portfolio is notably strong: it is the first CMS worldwide to achieve ISO/IEC 42001 (AI management system, full-platform scope, independently audited), alongside ISO 27017, CSA STAR, the CISA Secure-by-Design pledge, and EU AI Pact participation. This sets a new bar for AI governance among CMS vendors. Score is held below 78 because there is still no independent PCI DSS Level 1, FedRAMP, or C5 attestation.
- **Vendor-forced migrations** (68 vs 52 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): Delivery and Management API versioning is stable (Management API v2 current with a documented product changelog; 2026 additions like global draft versions shipped additively rather than via breaking changes) and Kontent.ai publishes a subscribable breaking-changes notification system with no recent disruptive forced migrations surfaced in research. The Kentico Kontent → Kontent.ai rebrand required minor URL/package name updates but was handled with backward compatibility. Held just below the 70+ band for 'rare forced migrations with 12+ month windows' to acknowledge the rebrand-era touchpoints.
- **Content operations burden** (72 vs 56 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): The Mar 31, 2026 'Expert Agents' evolution of Kontent.ai's Agentic CMS added purpose-built hygiene agents—Content Audit & Cleanup (stale content, review-date flagging, archival workflows, broken references), Pre-launch Validation, and Compliance Standards—that run continuously within existing governance controls, with ~60 organizations reported active and no autonomous publishing (human sign-off required). This places Kontent.ai well above the rubric's 60-floor for automated content hygiene—a genuine differentiator vs headless peers that lack automated audit/cleanup. Held below 75 because the agents remain relatively new and real-world reliability across diverse content models is still being validated.
- **SLA and uptime** (80 vs 66 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): Baseline 99.5% SLA for paid plans with enterprise SLAs reaching 99.99% on Delivery and 99.9% on Management; public status page at status.kontent.ai tracking 23 components with incident history and subscription notifications. Terms of service define Service Availability around the Content Delivery API; recent acknowledged incidents were resolved quickly and historical uptime is strong.

### Where Contentstack leads most

- **Bring your own AI model/key (BYOM/BYOK)** (20 vs 84 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): LLM choice is an explicit architectural pillar of Agent OS rather than a per-app setting: the platform markets 'brand governance and LLM choice' as core to its enterprise architecture, Agent Builder takes a customer-supplied model as a primary input, and every Agent OS execution log records which AI model ran the task — so model selection is both configurable and observable. BYOK in AI Assistant with Brand Kit continues to span OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, and Google Vertex AI (which transitively covers Anthropic, Meta, Cohere, and Stability), with Contentstack-managed keys as the default, and the AI Addendum contractually binds any 'AI Provider' against training on customer data. Not higher because self-hosted or custom fine-tuned model endpoints are still not documented as a supported configuration, and per-region AI data residency controls are not spelled out.
- **AI-powered personalization** (28 vs 80 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): Lytics now operates as the native Data Cloud inside AXP with real-time identity resolution and behavioral scoring, and its ML models score every profile for churn and conversion likelihood, build predictive audiences ('users likely to convert', 'users at risk of churn'), and generate lookalikes to target anonymous visitors — a genuine cold-start mechanism, not rule inference. Content classification aligns pieces to customer interests and predicts what will resonate, feeding next-best-content recommendations, while Contentstack Personalize (GA) executes A/B/n and segment-based variants at the edge with Brand Kit keeping variants on-brand; Contentstack publishes a joint reference architecture for zero-latency adaptive experiences. Not higher because personalization-performance analytics remain split between Lytics and Personalize rather than a single closed-loop dashboard, and experiment-to-model feedback is not documented as automatic.
- **Managed site delivery & front-end hosting** (30 vs 78 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): Contentstack Launch is a first-party front-end hosting product with Git and CLI deploys, per-environment URLs, custom domains with automatic SSL, apex redirection, cloud and edge functions and cache revalidation. Contentstack does not render pages itself and no site-level SLA was found, which keeps it in the 75–89 band.
- **Audience segmentation & customer data** (25 vs 70 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): Contentstack Data & Insights (the Lytics real-time CDP) supplies unified first-party profiles, behavioral segments and audience insights that flow into Personalize audiences, with Edge API custom attributes for real-time evaluation. It is a separately licensed product in the suite, so the add-on ceiling applies.
- **A/B testing and experimentation** (28 vs 72 for Kontent.ai vs Contentstack): Multi-Armed Bandit redistributes traffic to high-performing variants every minute based on impression and conversion events (100 impressions or 30 conversions threshold, 1% exploratory traffic floor), positioned by Contentstack as ending the 'regret cost' of fixed 50/50 splits. Primary and secondary metric tracking with auto-winner selection. Clearwinner Marketplace App automates post-test cleanup of finished A/B experiences. Flows adds A/B/n testing inside journey orchestration with version control and goal tracking. Native testing with statistical traffic optimization, auto-winner and lifecycle automation keeps this at 72; no further experimentation changes landed June–September 2026.

## Questions Buyers Ask

### Can Contentstack store protected health information like Kontent.ai?

No. Contentstack's US data processing addendum lists protected health information and payment card data as prohibited data, and it offers no HIPAA Business Associate Agreement or PCI DSS attestation. Kontent.ai publishes HIPAA guidance and signs a Business Associate Agreement on HIPAA-eligible Azure infrastructure. Healthcare buyers storing patient data should shortlist Kontent.ai.

### Do Kontent.ai or Contentstack have a free plan for a live commercial site?

Contentstack does. Its Free tier, launched September 16, 2026, includes one production stack, three users, 100K API calls, the Visual Editor and Launch hosting with no expiry. Kontent.ai's free Developer plan allows one user, two languages and non-commercial use only, so it suits evaluation rather than a live site.

### Which suits a mid-size team running several brand or regional sites?

Kontent.ai fits well when brands share one content model: Collections share or isolate content in one project with per-collection roles, and Spaces give each site its own domain and preview. Contentstack places each brand in its own stack, which isolates cleanly but makes sharing entries a scripting job. Contentstack does offer a published starting price on its Growth tier.

### What uptime guarantees do Kontent.ai and Contentstack offer?

Kontent.ai guarantees 99.5 percent on paid plans, and Enterprise agreements reach 99.99 percent on the Delivery API. Contentstack's 99.5 percent SLA is Enterprise-only, with 99.95 and 99.99 percent sold as separate packages. Contentstack publishes no uptime history or recovery objectives, and its regions do not fail over to each other.

### Which is better, Kontent.ai or Contentstack?

Contentstack scores higher on overall suite capability (69 vs 60). Kontent.ai wins 2 of the 10 scoring categories and Contentstack wins 8.

### Which costs less to own, Kontent.ai or Contentstack?

Contentstack scores higher on total cost of ownership (68 vs 66), which weighs licensing, implementation cost and running cost; a higher score means lower cost for what you get. Confirm current pricing with each vendor.

### Which is easier to implement and run, Kontent.ai or Contentstack?

Contentstack scores higher on build simplicity (71 vs 68), which covers the learning curve, implementation complexity and how easy it is to hire for. Kontent.ai scores higher on operational ease (70 vs 68), which covers upgrades, day to day overhead and vendor support.

### Which is better for marketing teams, Kontent.ai or Contentstack?

Contentstack scores higher on fit for marketing sites (62 vs 43), which looks at how well each platform serves campaign pages, landing pages and editor self-service.

### Which has stronger AI features, Kontent.ai or Contentstack?

Contentstack scores higher on AI enablement (77 vs 63), which covers AI content creation, workflow automation, AI search and personalization, and how open the platform is to your own AI tools.
